During the production and after moving to a new home, a series of unexplained phenomena start plaguing the couple, eventually derailing the production of the show. Rachel, growing increasingly paranoid, starts to believe that there might be something seriously wrong with their unborn bundle of joy. Interview: Christopher Nelius Talks Big Wave Surfing Documentary STORM SURFERS 3D

Posted: 14 Jun 2013 11:01 AM PDT

Storm Surfers 3D offers far more than run-of-the-mill nature-porn docs. Sure, it's got tremendous footage of waves and silly people on funny boards trying to catch them. I saw the film on a big screen last September at TIFF, and was blown away by the spectacle. Yet the film is actually quite a bit more sophisticated than random shots of water churning. Tracing the friendship of Australian big-wave legends Tom Carroll and Ross Clark-Jones, the film treads more than water, delving into notions of mortality, aging, and the visceral thrill of the hunt.I spoke to co-director Christopher Nelius via Skype while he was in the UK. TWITCH: How did you convince the reticent Tom and Ross to open up about their feelings, as much as...

Aramaki Shinji's upcoming big screen adaptation of Space Pirate Captain Harlock is, without a doubt, one of the more anticipated events of the anime world. LAFF 2013 Review: SHORT TERM 12 Is The Rare Film That Gets Child-Adult Relationships Right

Posted: 14 Jun 2013 10:00 AM PDT

As someone who has spent much of his adult life working extensively with children and teenagers (from being a kindergarten aide to high school substitute, to a 1:1 aide at home and in school) I am always very wary going into films that deal with adult-child relationships that fall somewhat outside of domestic/parental roles. My concern stems from the notion that the filmmakers are coming to the subject as an outsider; approaching the material as a cute novelty of cinema. Treating it as a sentimental or melodramatic trope rather than mining for an authentic experience of adolescence, as well as the trials of the adults who must endure and support this journey. There is only so much research or prep work that can be done...

Mikkelsen Gets His Gun In First Shot From Danish Western THE SALVATION

Posted: 14 Jun 2013 08:30 AM PDT

A Danish western? I can't say that it's the first genre I'd expect to come from the Nordic nation but given the high number of Scandinavian settlers who emigrated to North America in the 1800s there is certainly some history there to explore. And if it gives someone the chance to put a shotgun in Mads Mikkelsen's hands, then so much the better.1870s America. When settler John kills his family's murderer, he unleashes the fury of notorious gang leader Delarue. Betrayed by his corrupt and cowardly community, the peaceful pioneer must turn vengeful hunter, slay the outlaws, and cleanse the town's black heart. Mikkelsen plays the lead role in The Salvation, the latest from writer-director Kristian Levring. Eva Green, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Eric Cantona, Mikael...

Review: 20 FEET FROM STARDOM Is A Musically Joyous Masterpiece

Posted: 14 Jun 2013 08:00 AM PDT

It's never bad when a film starts with some philosophizing from the Boss. Talking about the documentary's subjects, the oft anonymous backup singers that have brought beautiful harmonies to generations of artists, Mr. Springsteen explains the challenge for many of these supreme talents to shine in the centerstage spotlight. "It's a bit of a walk" he offers, "That walk to the front is complicated. It's almost more of a conceptual leap. You've got to have that narcism, that ego. It can be a pretty long walk."20 Feet From Stardom shows us those that have made the walk, and those that have found their place within the bedrock of the songs they perform. The film is ambitious, infectious and often simply spine-chillingly funky, with some revealing...

Stellan Skarsgard And A Battered Kristofer Hivju Share A Laugh In First Shot From THE PRIZE IDIOT

Posted: 14 Jun 2013 07:40 AM PDT

Director Hans Petter Moland won a lot of fans around these parts with his 2010 effort A Somewhat Gentle Man. The Berlin selected comedy starred Stellan Skarsgard as a man freshly released from prison and trying to put his life back together and was laced with such a brilliantly understated and darkly absurd sense of humor that it was impossible not to fall for both the character and the film. And now Moland and Skarsgard are back together for The Prize Idiot (Kraftidioten).Nils drives a snow blower and lives a carefree life in the winter paradise, Beitostølen. His son's sudden death puts him in the middle of a drug war between Norwegian mafia and the Serbians. In this world he is a beginner - armed...

Review: CALL ME KUCHU Sheds Light on Gays' Plight in Uganda

Posted: 14 Jun 2013 07:00 AM PDT

There hasn't been a lot of good P.R. for civil rights in Uganda in the last few years, what with its parliament's proposed legislation that would make homosexual activity punishable by death. Call Me Kuchu, a powerful documentary by first-time filmmakers Katherine Fairfax Wright and Malika Zouhali-Worrall, doesn't cast the country's anti-gay movement in a favorable light at all -- which is to say, it depicts the anti-gay movement fairly and accurately -- but it finds inspiration in the brave efforts of Uganda's small community of gay activists. Taking its title from a Ugandan slang term for gays and lesbians, "Call Me Kuchu" focuses primarily on David Kato, the first openly gay man in Uganda (!) who serves as the LGBT community's unofficial leader. To...
