ROSEMARY'S BABY To Be Delivered On TV Posted: 10 Dec 2013 07:30 PM PST It's been announced that US network NBC has given the go-ahead for a four hour miniseries of Ira Levin's 1967 novel, Rosemary's Baby. Roman Polanski has already adapted the story of a satanic pregnancy with his Mia Farrow starring 1968 classic of the same name. Farrow played Rosemary Woodhouse, a young woman who moves into a beautiful old apartment building with her struggling actor husband Guy. They are soon introduced to eccentric old neighbors Minnie and Roman Castevet who become a constant presence in their life, especially after Rosemary becomes pregnant and begins to display increasingly unusual symptoms. The series will be directed by fellow Pole Agnieszka Holland who first made a name for herself as part of the Polish New Wave and has been most... |
BAD BOYS 3 In The Works? Whatcha Gonna Do? Posted: 10 Dec 2013 07:00 PM PST Ah, Bad Boys. I have a soft spot in my heart for these films. The first one came out when I was in college. Myself and some classmates were surrounded and questioned by police about a car theft in the area as we waited for the bus to head over to the cinema. "What are you boys doing tonight?" (Sheepish look) "Going to see Bad Boys, officer". It shows you the caliber of Toronto's police when they question guys at a bus stop about stolen cars. Moving on! Word has it that scribe David Gueggenheim is being courted by Sony Pictures to pen a third installment for the franchise. Gueggenheim wrote Safe House and its upcoming sequel, and upcoming projects like Narco Sub, Puzzle Palace and an... |
Sundance Announces Their 2014 Shorts Programs Posted: 10 Dec 2013 02:45 PM PST Why there are many, many features to get all excited or overwhelmed about at a festival as big as Sundance, it's also big enough to both fit a robust shorts program, something that I think many folks forget. I am of the mind that if you really want to keep a pulse on the up and coming talent in the world of filmmaking than it is usually the shorts program you should be looking at as many of those directors get their start right here. From U.S. Narrative, International Narrative, Documentary and animated, get to know the films and their makers who could be touting the next hot feature a few years down the road. ... |
CALVARY: Watch The Trailer For John Michael McDonagh's Sundance Selected Follow Up To THE GUARD Posted: 10 Dec 2013 12:30 PM PST When writer-director John Michael McDonagh teamed up with star Brendan Gleeson for The Guard the result was a little bit of magic, one of the funniest black comedies I'd come across in quite some time bolstered by some truly remarkable performances and a fascinatingly flawed and fully fleshed out leading character. So the fact that McDonagh and Gleeson have re-teamed for Calvary while adding the likes of Chris O'Dowd and Dylan Moran into the mix? It does lead to very high expectations. Expectations which the brand new trailer seem to indicate will be met rather well, just fine, and perhaps I should raise them a little higher while I'm at it.Calvary is a blackly comedic drama about a priest tormented by his community. Father James... |
SOME VELVET MORNING: Watch An Exclusive Clip From Neil LaBute's Latest Posted: 10 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST Death At A Funeral director Neil LaBute won much love at Tribeca for his latest offering - the Stanley Tucci and Alice Eve starring Some Velvet Morning - and with the film hitting iTunes and VOD today prior to a limited theatrical opening December 13th we're proud to share an exclusive clip from the film.Fred (Stanley Tucci) arrives at the doorstep of his beautiful young mistress Velvet (Alice Eve) after four years apart, claiming to have finally left his wife. BIG BAD WOLVES U.S. Trailer Proves Maniacs Are Afraid Of Maniacs Posted: 10 Dec 2013 10:45 AM PST Big Bad Wolves, Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado's follow up to their break-out Rabies, has been a festival darling since its Tribeca premiere last spring, equally delighting and grossing out audiences in its transgressive take on the serial killer subgenre, and most recently getting a Tarantino stamp of approval as his favorite film of the year. Our own Joshua Chaplinsky had this to say at Tribeca: There is a good deal of humor to help balance out the harsher realities of the subject matter, but it isn't until the cop, the victim's father, and the suspect are holed up in a dingy basement that I realized just how funny Big Bad Wolves was.Magnet snatched up the U.S. rights and will be releasing it in theaters... |
GODZILLA Trailer Presents A Monstrous Nightmare Posted: 10 Dec 2013 10:10 AM PST The first trailer for Gareth Edwards' version of Godzilla makes a very strong case that it won't be another cookie-cutter blockbuster. Edwards' first film, Monsters, struck me as "languid and dreamy," fulfilling his wish "to begin where every other monster movie ends." This teaser has the quality of a waking nightmare, as paratroopers parachute into a situation that none of them has ever experienced before. The official synopsis is brief: "An epic rebirth to Toho's iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world's most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence." Godzilla stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche, and the big guy from Japan. It's heading to theaters on May 16, 2014.... |
Atrocity, Art, And Miyazaki's THE WIND RISES Posted: 10 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST Even as it was earning the Best Animated feature accolade from the Boston Film Critics Society over the weekend, The Wind Rises continued to be dogged by the same controversy which has trailed it since its release back in Japan. Specifically, what animator Miyazaki Hayao is calling his final film is being challenged as doing some excessive flag-waving for WWII Japan or not being patriotic enough according to some netizens back in the director's native country. Consider Village Voice critic Inkoo Kang in the former camp, calling Miyazaki's lyrical drama about the engineer of the Zero bomber as "morally repugnant." Some choice quotes from Kang: The Japanese Imperial Army killed 30 million people -- a fact that is barely alluded to by the film. As... |
Kiki Flies In With The First Full Trailer For Live-Action KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE Posted: 10 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST The long wait is finally over! The film's official website has been updated today with the first trailer for Shimizu Takashi's live action Kiki's Delivery Service. Everyone's beloved little witch (played by Koshiba Fuka) is back and appears more dazzling than ever. Apart from exploring the setting from the previous teaser, this time we can also catch a glimpse of her fantastic adventures. The film looks rather cute, colorful, and pleasant but there's definitely too much green screen and CGI here as well, what in the long run might prove to be its biggest problem.Kiki's Delivery Service isn't based on the 1989 Studio Ghibli picture, but on Kadono Eiko's series of children's fantasy novels. Both fans of the original anime and avid readers of the the books should... |
