Manila-based production company Paper Boat Pictures is set to announce an innovative new marketing and storytelling campaign that will see their new film The Grave Bandits expand across a variety of formats between its world premiere at Metro Manila Film Festival next month and the film's on-demand video release in the spring of 2013.The Grave Bandits is a zombie horror comedy about a couple of ne'er-do-well grave robbers who flee an incensed mob of villagers to a remote island, only to be faced with the greater threat of an army of the undead, spawned by a mad scientist's tinkering with a contaminated meteorite. Paper Boat Pictures, founded by The Grave Bandits writer/director Tyrone Acierto and producer Vanessa Ulgado, has collaborated with Hong Kong-based production company, Haexagon...

Chevy Chase Quits COMMUNITY

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 07:45 PM PST

In what may be the biggest "well duh" moment to hit the television industry in the last few years (and so much so I'm liable to call it non-news) (and so much so that I didn't even almost post it), Chevy Chase has departed from the cast of NBC's Community. Reported by Deadline, Chase and the show's producers have come to what is being described as a "mutual agreement" for his exit. With only a few episodes left to roll in the show's 4th season, Chase looks to be leaving the Greendale campus just shy of the season finale in what one can assume will be a proper farewell to his character Pierce Hawthorne. It's been no secret that Chase has been unhappy in his...

Review: HITCHCOCK and Helen Mirren Make Alma Reville a Star

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 07:00 PM PST

Shamelessly shallow, Sacha Gervasi's brisk romantic trifle Hitchcock starts with a kernel of truth and blows it up into a bucketful of popcorn entertainment, albeit of the arthouse variety. Featuring a sterling inhabitation by Helen Mirren and a suggestive portrayal by Anthony Hopkins, the film never pretends to be more than it is: a chalk outline of a man's life. Hitchcock is at its best whenever Mirren and Hopkins share the screen. They carry a large amount of baggage with them, but it's barely perceptible as they each slip into their roles. Mirren has the easier task, since her character, based on the real-life screenwriter and producer Alma Reville, is much less known, while Hopkins must shoulder the impossible burden of playing director Alfred Hitchcock,...

Review: DUST UP Kicks Up B-Movie Craziness and Laughs

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 06:00 PM PST

With unhinged moxie and violent humor to spare, the low budget lark Dust Up is a surprise blast. For a movie so boyishly bent on Ozsploitation-esque no-man's land mutilation and death, the film undeniably sparks with life and the sheer joy of handcrafted filmmaking. I had nearly as much fun watching it as the cast and crew obviously did making it. The film isn't for everyone, but one look at the movie's cool spaghetti Western/exploitation poster art, and ideal audience members will know whether to consider lining up for this or not. Dust Up plays as if Robert Rodriguez met Joss Whedon in the desert on three-wheelers (running on fumes) with no cash but plenty of enthusiasm. What goes down is this: A loud-mouthed, hard...

STAR WARS Silly Season Part 2: We May Have More Writers!

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 05:00 PM PST

Since last we posted about all things Jedi related, the rumour mills have been churning at full force. While we're usually ones to take things with giant grains of salt around here about such rumblings in the Force, there's a couple stories that hit in the last couple days that seem to pass the smell test.First, Deadline.com spilled the beans yesterday that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are being "courted" (a Knightly term if there ever was one) to scribe Episodes XIII and IX. Kasdan's certainly a famous name for any fan of Lucasfilm, having written the minor Arthouse trifles The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and Raiders of the Lost Ark.Kinberg's less of a household name, but he did write the first...

Meet Mr Jesus In Trailer For Thai Thriller COUNTDOWN

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 02:31 PM PST

Responsible for a string of the finest chillers in the Thai wave, production house GTH - producers of Shutter, Alone, Dorm, Phobia and others - have largely moved away from the dark stuff in recent years with the company focusing more on comedies, particularly of the romantic kind. But, perhaps spurred to a degree by the success of last year's Laddaland they're getting back to the grisly ground that really made their name internationally.Coming soon from the company is Countdown, the story of three Thai university students studying in New York City who opt for a little chemical stimulation while counting down (natch) the final moments of New Years Eve. What they don't realize is that along with their pot they're also getting psychotic dealer...

The RESOLUTION Boys Catch A Glimpse Of Their Future

So. I'm in Estonia. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead - aka the guys who made Resolution - are also in Estonia. We haven't seen each other yet but they're clearly already bracing for the separation anxiety that will arrive when they depart this fine Baltic state. Yes, it's another festival video from these two, check it out below for a glimpse into their future....

