Jason Statham Searching For Action Role In China Posted: 04 Aug 2014 04:00 AM PDT According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Statham, who is currently in Beijing as part of the global promotional tour of his new film The Expendables 3, has voiced his continued interest in finding a suitable Chinese action film project in which to star. Statham starred alongside Taiwanese actress Shu Qi for Hong Kong director Corey Yuen in his career-making 2002 film, The Transporter, and has been hoping to work in Asia ever since. "We (Shu and Yuen) shared a lot of interests and tastes in films," said Statham at a press conference yesterday. "I had this idea, but for years I still haven't fulfilled it...The key is finding the right project with the right person." The British martial artist's sentiments were backed up by Zhang Zhao, CEO of... |
First Teaser For Tsui Hark's THE TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN 3D Reveals A Tiger And A Mountain Posted: 04 Aug 2014 03:08 AM PDT Touted as one of the year's biggest Chinese film's, Tsui Hark's 3D epic The Taking Of Tiger Mountain is set for a 24 December release date in mainland China - one of the year's most hotly contested release windows.Based on Qu Bo's novel detailing a true event, the film is the story of a communist soldier who went deep undercover amongst a gang of remote bandits in order to take them down from within. The film stars Zhang Hangyu, Han Geng, Lin Gengxin and Tong Liya. The first teaser trailer has just hit the Internet, courtesy of Bona Film Group, but offers little in the way of character or plot information - it doesn't even use a proper font for the film's title, instead giving us... |
UPDATED: Studio Ghibli Stops Making Films...Temporarily Posted: 03 Aug 2014 06:00 PM PDT UPDATE: Since news first broke earlier today, more accurate translations of Suzuki Toshio's comments have now surfaced. The veteran Studio Ghibli producer talked about "big changes in all aspects of our operations" which could include a "short break" by the production department. These types of reshuffles and creative hiatuses are apparently not uncommon in Japanese animation companies, but the retirement of Mayazaki Hayao and the relatively lacklutre performance of its last two films means some kind of rethink is definitely in order. Credit to Mark Schilling at Variety for the update.Sad, sad news today. While rumors about this have been circulating for months already, this weekend General Manager Suzuki Toshio confirmed on Japanese television that Studio Ghibli will, for the time being, stop its production... |

THE ADMIRAL: ROARING CURRENTS Lays Waste to Korean Box Office Records Posted: 03 Aug 2014 10:30 AM PDT The Admiral: Roaring Currents has turned the Korean opening weekend record to rubble with 3.34 million admissions ($25.65 million) during its first weekend, which accounted for 65.7% of the marketplace. That represents a 41% increase over the former record, set by Transformers: Dark Of The Moon in 2011 (2.37 million). The film has already banked 4.75 million viewers and $35.4 million since its debut five days ago. The film stars Choi Min-sik as Admiral Yi Sun-shin, who led a small fleet of 13 ships to victory against Japan and its 333 vessels in the Battle of Myeongnyang, which took place in the 16th century. Co-starring as the Japanese admiral is Ryu Seung-ryong and War Of The Arrows (2011) director Kim Han-min is at the helm.... |
Review: THE MAGNETIC TREE Attracts, But Fails To Surprise Posted: 03 Aug 2014 10:00 AM PDT This Spanish-Chilean co-production was among the most lauded of the Valdivia Film Festival last year. Though it failed to win any official festival prizes, The Magnetic Tree (El árbol magnético) was easily one of the most spoken-about movies. It managed to get a local release before even the winner of the Chilean Competition, Raíz (Root), managed to snag one (later this year). But what is it about the film that made possible so many personal connections, both with critics and audience members? I'm guessing that it's an issue of familiarity. The wonderful Manuela Martelli (of Alicia Scherson's The Future) plays Marianela, a young woman who lives and works with her parents. She is now residing in her grandmother's country house, where they are preparing everything... |
Fantasia 2014 Review: THE DROWNSMAN, The Super Soaker Terror Gets Too Silly At Times Posted: 03 Aug 2014 08:00 AM PDT Madison has a fear of water. A year ago she had an accident and nearly drowned. When she was under, she was pulled into the lair of The Drownsman. Since then she will not go near water. She even misses the wedding of her bestie, Hannah, because it was raining that day. Her friends have had enough and they plan an intervention the next day. Screw the honeymoon! With the help of another friend who dabbles in the spiritual world, they attempt to make contact with whatever is terrorizing Madison. Turns out she made contact with Sebastian Donner, aka the Drownsman. Donner was a serial killer who would drown his victims and listen to their heartbeats as they died. Madison must solve the mystery of why... |
Fantasia 2014 Review: THE CREEPING GARDEN Explores The Brave New World Of Plasmodial Slime Mould Posted: 03 Aug 2014 06:00 AM PDT In one of the year's most original and bizarre documentaries, Tim Grabham and Jasper Sharp dive headlong into the largely unknown world of plasmodial slime moulds, and what emerges is a pioneering and at times hypnotic crawl through a largely uncharted realm of mycological study.Audiences will be forgiven for not knowing much, if anything at all, about mycetazoa - commonly known as slime moulds. As it turns out, almost nobody seems to have a clear concept of what these organisms are, or indeed whether they should be classified as plant, animal, funghi or something altogether different. With over 1000 different species currently documented, slime moulds appear to favour humid, damp environments - much like typical funghi - where they can feast on simple carbohydrate-rich plant... |
Review: Strong Effects Play Second Fiddle to Patriotism in THE ADMIRAL: ROARING CURRENTS Posted: 03 Aug 2014 05:00 AM PDT When making films based on significant milestones in a country's history, nationalism can be a great asset in a filmmaker's arsenal but it's also a tool that must be handled carefully, as too much patriotic bombast can mar an otherwise captivating story. Alas, the new period epic The Admiral: Roaring Currents, which chronicles one of Korea's most famed victorious, falls into that category. Formidable effects and a fascinating historical event, akin to a Korean version of 300 on boats, plays second fiddle to sensationalized heroism in this epic war reenactment. Roaring Currents is the big screen treatment of Admiral Yi Sun-shin and the Battle of Myeongnyang, when he commanded a small fleet of 13 ships to victory against the Imperial Japanese navy's 333 vessels. Following... |
