Scott Adkins Crowned King In Renny Harlin's HERCULES 3D

Posted: 24 May 2013 07:00 PM PDT

Scott Adkins, who made an insanely brutal impression in Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, has now been crowned king by director Renny Harlin. Adkins has been cast in the role of King Amphitryon in Harlin's Hercules 3D, which is now shooting in Bulgaria, which is where Hercules lives nowadays. As to the plot of this particular version of the legend, fansite Scott Adkins Fanz reports ... Myths are that During Amphitryon's absence, Alcmene (Hercule's mother) became pregnant by Zeus, who disguised himself as Amphitryon, when he visited her; she then became pregnant again by her real husband upon his return. Of these unions were born twin boys, of whom Iphicles was the son of Amphitryon, Hercules the son of Zeus. Kellan Lutz stars as Hercules;...

Electrifying First Trailer For Dark Bengali Film MEGHE DHAKA TARA

Posted: 24 May 2013 05:00 PM PDT

In 1960, Bengali director Ritwik Ghatak rocked the international film scene with his stark melodrama, Meghe Dhaka Tara (The Cloud-Capped Star). That film, along with the works of Satyajit Ray, put Calcutta on the art-film map, and continues to resonate with film audiences worldwide 50 years later. Such is that resonance that a new film with the same title approaches the earlier one with a biographical slant, looking into not only its making, but also the circumstances surrounding its production and the state of Ritwik Ghatak as a human being tormented by his own demons. The new film stars Saswata Chatterjee (breakout star of Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani as the assassin Bob Biswas) as Ghatak, and his performance even in these few minutes of footage is...

Cannes 2013 Review: JODOROWSKY'S DUNE Delightfully Journeys Into The Brilliance That Might Have Been

Posted: 24 May 2013 04:10 PM PDT

What's the most important film never made? Is it Kubrick's Napoleon? How about Gilliam's take on Don Quijote? In his excellent sophomore feature documentary of the same name, director Frank Pavich would have you believe the answer is Jodorowsky's Dune. And let me tell you this ... the man makes a hell of a case. The film follows a relatively straightforward format of archival clips and interviews with many of the filmmakers involved in the film-that-never-was, all of whom seem quite excited to recount their memories of the process. This goes double for Jodorowsky himself, who makes up about half the interview time. A completely likeable character, Jodorowsky is lively and exuberant while telling his stories. Jodorowsky's entire filmography leading up to Dune is...

CINEMA HOLOCAUST ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA, PART 3: THE NEW KING OF HORROR

Posted: 24 May 2013 12:00 PM PDT

MIKE'S JOURNAL, MAY 20: AFTERNOONThere's a lot of talk going around about a zombie outbreak happening here at the French Riviera.  It's pathetic really; just how badly every nerd and hipster in the world is so desperate to face an apocalypse brought on by the undead. It seems that whenever tragedy strikes today, whenever there's any type of viral or bacterial outbreak, the alarmists immediately jump to zombies. Oh, just how cynical have we really become? And just what is the cause to this zombie virus that people are theorizing about? Dog shit. That's right. You've got the fine journalists over at the ever reputable Huffington Post claiming that the French Riviera's dog shit problem has lead to a rash of extreme public suicides. How?Well,...

Cannes 2013: Ominous First Clip From ALL IS LOST With Robert Redford

Posted: 24 May 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Robert Redford has been showered with praise for his performance in J.C. Chandor's All is Lost, described as a survivalist tale about one man's battle against the elements. No dialogue is spoken, but it's far from a silent movie. Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, an unnamed man wakes to find his 39-foot yacht taking on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. Despite his success in patching the breached hull, his mariner's intuition and a strength that belies his age, the man barely survives the tempest. Using only a sextant and nautical maps to chart his...
