NAFF's IT Project Wants You! Submit Your Genre Film Today

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 04:00 AM PDT

The Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan), going into its 17th edition this summer, puts on a great show every year. Genre films are savored during the day while the smell of barbecued meats and the cacophony of karaoke stimulate the senses at night. It's not all smokey clothes and strained voices though as the Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF), which also takes place during PiFan, is the site of plenty of deal-making before the sun sets.NAFF's IT Project, the world's first exclusive project market for genre films, has sent out its call for submissions for what will be its 6th edition. Films such as Jeon Kyu-whan's The Weight and Yeun Sang-ho's searing animation King of Pigs, have purred to life during previous editions.The...

Adventures in Classic Korean Cinema: EARLY RAIN

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 03:00 AM PDT

Adventures in Classic Korean Cinema is a bi-weekly feature looking back at classic South Korean Cinema. The aftermath of World War II brought about a quick change in social values, which reevaluated the needs and lifestyles of youths around the world. In the US, James Dean and Elvis Presley captured the imagination of millions of young Americans in search of a new identity. A similar thing happened in Japan with the rapid modernization of a strict society that had recently undergone a shameful loss in the Pacific Theatre. Social roles were changing and up and coming directors such as Suzuki Seijun and Oshima Nagisa were taping into a youth culture of revolt that began to brew in the late 1950s. Likely inspired by these progressing cultures but also reeling from...

Watch Nick Cross' Trippy Animated Short PERIHELION

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 02:00 AM PDT

Canadian director Nick Cross (Yellow Cake, The Pig Farmer), who has a reputation for his bizarre yet visually intriguing animation, has taken a break on his solo independent feature film Black Sunrise to produce another animated short, Perihelion. To say it's quite a trip would be a gross understatement. Here's how he described it:Perihelion is a sort of animated tone poem. It is a short film that toes the line between narrative and non-narrative, essentially having no real beginning, middle or end. The idea being that you could start watching it at any point and it would (hopefully) have the same impact. Visually, I was heavily inspired by the work of a number of German painters from the early 20th century. Notably: Otto Dix, Richard Oelze, Ingrid...

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 12:30 AM PDT

Has it really been eight years? Wow. It feels like it was not too long ago Todd and I were sitting down in a local pub with festival director Adam Lopez as he described his dream of bringing a full-on genre festival to the city of Toronto. Seven zombie walks, one Summer-storm power outage, and temporary venue change later, the festival organizers are looking to once again gather Toronto's 'cinemaniacs' under the roof of the hallowed Bloor Hot Docs Cinema for nine nights of genre goodness from the festival circuit and around the world. Toronto After Dark announces Call for Horror, Sci-Fi, Action and Cult Film Entries!Toronto After Dark Film Festival has just announced its 8th Annual Call For Film Entries. ND/NF 2013 Review: JISEUL, A Mournful, Beautifully Photographed Depiction of a Historical Tragedy

Posted: 27 Mar 2013 05:00 PM PDT

This year's edition of New Directors/New Films is typically eclectic, with as many stylistic approaches as filmmakers employing them. But there are probably no films this year as visually stunning as Jiseul, O Muel's artful and truly original dramatization of a horrific historical episode that occurred on Jeju Island, South Korea, where the director himself hails from. O, whose background is in performance and visual art, has devoted his film career to depicting the life and culture of Jeju, with his actors speaking in the local dialect. In Jiseul, O's fourth feature, he turns his attention to the aftermath of what is known as the "4.3 Incident," when a demonstration commemorating Korean resistance to the Japanese occupation on April 3, 1948 was fired on by...

Full Trailer For Nakata's THE COMPLEX

Posted: 27 Mar 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Nakata Hideo brought the world the J-horror boom with the release of his 1998 classic Ringu. As the focal point of an entire movement the attention focused on Nakata has been intense and - with the exception of the even better Dark Water - the response has generally been mixed. Nakata has proven a restless sort, cycling through others styles and genres rather than being pinned down, but the results have been mixed, which is why so many are anticipating the arrival of his latest effort, The Complex.Nursing student Asuka (Atsuko Maeda) has just moved into an apartment complex with her parents and younger brother. On the first night in her new room, she is awoken by a strange scratching sound coming from the apartment...

Review: G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Kicks Way More Ass Than It Needs To

Posted: 27 Mar 2013 10:00 AM PDT

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is not the toy-line adaptation movie we deserve. A market that allows for studio execs to even bat around the idea of dropping more than $100 million dollars on a consumerist nostalgia cash-in based on a bunch of action figures deserves the laziest, most incoherent, aesthetically muddled movie that hundreds of millions of dollars can produce. Instead though, Jon M. Chu delivers an extremely well-directed, cheerfully dumb and occasionally dazzling spectacle of explosions, muscles and one-liners. It's a hell of a lot of fun on any big-dumb blockbuster terms, but downright incredible when you consider that we're talking about a movie where the protagonist is named Roadblock (Block for short). The plot-setup is a lot like the last Mission Impossible - The...

Washington D.C. Is A Terrible Place To Live. WHITE HOUSE DOWN Trailer

Posted: 27 Mar 2013 08:45 AM PDT

In another case of Armageddon VS Deep Impact, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter VS Lincoln, Hollywood has graciously decided that we the public need not one, but two films about terrorists attacking Washington D.C. head on and taking down the White House. The Die Hard-ish Olympus Has Fallen opened recently to relatively positive reviews, with our own Jason Gorber practically creaming in his pants over it, and the general feeling is that it's a successful action romp that doesn't take itself too seriously. Then we have White House Down, where uber-patriotic Roland Emmerich is at the helm dealing with what seems on the surface to be the exact same scenario. But my feeling is that it will have a much serious tone. Here we have Channing (The Neck)...

After the arrival of a twenty second tease yesterday the full trailer for James Mangold directed superhero flick The Wolverine has arrived, sporting two and a half minutes of mutant claw action. KICK-ASS Is the Hero In Name Only. International Trailer Throws The Spotlight On Hit Girl.

Posted: 27 Mar 2013 08:20 AM PDT

Sorry Kick-Ass. The movie may bear your name but you're being kicked to the side. If there was any doubt after the initial red band teaser, the new international trailer for Kick-Ass 2 makes it abundantly clear: This one will succeed or fail purely on the drawing power of Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl. Yeah, sure, Aaron Johnson is still in there and Jim Carrey looks to be having a blast with his part but this trailer is absolutely, completely about Moretz. So much so that they're not even bothering to include the villains at all. When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave.  With graduation looming and uncertain what to...
