Monster Pictures has announced that it will be releasing Richard Bates Jr., directorial debut, Excision, on limited release in UK cinemas on 2 November. I came across the film at PiFan earlier this summer, and it's a delightfully deranged coming-of-age thriller about delusional high-schooler Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord), who obsesses over death, anatomy and performing vivisections on roadkill. Her parents fail to understand her, as do her teachers and classmates. Only little sister Grace (Ariel Winter) - who suffers from cystic fibrosis - seems to get Pauline, so she sets out to do what any responsible big sister should do, and cure Grace of her illness herself! The film boasts a great lead performance from McCord and a strong supporting cast that includes Malcolm McDowell, Traci Lords...

Review: BARFI! - Sometimes Too Much Of A Good Thing Is Just Enough

I can't imagine that the box office failure of Anurag Basu's attempted international crossover romance film, Kites, was far from the director's mind when he got to work on his latest film, Barfi! (the exclamation point is part of the title). Kites was targeted by the powers that be in Bollywood to be among the first genuine international hits to come from India. In the service of that goal, star Hrithik Roshan was joined by a Mexican leading lady, Barbara Mori, and American director Brett Ratner, no stranger to the top of the box office charts himself, was called in to re-edit the film from a smidge over two hours down to a 90 minute version, unfortunately redubbed Kites: The Remix. In spite of a...

Johnnie To Declares A DRUG WAR In New Teaser

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 04:47 PM PDT

After stepping away from the frantic directing pace of the past several years while also favoring romantic comedies as two of his last three directorial efforts, Hong Kong action maestro Johnnie To is coming back in a big way over the next year. To has a pair of crime films in the works, the first of which reunites the prolific director with frequent collaborator Wai Ka-Fai.Louis Koo takes the lead in To's Drug War, and while the project was shot in mainland China the first teaser gives no indication that To has softened his typical style to suit the local censors. After floating around in bootleg form for the past week the first teaser recently arrived in proper style. Take a look below....

Born in 2003 as a new venture from former executives of the venerable Rhino Records, Shout! Factory has turned itself into one of the most trustworthy independent home video labels out there. Cult films fans have deified Shout! Factory for their extensive and comprehensive releases of the films from Roger Corman's New Horizons production company, as well as their hundreds of releases of classic TV cartoons like Jem!, GI Joe, and Transformers. A few weeks ago Shout! Factory made a lot of horror film fans very happy with the announcement of their new classic horror imprint, Scream Factory, and with their Blu-ray release of Rick Rosenthal's Halloween II, they are off to a running start.Halloween II may be the most obscure title to get two...

Concept Art And Behind The Scenes Shots From Carlos Gananian's AMFM

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 03:00 PM PDT

It was all the way back in 2006 that Brazilian director Carlos Gananian wowed us with his atmospheric vampire short Akai. A film that demonstrated Gananian's uncommon ability to carry a story almost entirely without dialogue, Akai marked Gananian as a director to keep a very close eye on. It's been a long wait.Brazil is not a nation known for supporting genre film and while figures such as Coffin Joe have made a mark around the globe it is often a struggle for young filmmakers, no matter how gifted, to make any sort of progress there whatsoever. Like Dennison Ramalho, who waited through a seven year gap between Love For Mother Only and his stunning latest effort Ninjas and is still trying to mount his...

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 01:50 PM PDT

As the Toronto International Film Festival draws to a close and our weary team will return to their homes, families and regular day jobs tomorrow the festival announced the award winners. The People's Choice trophy went to David O. Russell's Silver Lining Playbook. The film stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, along with Robert De Niro, Julia Stiles and Chris Tucker among others. This prize usually leads to a strong run to the Oscars as it had for previous winners like Slumdog Millionaire, The Kings Speech and American Beauty. The most popular choice among Midnight Madness attendees was Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths. You can read Todd's review of the film here.On the home front the winner for favorite Canadian feature went to Xavier Dolan's Laurence...

Lock Up Your Loved Ones From The Evil That Is MONSTER FEST!

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 09:30 AM PDT

Australia ... prepare to lock up your loved ones for a festival of spills, thrills and chills, this is the midnight madness Melbourne needs, nay deserves! (Note: the following prepared statement may contain a mild amount of hyperbole.) MONSTER FEST is not your normal film festival. It is "gorgeousness and gorgosity made flesh" - a genre love-in for drooling cinema fiends with a fetish for the fantastic. What started in November 2011 as the Fantastic Asia Film Festival (FAFF) has miraculously transformed into this larger, more imposing, more aggressive beast called MONSTER FEST. The opportunity to open up FAFF into a monster-sized celebration of genre cinema in all its gruesome glory was just too good an opportunity to miss. Horror, fantasy, science-fiction, action and erotica...
