THE WORLD'S END World Premiere In Photos

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 08:30 PM PDT

Edgar Wright's third go-around with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, The World's End, had its official World Premiere in London's Empire Leicester Square cinema tonight and I had the good fortune to be among a small group of online journalists invited out to cover it. The lot of us landed at Heathrow yesterday morning and were taken out to the actual World's End pub in Camden by Wright himself before hitting the actual premiere today. And though we've been asked to hold our reviews until closer to the US release - Hint: I agree with the positive reviews already out there in other sources - I did manage to secure a spot in the photographer's bay of the red carpet (which was actually blue) and...

Samurai Cinema At Mexico's Cinematheque

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Another interesting film season is about to begin at Mexico's Cinematheque (Cineteca Nacional). Asian cinema has had a great presence there this year, with a past season dedicated to Korean movies, and now one to samurai cinema. Under the title of "Honor, acero y sangre: cine samurái" ("Honor, steel and blood: samurai cinema"), the Cinematheque will be showing 13 samurai films from July 16 to 28. "In the commemoration of the 400 years of the Hasekura mission, [led] by the samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga with the purpose of trading with the then New Spain, Mexico's Cinematheque, with the support of the Japan Foundation in Mexico, celebrates this occurrence that marked the beginning of the relations between both countries with a selection of films that reflect the...

Takahata's New KAGUYA-HIME NO MONOGATARI Gets A Teaser!

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 03:31 PM PDT

Okaerinasai! That's Japanese for something like "Welcome back!" It took Studio Ghibli's other master animation director Takahata Isao (Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday) a bloody damn while, but after years of absence he is finally returning to the scene. Let me rephrase myself. Paku-san (the nickname Miyazaki gave him) surely hadn't been sitting still, but at least he wasn't busy directing animation. His last work was a short made for the artist collab Winter Days in 2003, and his last full-length feature, My Neighbors The Yamada's, goes way back to 1999. In the meantime, his grey-bearded friend and colleague Miyazaki Hayao directed three full length features and has a new film called Kaze Tachinu to be released this month. Respectfully taking into account that...

Neuchatel 2013 Review: IN THE NAME OF THE SON Has The Church In Its Crosshairs

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Evoking the gospels both sacred and profane (Father Tarantino, hallowed be thy name), Vincent Lannoo's In the Name of the Son (Au nom du fils) is divided into six 'books'. It is only fitting for a film that veers wildly between farce and tragedy, but also between engaging thriller and limp noodle. It's a savage and incendiary take down of the Catholic Church that is, somewhat improbably, soft as a whisper -- a valentine to forgiveness and spirituality. As a follow up to his deadpan mockumentary Vampires, I don't think anybody could have seen this one coming. The film opens with a YouTube prologue, where two burly and buffoonish priests make a series of increasingly ridiculous requests of their parish -- Money? Time? 500 pounds of...

First Bloody, Red-Band OLDBOY Trailer Picks Up The Hammer

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 02:05 PM PDT

Its very existence has already made Spike Lee's Oldboy arguably the most divisive movie of the year. Will the first trailer change anyone's mind? Note that this trailer is the red-band version (i.e., Not Safe For Work) ... and it earns that distinction the old-fashioned way, with bloody imagery, profanities, glimpses of naked bodies, and so forth. Granted, I've only seen Park Chan-wook's version once (during its initial U.S. run) years ago, so I can't speak to any direct comparisons there, but I can say that the first official poster makes complete sense once you've seen the trailer, which is a sizzling tease for a potentially punishing ride. It looks crisp and cold and absolutely brutal. And, yes, the hammer is back, but other sharp-edged...

New Documentary About Studio Ghibli Coming To Japan This Fall

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 01:30 PM PDT

This year will not only see the release of two new films from Studio Ghibli, but also a documentary about the famous animation studio co-founded by producer Suzuki Toshio and directors Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao. Titled Yume to Kyōki no Ōkoku (The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness), the documentary is currently being filmed and will be released in Japan this fall. Directed by Sunada Mami (Ending Note: Death of a Japanese Salaryman), it will focus on the three studio co-founders as they work on Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) and Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (The Tale of Princess Kaguya). The director has received praise from the studio's staff for being 'invisible' as she manages to film them without interrupting their work. Regarding the use of the word...

Hey, What's THE MOTIVATION? "Don't Be A P----"

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 01:00 PM PDT

"Step 1: Don't be a pussy." So begins the teaser for The Motivation, a documentary about a skateboarding championship that promises something more than a standard-issue competition picture, especially since it's coming from filmmaker Adam Bhala Lough (Bomb the System, The Carter). Eight of the world's best pro-skateboarders prepare for the upcoming Street League Championship in NYC. Each equally talented, they all must overcome unique challenges--family pressures, injuries, money, fame and their own internal struggles--for a chance to win $200,000 and the title of best street-skateboarder in the world. The teaser makes a good case for the film. It's heading for a limited theatrical release on July 30, ahead of its August 6th availability on iTunes and On Demand....

New Images From Spike Lee's OLDBOY!

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 12:30 PM PDT

By now, you would have seen the official poster for Spike Lee's adaptation of the Oldboy manga, made famous by Park Chan-wook's classic film of the same name and based on the same source material. Whether you are impressed by the poster or not, you are probably curious to find out how Spike Lee's version will turn out. OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. Co-starring Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley,...

NYAFF 2013 Review: JUVENILE OFFENDER, A Deeply Humanistic and Beautifully Acted Character Study

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Juvenile Offender, Kang Yi-kwan's delicately observed, tightly written, deeply humanistic small-scale drama is one of the must-see films of this year's New York Asian Film Festival. Bracingly tough-minded, this film deftly avoids the traps inherent in its narrative material, especially in a Korean cinema context, of devolving into overwrought melodrama. It does so by concentrating on its characters, and the complex interactions between them, and not forcing it into the mold of a contrived plot. The indelible impression left by this narrative strategy is bolstered by great performances all around, by both its lead actors and others in smaller roles, creating an environment that feels truly realistic.Juvenile Offender begins by introducing us to Ji-gu (Seo Young-ju), a 16-year old who lives with his ailing, diabetic...

Review: SECRETLY GREATLY, Slick, Manipulative, And Disappointing

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 10:01 AM PDT

When a filmmaker makes a great debut, expectations are bound to be quite high for the follow-up. Such was the case for Jang Cheol-soo, who took the world by storm with his terrific island revenge saga Bedevilled in 2010. When word first surfaced of his next feature, which would see him adapt the popular webcomic Secretly Greatly, the initial buzz was one of excitement. However, as it progressed through casting and then production, it became more and more clear that this would be a completely different kind of film, and certainly not one aimed at the audience that was so enthralled by his debut. Starring a trio of fresh-faced and supremely popular TV stars, Secretly Greatly is a resolutely commercial film that seeks to placate...

Destroy All Monsters: THE LONE RANGER and (Despicable) Me

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Hollywood loves a bomb almost as much as it loves a hit, and no bomb has been pre-approved for consensual bombhood like The Lone Ranger since last year's John Carter (formerly Of Mars). Scraping a measly $49M off a very long weekend and falling ignominiously also-ran to no less welterweight a competitor than Despicable Me Too, Gore Verbinski's revisionist/revival Western will, barring any sleeper bombs yet to be revealed, likely be recorded as the defining financial misfire of Hollywood's 2013. Before long, we're all going to wish The Lone Ranger was a much better movie, because despite its blazing lack of popular appeal, it's still the most interesting thing to come out of Hollywood's moribund summer, and conversations about interesting things are easier when they...
