Tony Jaa Goes To Hollywood, Joins FAST AND FURIOUS 7 Posted: 23 Aug 2013 08:15 PM PDT Looks like Dominic Toretto and his crew should be extra careful about how they treat baby elephants, with the news that Thai martial arts superstar Tony Jaa has joined Fast And Furious 7. Directed by James Wan, Fast 7 picks up right where Fast 6 left off, with a massive cliffhanger involving yet another action superstar, Jason Statham. Jaa's part in the film is unknown but the role is his first in a US studio production. Whether or not it will also mark his English-language debut is yet to be seen, as his upcoming Western A Man Will Rise was expected to have some English as it co-stars Dolph Lundgren. Fast 7 will start shooting in September as part of an incredibly quick turnaround to meet... |
I Have Seen Footage From THE RAID 2. And It Is Awesome. Posted: 23 Aug 2013 07:03 PM PDT The audience at last night's Frightfest screening of V/H/S 2 got a special surprise. Gareth Huw Evans (as co-director of one of the segments) came in for the screening, and he brought with him a world exclusive clip from The Raid 2: Berandal. While The Raid 2 begins two hours after the story of the first film ends, the narrative spans about four years, according to Evans, so is much broader in scope. With that in mind, the clip introduces us to a new character. Her name is Hammer Girl. Evans described her fighting style as 'hari mau'. Apparently it means 'tiger style', and it looks outstanding (It's the same style Iko Uwais uses in Merantau). The clip we saw is from an action scene on... |
New To Netflix: A Fine Grabbag of Genre n' Drama Posted: 23 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT Welcome to this week's entry for New To Netflix! Not that we are actually new to Netflix, we are just happy, able, and willing to help you find out what kind of 'Twitch-y' material is coming to the big red virtual envelope in the streaming room from whatever country you may reside in that carries the service. This week we go from Hellraiser to Amour and Sergio Leone to Martin Bonner in perhaps the widest variation of cinema since the inception of this column.... |
Interview: Wong Kar-Wai, Tony Leung And Zhang Ziyi Talk THE GRANDMASTER Posted: 23 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT Director Wong Kar-Wai is renowned for legendarily long incubation periods for his films. Five years after his last movie, Director Wong brings us The Grandmaster, his kung fu-filled biopic of Wing Chun master, Ip Man, which reunites him with 2046's Zhang Ziyi and the Mastroianni to his Fellini, the Mifune to his Kurosawa, Tony Leung. During a hectic New York promotional trip, yours truly was able to have a few words with the director and his stars about why the multiple Ip Man films didn't faze Wong one bit, Leung's Bruce Lee connection and Zhang's retirement from martial arts films. Twitch: Director Wong, the US cut of THE GRANDMASTER is different from the one that was shown in Asia and in the Berlin... |
Larry Fessenden, Simon Barrett And More On Radio Drama Series TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE Posted: 23 Aug 2013 01:30 PM PDT As a child of the 90s, you wouldn't think that I'd be a fan of radio dramas. But I am. Chalk it up to the Star Wars Radio Dramas on NPR (say wha?), The Shadow, Orson Welles, and the fact that I myself loved doing voices and sound effects into a tape recorder. So it's quite awesome to discover that Glass Eye Pix is doing a horror radio play series, or well, doing a second season...Tales From Beyond The Pale, season two will be hitting the interwebs on Friday, September 13th, at $2.99 an episode. Larry Fessenden hosts the series and has directed one episode as well. And why might you want to pay attention to this project? Other horror filmmakers on board include Simon Barrett... |
Watch Donnie Yen Direct The Action In SPECIAL ID Posted: 23 Aug 2013 12:30 PM PDT Action director Donnie Yen is taking the fierce "Ultimate fighting" style as previously shown in the Hong Kong contemporary crime thriller SPL and Flashpoint to the next level in Clarence Fok's Special ID. For the action design, Yen continues to incorporate a variety of Mixed Martial Arts techniques, fusing not only stand-up striking but also Brazilian jiu-jitsu and grappling to choreograph the brutal street brawl while utilizing great fighting talents such as Ken Lo (Drunken Master II), Andy On (Unbeatable) and Collin Chou (Flashpoint). While the latest behind-the-scenes video feature an interview with the action hero himself without English subtitles, it does however showcase his action directing efforts and it looks pretty damn good. There is also an extended version of the BTS video from last... |
Frightfest 2013 Review: DEMENTAMANIA Brings Good Laughs And Scares Posted: 23 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT Poor Ed Arkham is not having a good day. He steps on a strange wasp that somehow found its way into his flat, causing Ed to bleed. His neighbour, with whom he has sex occassionally, doesn't seem to understand that that's all Ed wants from her. He works at a boring office with annoying co-workers, one of whom is promoted above him, and some scary bosses, one of whom wants Ed to do some work on the side or lose his job. On top of all this, the wasp sting seems to be spreading some stranger chemical through his bloodstream, causing him to hallucinate about murdering everyone around him. This leads to some strange outbursts and odd gestures that further alienate him.Dementamania is director Kit... |
