Documentary SLUIZER SPEAKS Has A Trailer, Needs Some Funds Posted: 26 Mar 2013 07:14 PM PDT In October of 2012, at the Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht, the famous Dutch director George Sluizer presented to the public what will quite probably be his last film: the unfinished-for-twenty-years Dark Blood. The thriller starred River Phoenix but the production was abruptly stopped when the young actor suddenly died in 1993. However, George famously had the footage stolen and recently worked to make it as finished as it will ever be. Since then, the film has gone on a world tour, having been screened in Berlin and being scheduled for festivals worldwide. What makes these screenings of Dark Blood doubly poignant is that George Sluizer (80) is dying, suffering from an affliction which may finish him off on any given day. Nevertheless he tries... |
Posted: 26 Mar 2013 05:00 PM PDT Back again for a little home video round up, this time we're looking at the recent genre output of super-niche label, Twilight Time. Over the last couple of years this team has released a good number of films prized by fanatics and collectors alike in their customary limited editions of 3,000. The last few months have seen a trio of fantastic genre films come to Blu-ray for the first time, and I wanted to make you aware of what you're missing out on if you don't place your order quickly enough.Experiment in TerrorWhen I think of Blake Edwards, uncomfortably tense thrillers are not the first thing that come to mind, but before he was crowned a master of big screen comedy he was still finding... |

Will THE CANYONS Sell Internationally? Posted: 26 Mar 2013 11:00 AM PDT It may or may not be a complete disaster as a movie, but low-budget indie The Canyons has definitely gotten more than its fair share of publicity. For that, credit can be given to the cast, led by porn star James Deen and publicly troubled Lindsay Lohan, not to mention director Paul Schrader and writer Bret Easton Ellis. Rejections by Sundance and SXSW added to the tale. But IFC Films picked up U.S. rights last month, and now we'll find out if the world at large cares enough to pony up money to see it. Voltage Pictures has acquired international sales rights to the film, according to Screen Daily, and will offer it to buyers beginning in May at Cannes. The company, based in Los... |
Watch The First Teaser For THE WOLVERINE Posted: 26 Mar 2013 10:30 AM PDT While Hugh Jackman's first solo foray as everyone's favorite X-Man didn't exactly set the box office or critic's pens on fire expectations are considerably higher for the James Mangold directed second effort, titled simply The Wolverine. It draws from one of the most popular storylines for the character, for one thing - revolving around Logan's time in Japan - and the early imagery has been strong. And now we get to see those images in motion. The first teaser has turned up on MTV and for those who - like me - don't live in the USA and get cranky about geo-blocking on such things, we've included an embed of the new teaser below that should be viewable everywhere. What say you, Wolverine fans? Anyone or anything... |

Euro Beat: France Campaigns To 'Free John McTiernan,' Plus Abel Ferrara Finds His Anne Sinclair Posted: 26 Mar 2013 09:00 AM PDT Die Hard and Predator director John McTiernan has been ordered to begin a one year prison sentence by April 3 (eight days from now) ... but not if the French have anything to say about it. Citizens of the country famous for celebrating American genre directors like Sam Fuller and Robert Aldrich have now rallied behind one of the modern masters, hoping to drum up enough public support to make courts re-examine his prison sentence. A bit of background on how McTiernan got to this point: The prison sentence was ordered in 2010 after McTiernan pled guilty to lying to an FBI agent in response to a case against that the against Hollywood private eye Anthony Pellicano. The latter was a fixture in L.A., a... |
Kickstart This: Help Find Weng Weng, the Filipino Midget B-Movie Cult Hero Posted: 26 Mar 2013 08:30 AM PDT Australian filmmaker Andrew Leavold is on a quest. For the past 6 years and armed with a camera he's been on this quest, searching for Filipino cult movie superstar Weng Weng, and shooting a documentary along the way. Now, armed (literally) with a Weng Weng shoulder tattoo and 100 hours of footage and interviews - including what looks like a bizarre encounter with Imelda Marcos - Leavold is ready to cut all his footage down into a 90-minute feature documentary to bring the definitive story of Weng Weng to the world.Fittingly called The Search for Weng Weng, the doco needs the final funds to get over the line, and has started an appeal on Kickstarter (a name that martial arts star Weng Weng would surely... |

Trailer for NORIGAE Seeks Justice Posted: 26 Mar 2013 02:30 AM PDT April 18 will see the release of a new Korean social thriller that seeks to highlight the rampant abuse of women by figures of power and authority in Korea. Much like how 2011's Silenced or 2012's Unbowed took the courtroom genre as a vehicle to demonstrate certain ills of Korean society, Norigae will take aim at the entertainment industry's treatment of women through a court case.Inspired by the 2009 suicide of actress Jang Je-yeon, Norigae follows an investigative reporter who tries to unearth the truth behind an actress' death. The burly but very talented Ma Dong-seok (Nameless Gangster, Neighbors), whose mournful eyes are the ones staring at you on the left, takes on one of his first starring roles. I'm not familiar with director Choi... |

Wicked Trailer For ZANJEER/THOOFAN With Tollywood Golden Child Ram Charan! Posted: 25 Mar 2013 05:30 PM PDT Indian masala will never die!I've been a bit lax in posting new Indian films here recently, but, honestly, it's mostly because not much has moved me. That is, until now. I've been following the Zanjeer/Thoofan since it was announced. There are several reasons for this. First of all, the film is a remake of '70s Bollywood classic, Zanjeer, starring the archetypal "angry young man", Amitabh Bachchan in his ass-kicking prime. Secondly, the film is the Bollywood debut of one of Tollywood's biggest stars and scions, Ram Charan, son of Megastar Chiranjeevi. Cherry's second appearance on film was as the star of SS Rajamouli's (Eega) Magadheera a few years back and recently had a huge Telugu language hit on his hands with Naayak. Those two factors alone... |
