Exclusive Interview: Edgar Wright Talks THE WORLD'S END, Politics, Fitness Instructors, And More Posted: 21 Aug 2013 07:00 PM PDT The World's End is the final part of the so-called "Cornetto trilogy", named after the paper wrapped snack ice cream that serves as the kind of processed food glue sticking three of Edgar Wright's films together. From the Zombie mayhem of Shaun of the Dead, the Keanu-like onslaught of Hot Fuzz, and the Twilight Zone drinking game fun of The World's End, the team of Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have helped create some indelible moments with all three projects. I can't say I fell as hard for the third in the series as the other two, but having seen it twice and given it a few weeks to set in, I must admit to many moments that are the equal, if not... |
Shark Attack Movies Sell Everywhere: Trailer For Bollywood's WARNING 3D Posted: 21 Aug 2013 06:30 PM PDT Today Eros Entertainment set free the trailer for Warning 3D, the first shark attack movie in India in quite a long time. Classic trash fans may recall the epically hilarious Jaws ripoff Aatank starring Dharmendra, but that's been nearly 20 years now (though you'd swear it was the early 80s based on the quality). The recent spate of shark attack films in the English speaking world has finally spawned an answer in India, in something that looks like a cross between Bait 3D, Open Water, and Shark Night. Impossibly pretty people on a pleasure cruise getting attacked by questionably believable CG sharks. The film is a production from Anubhav Sinha's newish production company, Benaras MediaWorks. Sinha made his name as a director, starting out with moderate... |
Review: THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES Knows Its Audience Posted: 21 Aug 2013 06:00 PM PDT There's something to be said for a film that knows its audience. We see it in the form of adolescent boy movies all the time, movies targeted to some presumably gendered notion of what speaks to young adults of a particular disposition. The thought, I guess, is that young boy movies have robots in disguise and explosions, and young girl movies have love triangles, cooperative action moments and chaste makeout sessions. I don't make up the rules, I just report on them.Still, for every Twilight series that skewed overtly towards what dominant culture has designated as "female", there were the likes of the Harry Potter books that at least grasped with some sort of gender inclusion, not pandering to a particular demographic. Wizards, then, seem... |
Lock Your Doors: 15 Great Home Invasion Movies You Haven't Seen Posted: 21 Aug 2013 02:45 PM PDT With You're Next opening this Friday on the heels of the massive box office success of The Purge, audiences this year are again questioning the safety of their own homes. It's not at all surprising that the home invasion formula has endured so long in horror movies and thrillers -- after all, what idea strikes more directly and violently at our collective comfort than one exposing the vulnerability of where we live? However, for whatever reason, the cannon of home invasion "classics" is fairly narrow. Critics these days often name-check Straw Dogs, Last House on the Left, Wait Until Dark, and more recently, Funny Games and The Strangers, but ignore a plethora of fascinating, horrifying and sometimes just bizarre entries into the genre. And so, check... |
COMBAT GIRLS Director Returns To Explore The WETLANDS In Trailer For New Sex Comedy Posted: 21 Aug 2013 10:01 AM PDT Those familiar with director David Wnendt and his previous feature Combat Girls aren't likely to think 'sex comedy' when they hear his name. Combat Girls, after all, was a dark and gritty character study, so moving from that to a glossy sex comedy would not be what most consider a typical move. But then, Wetlands (Feuchtgebiete) does not appear to be a typical sex comedy. Adapted from the hit novel by Charlotte Roche and freshly premiered at the Locarno Film Festival, this is by all accounts a brash and bold film - the synopsis for which strikes me as an extremely unlikely (and very compelling) fusion of Catherine Breillat and Judd Apatow. Here's how Wikipedia describes the novel:Set in an anonymous German city, Wetlands is... |
Opening: Wine Is Thicker Than Blood In YOU WILL BE MY SON Posted: 21 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT French actor Niels Arestrup's career spans almost 40 years. He has worked with such directors as Alain Resnais, Chantal Akerman and Claude Sautet. But it's Jacques Audiard's films of the last decade -- The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005), A Prophet (2009) -- in which he plays stern father figures that really put him on the map. With that unmistakable white mane and stop-in-your-tracks stare, he is also fantastic as an overbearing father in Gilles Legrand's You Will Be My Son, a family drama set in the Bordeaux wine region of France.Paul de Marseul (Arestrup) is an owner of prestigious winery. He has a dilemma. He really doesn't like the idea of his meek son Martin (Lorant Deutsch) taking over the business that's been... |