Frightfest 2013 Review: Renny Harlin's THE DYATLOV PASS INCIDENT Is A Pass Posted: 23 Aug 2013 11:00 AM PDT I want to declare a moratorium on found footage films. Ever since The Blair Witch Project (the success of which had as much to do with marketing as its format), everyone thinks that all they have to do is have a shaky cam, a few jumps and we're all going to be scared witless. With a few exceptions, such as the [REC] films and Willow Creek, the form has far outworn its welcome. If you want to make a found footage film, you should have to pass a rigourous test to prove that its use is completely justified and is the only way your story can be told.I wish Renny Harlin has been given such a test. What happened to him? Long Kiss Goodnight holds a special... |
Posted: 23 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT I have not seen Howard Ford and Jon Ford's The Dead, and I wasn't sure going in to the sequel if that would hinder my understanding or enjoyment of it. I was informed that The Dead 2: India bears no narrative relation to the first one (other than the presence of zombies), so following the story would not be a problem. And it wasn't; it was straightforward. But as for enjoyment... well, I can say that I didn't hate it, as I often do when the zombie trope gets pulled out yet again. The Fords do seem to be trying to dig a little deeper into metaphor and social commentary; but while The Dead 2 certainly has more to recommend it than a lot of recent... |
Come. It Is Time To Keep Your Appointment With THE WICKER MAN ...Trilogy Posted: 23 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT While we are waiting for the upcoming release of Robin Hardy's so-called "Final Cut" of The Wicker Man (which really just reminds me of singer John Farnham's endless "Last Time" tours), we can be comforted by the news that the cult director plans to add one final film to complete his Wicker Man trilogy. Titled Wrath of the Gods, the film is expected to explore similar themes to the first two films The Wicker Man and The Wicker Tree (thankfully changed from the old title Cowboys of Christ), but with a focus on the gods this time, not on the ones making the offering to them.As reported in Screen Daily:"I am just at the opening stages of financing it (Wrath Of The Gods) and hope to... |
Raven Banner To Screen 20 Minutes Of SAVAGED At Fan Expo This Weekend! Posted: 23 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT It was towards the end of last year that we set our eyes upon the teaser trailer for Michael Ojeda's revenge thriller Savaged. And while the production is continuing to put the finishing touches in post Raven Banner is going to treat visitors to Fan Expo here in Toronto. On Sunday, August 25th, at noon in Room 707, Raven Banner will screen 20 minutes from the upcoming film. While travelling across country, Zoe, a lovely deaf mute woman, stumbles on a horrific crime - a gang of rednecks slaughtering two Native American boys. Zoe's brave attempt to save one of the boys seals her fate. She is captured, raped and left for dead. When an Indian shaman finds her clinging to life in a shallow grave... |
Watch Josh Duhamel As You've Never Seen Him In An Exclusive Clip From SCENIC ROUTE Posted: 23 Aug 2013 08:45 AM PDT Scenic Route, by directing duo Kevin and Michael Goetz, is already out on VOD and will be released theatrically this Friday, August 23rd. We have an exclusive clip from the film to share with you. The one thing that stands out right away is the physical appearance of Josh Duhamel. I had to do a double-take there for a moment; the mohawk and the vomiting and the disrobing. This is not the Duhamel I thought I knew. Mitchell (Josh Duhamel) and Carter (Dan Fogler), life-long friends who have drifted apart, are on a road trip when their old pickup breaks down, leaving them stranded on an isolated desert road. Nobody can pick apart a man like his best friend, and as the relentless elements of the... |
Posted: 23 Aug 2013 08:30 AM PDT The 12th edition of the Mexico City International Horror Film Festival, simply known as Macabro (Spanish for macabre), will be celebrated from August 23 to September 1, in seven venues around the city: Cineteca Nacional (the Cinematheque), Centro Cultural Universitario, Cinematógrafo del Chopo, Centro Cultural Carranza, Cine Lido, Museo Laboratorio Arte Alameda, and the Museo Panteón de San Fernando. Macabro 2013 is paying homage to "horror divas". There are films with female characters (Eyes Without a Face, The Innocents) and by directors like Elisabeth Fies (The Commune) and Antonia Bird (Ravenous), as well as a short film retrospective of Sharon Toribio and a Viscera Film Festival selection. The festival's definitive highlight is a "giallo retrospective", dedicated to Luigi Cozzi and Lamberto Bava (Mario Bava's son). Both Italian directors... |
Miyazaki Happy For EVANGELION Creator To Direct NAUSICAA 2 Posted: 23 Aug 2013 08:15 AM PDT As reported by ANN, Miyazaki Hayao was asked in a TV interview if he was interested in making a sequel to his early classic Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind, to which he replied, "No, I don't. I don't really feel like doing it, but Anno (Hideaki) keeps on saying, 'I want to do it! I want to do it!' So I tell him now that I've come to think lately that if he wanted to do it, it would be fine for him to do it."Miyazaki's Nausicaa film was based on the first parts of his own manga, and Anno worked as a key animator on the film before later going on to direct the landmark anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. The pair has... |
