Review: SNOWPIERCER Fires On All Cylinders

Cinema is a medium of motion and if anyone understands this, it appears to be Bong Joon-ho, whose visionary new work is a demented and stunning thrillride. In his first production outside his native South Korea, Bong has delivered his most ambitious project yet, and proves more than capable of handling an international, multilingual cast and a large budget. When a global warming solution backfires, the Earth is enveloped in a new Ice Age and almost annihilates the human race. The few thousand survivors live aboard a lone train that perpetually circumnavigates the otherwise dead planet. The train's creator, Wilford, leads from the engine at the front, while the tail is inhabited by low class citizens. Each day they are subjected to humiliating atrocities, and...

"We're Just Here For The Bad Guys": New Trailer For THE DIRTIES Drops

Posted: 22 Jul 2013 12:01 AM PDT

An absolute favorite of mine when it premiered and won the top two prizes at the 2013 Slamdance Film Festival, Matt Johnson's The Dirties has been turning heads and racking up awards all year long on the festival circuit for its genuinely funny, horrifying, heartfelt, and above all else, intelligent look at the subject of school shootings. It is easily the most timely film of 2013, and may be the most important. With the film opening in theaters and On Demand October 4th through Phase 4 and Kevin Smith's Movie Club, we now have a newly cut trailer that should tell you all you need to know.Disclaimer: While my opinion is independent of this, XYZ Films, which is affiliated with Twitch, were the U.S. Sales...

Terrence Malick Sued By Investors For Not Going On His VOYAGE OF TIME

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 09:35 PM PDT

An investment group that gave director Terrence Malick millions of dollars to direct a project he described as "one of my greatest dreams" is now suing him, alleging that he has forgotten to produce said project. The project is Voyage of Time, and as Malick described it, it would "portray the events of our cosmic history, as well as the state of the earth now and the prospects for its future." The film would be a daunting project, with destinations in Southwestern U.S, Hawaii, Iceland, Monterey, Chile, Palau, The Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and elsewhere. Malick was under contract to make two Imax films at about 45 minutes a tick and then a feature length film clocking in anywhere between 90 to 150 minutes. Any Malick...

LYGON STREET: SI PARLA ITALIANO Showcases the Post-World War II Migrant Experience

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 07:30 PM PDT

For a country built so much on recent immigration, there are remarkably few stories of the immigrant experience told in Australia, especially those from those who came here after the Second World War. I know, I've looked. As a second generation Australian myself I've always wanted to find stories that talked about what it was like for migrants to settle in Australia during that time, what they had to deal with, the businesses they started, traditions they carried on and evolved, and ultimately how their communities helped change the face of the wider nation. The emergence of Lygon Street: Si parla Italiano as one of the popular documentaries screening at the upcoming Melbourne International Film Festival proves there are plenty more who want to see these...

Japan Cuts 2013 Interview: Toyoda Toshiaki Talks I'M FLASH!

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 07:00 PM PDT

A surefire favorite around these here parts, Toyoda Toshiaki is now also a bonafide staple of NYAFF and Japan Cuts, as he's screened his last three films there. And it all seems a sure thing that he'll be returning every year with one. Diva Velez got the full scoop when she sat down with Toyoda earlier this month to talk about his latest I'M FLASH!, a film that tackles the themes of death, family, religion and idol-ism with as much fervor as it does philosophy. [ed. Ben Umstead]  Toshiaki Toyoda: Before we start, I have to apologise; I got off the flight [from Japan] two or three hours ago and I'm completely jet-lagged. Twitch: Well, thank you for being here under those conditions. Last year during...

PiFan 2013: RESOLUTION Boys Go Korean Revenge Thriller

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 06:00 PM PDT

When Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead's eerie and intriguing horror film Resolution eventually finishes its festival run, they should put together all the wonderful videos they have made into an amazing short (or would it be feature length at this point?) On the eve of their visit to Pifan, they've put together another one. And of course, went with a Korean revenge thriller style theme. Hopefully Aaron will find Justin before it's too late and some Hollywood studio tries to remake their film. Check it out below....

Fantasia 2013 Review: THE BATTERY Bravely Sidesteps The Usual Zombie Routine

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 05:00 PM PDT

Companionship and camaraderie are at the heart of Jeremy Gardner's micro-indie Zom-Dram, The Battery. What? You say. Another filmmaker making a buddy/zombie movie with no money and the usual tropes and jokes?  Not so with this one, which spends its time far more in the silent spaces of the zombie apocalypse. A character gets drunk and sings a song in an empty house as a coping mechanism for this silence. It's not the zombies, but the lack of a purpose that might be the real killer. While there is certainly a structured narrative here, it is the character beats and 'hanging out' aspects' of the film that drive it. The film offers its pleasures in the lead characters of Ben and Mickey, two scavenger-survivors wandering around...

NYAFF 2013 Interview: Director Jang Cheol-soo Talks SECRETLY, GREATLY

Posted: 21 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Diva Velez recently sat down with Jang Cheol-soo, the man behind the 2010 horror Bedeviled, to chat about his latest film, Secretly, Greatly, a spy vs. spy, North vs. South film that equally plots itself as a comedy, actioner and drama. A massive hit at home in South Korea, the film had its international premiere at the New York Asian Film Festival before opening in New York and LA this past Friday. For readers that have yet to see the film, be warned, major story points are discussed throughout the following interview [ed. Ben Umstead]  Twitch: What inspired you to take on this project? Jang Cheol-soo: This film is based on a webcomic [Covertness by Hun] that is very popular in South Korea. After I read...