Director Ted Post, 95, Has Died Posted: 21 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT Ted Post, who directed Clint Eastwood Westerns, the weird cult classic The Baby, and the sequels Magnum Force and Beneath the Planet of the Apes, has died. He was 95. His name may not be instantly familiar, but Post was a journeyman director whose career stretched 49 years, beginning on television in 1950. According to the Los Angeles Times report, Post was born in Brooklyn in 1918, worked as a movie theater usher in the the late 30s, considered acting, and then started directing summer stock theater in Long Island. Making the leap to television, he directed dozens of episodes for a variety of shows. He made his feature debut with the 1956 Western The Peacemaker and then carried on with his TV career, which... |

Strip Down With The Trailer For Irish Comedy THE STAG Posted: 21 Aug 2013 08:30 AM PDT Writer-director John Butler knows one thing very well: Nothing good can ever happen of taking a group of men out of the city and putting them in the wild in the company of substances designed to make them even more stupid than usual. Particularly not if this endeavor is undertaken in the name of 'fun'. And yet this is exactly what happens in The Stag.No one makes a less likely candidate for a wild stag party than Fionnan (Hugh O'Conor), a set designer so comfortable in his masculinity that he feels no shame in micromanaging the decor for his forthcoming wedding. But his adoring fiancée, Ruth (Amy Huberman), feels that Fionnan really needs to cut loose in one last bachelor's hurrah with his mates. She... |
Destroy All Monsters: 2013 And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Summer Posted: 21 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT The English language suffered its latest indignity last week, when Google's definition of "literal" was amended to include "not literal." This is the sort of thing that can only happen in North America, where it seems more and more that no one has any idea where the boundary between the real and the imaginary exists anyway - so why not use the word "literally" to emphasize that something is "literally but not literally literally" true? As such, I might forgive Jim Carrey the whole Kick-Ass 2 thing if he stood up right now and said "This movie is literally too violent for me to stand behind as an actor." We could spend our time trying to work out which "literally" Carrey was using in... |
Hey, NYC Or LA! You Could Win A SHORT TERM 12 Prize Pack Posted: 21 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT I can't speak for the rest of my Twitch family, but I for one am a big fan of Destin Daniel Cretton's second feature Short Term 12. Over the year it has raked up a plethora of awards, both audience and jury, starting with SXSW. It's one of those life-affirming movies that isn't preachy or saccharine, but manages to hit home well and good. Brie Larson in the starring role as a foster care facility supervisor knocks it out of the park. Truly, it's one of those indies that is making it out there in a big way, which is always nice to see. If you want more on that front, here is my full review. So while we have this prize pack to giveaway... |
Grab A Stick And Bash Some Heads With The Full Trailer For KL ZOMBIE Posted: 21 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT Woo Ming Jin's Malaysian horror comedy KL Zombie hits local screens at the end of the month, which means now is the time for a full length trailer, and that is precisely what has arrived. English subtitles are included in this one, and they give a good sense of the comedic tone of the film, much of which is provided by hugely popular local comedian Zizan Razak, who you may recognize from the trailer of KL Gangster 2. Take a look at the new trailer below!... |
Lau Ching Wan And Louis Koo Look All Heroic And Stuff In New Trailer For The Pang Brothers' INFERNO Posted: 21 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT If there were ever any filmmakers out there who have managed to squander more goodwill than have Hong Kong directing duo the Pang Brothers, then I'm not entirely sure who that might be. The Pangs started off strong and quickly built a loyal international following but over exposure and agreeing to a ridiculous pace of work that has the duo attempting to release a solo project each plus a Brothers project every year - a move that has dramatically eroded the quality of each film as they simply don't have the time to prepare properly - has whittled away their support to the point that it's been a while since anyone said, "Oooh, a new Pang Brothers film!" with genuine excitement rather than fatigue that... |