Morbido 2012: Sunday, Bloody Sunday

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 01:30 PM PST

I was seated in the courtyard of my hotel, the day after Morbido drew to a close, waiting for the bus ride back to Mexico City. It was an amazing weekend of cinema, culture and carnal delights. And I had some time to reflect on the final day, Sunday. We international guests would stick around for lunch together, along with Richard Stanley's press agent/demon guardian, a small doll representing this guardian complete with it's own black cloak. So imagine if you will Mr. Stanley walking around the streets of Patzcuaro with this doll in the cradle of his palm. Then we spent the afternoon basking in the sun doing what we do best, talk about cinema. We would not leave for Mexico City until...

EXCLUSIVE: News on the Upcoming Stage Adaptation of Miyazaki Hayao's Anime Classic PRINCESS MONONOKE!

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 12:30 PM PST

When Whole Hog Theatre announced the news about their new project being the world's first stage adaptation of Miyazaki Hayao's universally admired anime classic Princess Mononoke back in July, the response was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Words quickly spread across the World Wide Web, and seemingly everyone, including even diehard fans of the original, was excited about the upcoming show. Then tickets went on sale, and in just 3 days, the show was sold out. Details about the production have been rather sketchy; except for certain facts such as the dates of the performance being the 2nd to 6th April 2013, the venue being the New Diorama Theatre in London, and that the stage production won't be an all-singing all-dancing musical (as reported by some websites) but will...

Review: DEADFALL Flaunts Eric Bana's Badassery, But Not Much Else

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PST

Deadfall really hits the ground running. Addison (Eric Bana) and his sister Liza (Olivia Wilde) are celebrating her first casino heist. En route to the Canadian border, freedom is temporarily put on hold when their vehicle hits a deer, sending it high into the air, where it learns all about the laws of gravity and slow motion in a display that would make Zack Snyder very proud. The two survive, but a state trooper happens to drive by and calls in the wreckage before Addison shoots him dead. Now these two are stuck in a big snowstorm with only one option: run. Because she's pure at heart, Addison doesn't want the chance of them getting caught together and decides the two should split up and meet...

Review: RUST AND BONE Stays Too Grounded for its Own Good

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 10:00 AM PST

The narrative of Rust and Bone reminded me of an old-school pulpy melodrama from the 50s or 60s, the type of film where most of the narrative momentum comes not so much from cause and effect, but from traumatic stuff happening every ten minutes and changing the course of the plot. At their best, these films are funny (both intentionally and unintentionally), thrilling, and in the end, surprisingly moving. Max Ophuls' pulpy Hollywood work like Caught and A Reckless Moment both come to mind as perhaps some of the best examples of this type of storytelling. It's almost the exact opposite of the finely crafted narrative momentum in Jacques Audiard's previous film, A Prophet, which wouldn't be a problem, except that Audiard directs with almost...

Hey, Toronto! Lock Up Your Children's Toys, CHILD'S PLAY Hits The Big Screen Saturday!

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 08:00 AM PST

Hey, Toronto! All your favorite slasher villains are coming to the big screen, projected on glorious 35mm, as part of the Twitch presented Birth Of A Villain series at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Keeping things rolling this Saturday, it's the evil doll Chucky in Child's Play! The one-two punch of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and John Carpenter's megahit Halloween in the 1970s put a new face to American horror movies. While previously the genre had its share of tortured, sympathetic anti-heroes (the Frankenstein Monster, the Wolf Man), this new breed of monster was a hero because of his villainy -- and the more gleefully he set about his gruesome work, the better. Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Chucky, Pinhead -- the...

Review: RISE OF THE GUARDIANS Tries to Make Jack Frost a Thing

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 06:00 AM PST

A story in which mythical figures like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy team up to protect children from the Boogeyman sounds like a sure bet, and William Joyce's Guardians of Childhood book series has evidently found plenty of material in that concept. But the movie version, going by the franchise-launching title Rise of the Guardians, runs out of steam with shocking speed. Energetic animation and a handful of amusing character touches help, but they can't compensate for the paper-thin story and muddled messages. There are four official Guardians, called and ordained by the Man in the Moon (who is in charge for some reason) to watch over the children of the world. They are Nicholas St. North (voice of Alec...

Seattle Film Fest to Become Hotbed for African Film

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 06:00 AM PST

There's no shortage of festivals in the world and with an increasing array of diverse programs and sidebars to choose from, covering an enormous breadth of cinema, it is a little surprising that the bod of work of an entire continent is still largely unsung on the global film stage. Well the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) aims to put an end to that. Yesterday, SIFF announced that it has been awarded a significant grant from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in support of a three-year program designed to highlight the "diverse and burgeoning hotbed of filmmaking activity emerging across the continent of Africa." It's high time that a major festival devoted some real attention to this neglected area of international...
