Twitch's Best Of 2013 - Best Actor

The year that was 2013 has run its course, so the time has come for Team Twitch to pool its ever-growing troupe of contributors from the four corners of the planet, gather its collective thoughts and pay special tribute to those films that have made a particularly strong impact over the past twelve months.  2013 was a great year for films, but also a fantastic year for lead performances. Some of the best screen actors currently working stepped up to the plate and delivered some of their best work in years, while a number of emerging and jobbing performers stepped out of the shadows and onto the world stage where their abilities were on full display. Here are Twitch's favourite male performances of the year:...

Joshua Chaplinsky's Favorite Films of 2013 Are Better Than Yours

Posted: 31 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST

I mean, that's gotta be what he thinks, right? Or else why would he be putting them on the internet for all to see? (And by "all" we mean obligated friends and family members, and those precious few window shoppers who happen to happen by.) It's not like he has a unique angle, like "The Year's Best Educational Films Directed by Chechen War Widows." He's not the foremost authority on 21st Century Bar Mitzvah videos. He's just some dude who watches a lot of movies. Assuming, for a moment, that anyone who rises from the Comments section to write about a subject at length isn't just out to bludgeon people with their opinions, we have to ask: What is their motivation? Where does the compulsion...

Now On Blu-ray: SWEETWATER, A Mixed Bag Of Violent Acts

Posted: 31 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

Sweetwater, a Western from Logan and Noah Miller, is out on Blu-ray and DVD today via Arc Entertainment. Bill Graham wrote about Sweetwater when it played at Dallas IFF this year. He wrote in part: "Violent and dark, this feels like a William Friedkin-esque attempt at a Western set in the New Mexico territory around the 1800s. There are rare spurts of humor and most of it is from the way that people are dispatched without hesitation by the mostly straight-faced cast. ... Those moments of levity, though, aren't often enough to elevate the film beyond anything more than a forgettable piece of entertainment." I watched the film this weekend preparing for its release and I feel it is a mixed bag of violent acts begetting more violent...

Why THE WOLF OF WALL STREET Is A Horror Movie

Posted: 31 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST

Note: Major spoilers abound. Martin Scorsese is a master of horror, whether he realizes it or not. Of course, if one simply adds up the piles of dead bodies from his violent gangster films like Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, and The Departed, one would expect to have a count that could easily be equal to any small-scale massacre. The real terror to this writer is that of humanity's intentions, and Scorsese often opts to delve into the horrors of humans doing ghastly things to each other in the name of status, money, and power. Strangely, his latest film is likely the funniest movie you'll ever see about greed, and it might remain that unless you peer beyond the superficial veneer of excess and...

Now On DVD: CASSADAGA, Conquering Gruesome Horror With Reasonable Behavior

Posted: 31 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

More of a mystery drama than any kind of suspense or horror piece, Cassadaga is an ideal movie to watch at home. It's quiet and comes together slowly, its modest assets eventually asserting themselves as the disparate story elements coalesce into an empathetic portrayal of a woman dealing with troubling memories. Here's the official synopsis: Cassadaga tells the story of Lily Morel (Kelen Coleman), a post-lingually deaf artist, who participates in a séance in the spiritualist community of Cassadaga. But instead of getting closure with her recently departed sister, Lily contacts the vengeful ghost of a murdered woman. As the ghost becomes increasingly angry and violent, Lily rushes to unravel the mysterious circumstances surrounding the woman's death - a task that will bring her face-to-face...
