Review: THE LAST FLOOR (OSTATNIE PIETRO), Unsettling Yet Incoherent Posted: 12 Dec 2013 03:00 AM PST In Tadeusz Krol's latest psychological thriller The Last Floor (Ostatnie Pietro) one man's paranoia becomes ridiculously overwhelming when he accidentally discovers that the military unit he's been serving in for his entire life is entangled in a mysterious criminal affair. At almost exactly the same time, his wife's ex-lover shows up in the seemingly peaceful town. To make a horrible situation even worse, his son gets beaten up in school for the traditional, albeit very radical and discriminatory values to which his father strongly adheres. The man, an experienced Polish army captain Derczynski (Janusz Chabior), begins to lose his mind in a situation that requires nothing more than calmness and perceptiveness. It's a rather slow and cumulative process, but a relatively violent and horrifying one. He... |
Review: NO MAN'S LAND Exposes The Funny Side Of China's Dark Soul Posted: 12 Dec 2013 12:50 AM PST After nearly four years grappling with the Chinese censorship board, Ning Hao's darkly comic crime caper finally comes to the screen and proves largely worth the wait.Back in 2009, Shanxi-born filmmaker Ning Hao was shaping up to be one of China's most exciting young filmmakers. His 2005 feature, Mongolian Ping Pong, had proved a hit on the festival circuit, and his follow-up, the comedy caper Crazy Stone, was produced by Andy Lau and became a surprise domestic hit at the Chinese box office. The film helped launch the career of comedian Huang Bo, who also starred in Ning's next film, Crazy Racer, in which Ning continued to develop his style of employing different regional dialects, witty wordplay, slapstick humour and riffing heavily on well known Chinese... |
Review: THE RAILWAY MAN, A Difficult But Confused Adaptation Posted: 11 Dec 2013 11:30 PM PST Japan's involvement and subsequent denial in its atrocities of World War II has always been a difficult point to convey. The Railway Man, which is based on the incredible true account of soldier Eric Lomax, attempts to tell this story and honour his book and memory. Unfortunately the results are so middling and inadequate compared to the book, and so emotionless compared to the phenomenal searing tones of director Jonathan Teplitzky's previous work Burning Man, that it lets the complex story down considerably. The setting could be any time and place, given the lack of period detail, but it is in fact years after the war. Teplitzky's eye for vivid and emotional colour certainly does not go astray and from dreary England to exotic jungle, the colour... |
Posted: 11 Dec 2013 05:00 PM PST Throughout Asia, Andy Lau pretty much epitomises the term superstar. His popularity as an actor and a singer is immense, and indeed few people can match his on-screen charisma. A commanding presence in all his films, good and bad, Lau is always watchable. This weekend he's primed to set the Chinese box office alight once again, with the release of his latest action thriller, Firestorm, which we reviewed here (link). Below I've assembled a gallery of six close-ups of one of my favorite thespians to make a quiz. Click through the images and guess which six movies they're from. No competition, no prizes, just for fun. See how far you get without using IMDB. And I'll post the answers next Saturday (earlier if someone gets... |

Destroy All Monsters: Wonder Gal Posted: 11 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST Is it fair play to discuss Gal Gadot's casting as Wonder Woman (announced last week for a role in Zack Snyder's untitled Batman vs. Superman project) in terms of body type? On first blush the immediate conversation around the size of Gadot's breasts seemed both crass and ridiculous. It was an online caricature of the fanboy archetype, writ large; to say nothing of being the exact sort of commodification-based categorization of female performers that runs riot across the film industry. After getting in a few slap-fights on Twitter last Wednesday night, I gave up and went home. To an extent, though, the critics pointing to Gadot's slender frame are raising a valid point of contention against the visual personality of the character she's playing. Depending... |
