Review: COMMUNITY S5EP04, "Cooperative Polygraphy", A Fitting Farewell To Pierce Sans Pierce

At the end of last week's episode the ol' study group found out former member Pierce Hawthorne had passed away. It came after a moody, Zodiac style procedural, and I thus wrote: " While the reveal of Pierce's death at the end certainly cemented the gloomy mood, I'm not sure if an homage episode so reliant on plotting and such a distinct spectacle was truly the right place for the news. Let's then hope there will be a little more to this thread in future eps."Heh. It's fun to quote oneself. So color me impressed, because this week's episode confronts Pierce's death, his life and what he truly meant to the study group in particularly impressive fashion. Truth be told I didn't laugh out loud...

Review: JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT Starts Strong Before Becoming A Preposterous Mess

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 08:00 PM PST

There's something to be said for the throwback spy genre flick. Throw in a bit of black-ops mischief, some clever subterfuge, and a bunch of nifty maneuvering and you occasionally get quite a fun cinematic experience. Naturally, the collapse of the Iron Curtain made some of these tales a bit harder to tell. Films have looked for slightly more swarthy villainy, as the focus shifted towards other parts of the world. Still, there's something downright cathartic about a good old fashioned tale of the West versus the Ruskies. Placed in a period setting, this dance with us-vs-them can be extraordinarily effective. Take Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, that beautifully languid film that captured the mundane mendacity of spycraft. It captured both the paranoia of that period...

Pissing In The Punch Bowl At The 2014 Sundance Film Festival, Part 1: Spies, Bloggers, And Dead Comedians

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST

INTRODUCTION: MY NAME IS UZI SILVERSTEIN BECAUSE I FUCK MOTHER FUCKERS UP LIKE A SUB MACHINE GUN.If there's one thing that the Israeli Defense force teaches you, it's to always have a plan. Not only should you have a plan, but you should have a backup plan. And just in case, you should have a backup plan to that backup plan. And that is what you're reading right now. This is my back up plan to my back up plan. But I wonder if it's appropriate for me to write in the present tense. I might be dead already as you read this. So am I supposed to speak in the past tense when there's such uncertainty right now? Maybe I should say that this...

New Trailer & Image for Hammer's Second Feature THE QUIET ONES

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST

The British more or less invented images of gothic horror, haunted buildings and creepy possessed children. Add in some American-style found footage and a retro setting, and you've got the revamped Hammer Films' second feature, The Quiet Ones. Directed by John Pogue (screenwriter of US Marshalls and The Skulls and director of Quarantine 2) and starring Jared Harris, Sam Clafin and Olivia Cooke, the new trailer shows many of the usual horror film tropes: a young girl with connections to the supernatural, the father figure who initiates investigation, a group of skeptics and some pretty effective editing that should made you jump a few times. The film is set for release on April 11th in the UK and April 24th in the US.Inspired by true...

Review: LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON Affectingly Debates Nature Vs. Nurture

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST

It seems Kore-eda Hirokazu is incapable of making bad movies. The babies-switched-at-birth premise in films is nothing new. But he just makes it so darn affecting and poignant, avoiding all the clichés that go with this kind of blurry-eyed family drama. His ability to get unbelievable performances out of his child actors is already legendary, ever since then 12-year-old Yagira Yuya won the Best Actor Award at Cannes in 2004 for his film Nobody Knows. But it really stumps me how Kore-eda manages that with kids every time. Like Father, Like Son is no exception. For example, I really need to know how he captures moments where child actors shriek in true delight while maintaining themselves in character. HOW? If Kore-eda's last film I Wish...

THE WAY HOME Trailer: The Tohoku Disaster And Its Effect On One Family's Shattered Life

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 07:15 AM PST

March 11, 2014 marks three years since the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit Japan. Until this day, Japanese people have been trying to find new ways to cope with this enormous tragedy. Through the art of filmmaking, many of the country's directors wanted to express their need to lessen the impact of that horrifying atomic disaster. Some have succeeded, others have not, but the fact is that many recently released Japanese pictures touch upon the issues that concern those unforgettable events. Although numerous films base their entire narrative on that topic (i.e. Nuclear Nation), there are also pictures that use it only as a catalyst to build a completely different story (i.e. Himizu).First-time director Kubota Nao is about to do the latter with his film The...

Interview: Kore-eda Hirokazu Talks LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

Regarded by many as the best contemporary Japanese filmmaker and spiritual heir to the master filmmaker and humanist, Ozu Yasujiro, Kore-eda Hirokazu has been making quiet, deeply affecting films about childhood, family and death. I told myself not to cry while watching his new film Like Father, Like Son at the New York Festival last fall, but couldn't help tearing up at the end. Soft spoken and with a gentle demeanor, Kore-eda is exactly how I imagined him to be when I sat down for an interview, one early October morning.TWITCH: Many of your films deal with family and childhood and this film is no exception. I'd like to know about the origins of this particular film, which involves a 'switched at birth' story.KORE-EDA HIROKAZU:...

Review: BIG BAD WOLVES, A Black-Humored Psychological Thriller

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

Navot Papushado and Aharon Keshale previously helmed Rabies, which caused quite a bit of buzz at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival and enjoyed a fair amount of critical success thereafter. With their second film, the Israeli duo switches gears from slasher flick to psychological thriller, with a liberal dash of black humor thrown in for good measure. Big Bad Wolves is about a loose canon cop -- 'You're out of control! Turn in your gun and your badge!' -- and the father of a murdered child who decide to take the law into their own hands. Separately. And then as a team. After the alleged murderer/rapist walks due to police misconduct, the two vigilantes kidnap the suspect with the intention of forcing a confession (and...
