Masacre En Xoco 2013 Interview (Part 1 Of 3): Mauricio Matamoros & José Luis Ortega On The Origin Of The 35mm Horror Showing

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 10:30 AM PST

Since 2010, Masacre en Xoco has been Cineteca Nacional's annual showing of both classic and contemporary horror cinema on 35mm (or 16mm). As we all know, digital projection has replaced celluloid and at Mexico's Cinematheque things are no different. Hence Masacre en Xoco has become the one and only opportunity for horror aficionados in Mexico City to revive or experience for the first time what is like to watch films like The Evil Dead on its original 35mm format. For the fourth edition, kicking off next week (12/26), curators Mauricio Matamoros Durán and José Luis Ortega put together another magnificent selection, which include classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Mexico City premiere of Here Comes the Devil. I had the good fortune...

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

Welcome to the fifth and final gift guide episode of 2013! It has been a fun ride sorting through all this stuff and finding entertaining ways to let you know it's out there for your gifting pleasure. In a way I have saved the best for last (though NOTHING) beats that Zatoichi box set from Criterion). Well maybe one thing. Want a shirt worn during the shooting of Burn Notice? A shirt worn by Sam Axe aka Bruce Campbell himself? That's right you can sniff the pits to your hearts content but first you have to you win.And the only way to win is watch this episode. All of it. Yet Another Trailer For Perpetually Delayed Russian Horror VIY 3D

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST

It was all the way back in November of 2005 that we first wrote about Oleg Stepchenko's Viy, an effects driven adaptation of a classic tale by Nikolai Gogol, and to describe the film's road to completion from that time as tortuous is a bit of an understatement. With a constantly ballooning budget that is now reported as well more than double what was originally budgeted the film is now eight years on from the release of the original teaser, having been altered and re-engineered so many times that it's impossible to say what actually remains from the original work. I can say this, though: What began as a purely Russian production with an all Russian cast is now listed as a Germany / UK /...

Check The Official Poster For Tommy Wirkola's DEAD SNOW 2: RED VS DEAD

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

The Norwegian undead are returning to Sundance with the coming of Tommy Wirkola's Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead and we've got your first look at the official poster or the film. Here's how the festival describes the sequel to Wirkola's hit horror comedy:If the worst day of your life consisted of accidentally killing your girlfriend with an axe, chain-sawing your own arm off, and watching in horror as your closest friends were devoured by a zombified Nazi battalion, you'd have to assume that things couldn't get much worse. In Martin's case, that was only the beginning. Picking up immediately where the original left off, Dead Snow; Red vs. Dead wastes no time getting right to the gore-filled action, leaving a bloody trail of intestines in...

Kurosawa's SEVENTH CODE: Maeda Atsuko Gets Kidnapped By Russian Mafia In First Trailer

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 08:30 AM PST

Although Kurosawa Kiyoshi's latest film Seventh Code had its world premiere last month at Rome Film Festival, the first official trailer was released just a few hours ago today via Cinema Today's official website. Being a very innovative director, Kurosawa stunned the world many times with his genre-bending creations and quickly became a pioneer of Japanese film industry. While most known for many highly acclaimed, atmospheric, and penetrating thriller-chillers (i.e. The Cure, Pulse, Sakebi), his early 2013 venture into science fiction territory called Real opened to rather mixed reviews. Now he comes back with a thriller that centers on a mysterious girl (played by Japanese idol turned film star Maeda Atsuko) wandering around Vladivostok, Russia in search of lost love. I'm sure we all have high hopes that Seventh Code...

Meet the Grand Cast of THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST

I'm very tempted to go to Berlinale in February just to see Wes Anderon's new film The Grand Budapest Hotel open the festival. Past romance, part Agatha Christie-style mystery, Anderson has gathered some of his usual troupe (Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson) and added in some brilliant ones (F. Murray Abraham, Saoirse Ronan, Léa Seydoux, Mathieu Amalric). And hats off to him for finally giving Ralph Fiennes a comedic role, the man does not get enough of those.THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL recounts the adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.  The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting...

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST

Big Ass Spider. the crowd-pleasing favorite from the festival circuit, has had its limited theatrical run and was On Demand on most major platforms, and will be arriving on DVD and Bluray on January 7th. To mark the impending release you can watch the opening 3 minutes (ish) of the film for free: In this 'Shaun of The Dead' meets 'Tremors' horror-monster-comedy, a failed military experiment results in a 100-foot giant spider rampaging across the city of Los Angeles. When everything else fails, a military unit (RAY WISE and CLARE KRAMER) enlists the help of a clever exterminator (GREG GRUNBERG) and his Hispanic security guard sidekick (LOMBARDO BOYAR) to kill the creature before the entire city is destroyed. The opening sequence certainly delivers on the title's promise. It...
