Vikram's THAANDAVAM Trailer Promises A "Complete Entertainer," But ...

It's only been a couple of years since Ronnie Screwvala took his multimedia conglomerate, UTV Motion Pictures, into the south of India. UTV is the biggest studio in India, and in 2011, the controlling stake in the company's stock was purchased by The Walt Disney Corporation. This transition has really seemed to up the speed at which UTV seeks to take over all of Indian cinema, not just the Hindi film industry, on which they've had a very firm grip for the better part of a decade. In the service of that goal, they've released several big budget features with big South Indian stars including Arya (Naan Kadavul) in Vettai, Kamal Hassan in Unnaipol Oruvan, and Vikram in last year's breakout hit, Deiva Thirumagal. The...

International Chinese Film Festival Enlightens Melbourne

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 08:02 PM PDT

The burgeoning International Chinese Film Festival (formerly Sydney Chinese Film Festival) is still growing and facing teething problems but the opportunity to flourish in Australia is one that cannot be ignored. Luckily, in its fourth year the festival has expanded its reach yet again to include Melbourne in its competition and exhibitor film lineup, and festival director Lanwei Gong has certainly chosen some interesting and diverse picks to amuse, horrify and intrigue viewers both adept and new to mostly mainland Chinese films.Fresh from the gala opening at the Venice film festival and subsequently TIFF comes Hur Jin-ho's Dangerous Liaisons, boasting an impressive cast including Zhang Ziyi and Cecilia Cheung, and retelling the classic French tale in a period 1930's Shanghai setting. Oozing with sexuality and...

Fantastic Fest 2012 Review: BRING ME THE HEAD OF THE MACHINE GUN WOMAN is Sexy Violent Fun

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 07:15 PM PDT

There are few filmmakers who know how to create as much onscreen fun with as small of a budget as Chilean writer/director Ernesto Diaz Espinoza. With 70s cinematic sensibilities, funk-filled soundtracks, and always awesome action, Mirageman and Mandrill were fun-packed riffs on the superhero vigilante and suave assassin (respectively) subgenres. His latest, Bring Me the Head of the Machine Gun Woman is his take on guns-blazing bounty hunter exploitation films (he calls it LatinXploitation, or LXPL for short). Mix in a heavy dose of video game culture via a Grand Theft Auto mission motif and you have another big success from Espinoza and a film that is truly fantastic. Marking a big departure for the director, Espinoza has traded in the high kicks of action...

Fantastic Fest 2012 Review: COLD STEEL Shoots For Romance As Well As Action

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 06:08 PM PDT

David Wu, long-time editor of Hong Kong action auteur John Woo, returns to feature filmmaking with this spirited war-time thriller that supplants nationalistic breast-beating with action and romance to mostly positive effect. At the height of the Sino-Japanese War, small-town huntsman Mu Liangfeng (Peter Ho) is drawn into the conflict after saving a truckload of Nationalist troops from a Japanese sniper. Mu had previously rescued a US pilot from his crashed plane, who in turn showed him how to give his weapon the proper respect. Recognising this inherent discipline in Mu, army captain Mengzi (Tony Leung Ka Fai) recruits him into his elite sniper unit. As the invading Japanese forces flood south, and the Nationalist Army must rely on the help of underground Communist...

Books to be Scene: Tim Powers' HIDE ME AMONG THE GRAVES

"Christina reached behind her and lifted the chalice from the wall top and handed it to Maria. "Rest in peace, Uncle John," said Maria softly as she poured the wine over the dirt. "Please."...Christina glanced up quickly, for a deeper shadow had seemed to fall across them from only a yard away - and then it was gone, and the grass was rippling in waves away from the raw mound.Christina was reminded of having once at twilight walked through a field of tall grass and disturbed sleeping birds, who darted short distances away without appearing about the grass tops, so that her passage had seemed to cause ripples, as if she were wading through a pond instead of grass. She thought she caught a whiff of...

Reel Asian Sneaks a Few Titles. The One You Should Care About is COLD STEEL

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 10:02 AM PDT

Having its sweet 16th anniversary this year, Toronto's Reel Asian Film Festival continues to showcase cinema from from China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kashmir, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand; this also includes films from Canada and USA with an Asian bent. As it was last year, the festival will be presented in two parts: November 6-11 in Toronto and  November 16-17 in Richmond Hill (just outside the city).Having seen the lovely 35mm print of Cold Steel, anyone who loves classic Hong Kong melodrama would be advised to check out David Wu's film, a throwback to 1980s and 1990s John Woo classics (for which Wu served as editor), but also a humorous reaction to Woo's bombastic tendencies. It's a film that sneaks right up and charms its audience, including...

THE MUMMY Will Be Brought Back to Life by Len Wiseman. Oh, Boy!

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 09:18 AM PDT

Universal is working its way through its roster of classic monsters for 21st Century reboots, and now it's the turn of The Mummy. For this new-fangled version, Len Wiseman is being hired to direct, according to Deadline. Joe Spaihts is in process of writing the screenplay, which Wiseman described as "a darker twist on the material, a scarier version." The story will be set in the modern day. Universal wants the film for the summer 2014 blockbuster season. The 1932 original was directed by Karl Freund, who served as director of photography for Tod Browning's Dracula, and followed in the latter's footsteps as a static piece of work that doesn't hold up. Remaking the film in the late 1990s made sense, the franchise extended to...

And, in case you can't tell from the first still above, Knuts is a woman! Okay, okay -- it's not too earth-shattering considering that Bowie forged a good decade of his career partly by blurring gender lines. But get a load of this plot: "The main character of the film travels back in time to stop three lookalikes of David Bowie, at different times." Sold! The film was directed by Wim Reygaert and Stephen and David Dewaele, who collectively form DJ Souwax, who are already known for mixing music, art and animation.
