Wong Kar Wai's THE GRANDMASTERS Delayed Again, Placates Us With Posters Posted: 27 Nov 2012 01:20 AM PST When you've been waiting five years, what's another few weeks between friends? The frustrating yet wholly unsurprising news has broken that Wong Kar Wai's martial arts epic The Grandmasters has been pushed back yet again, from its 18 December release date to 8 January 2013 in both Hong Kong and China. While Sil-Metropole and Bona Film Group have issued no official statement as to why the film has been delayed, the rumours floating around the Internet have suggested that Wong has left the editing suite and is shooting new footage. In an effort to keep desperate fans from breaking down their doors and wrestling the film from them immediately, the film's distributors have issued four new character posters, which you can see below. The Grandmasters is... |
Get Your Bloody First Look At Horror Anthology S-VHS Posted: 26 Nov 2012 03:15 PM PST It was just under a year ago that horror anthology V/H/S caused a stir at Sundance, the high profile project leaving audiences buzzing. At least the ones who didn't faint. And now the producers behind that project are at it again with a new anthology titled S-VHS. As previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the directors this time out include Gareth Evans (The Raid) co-directing with Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre); Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project) co-directing with his long time producer Greg Hale; Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun); Adam Wingard (You're Next) and writer Simon Barrett making his directorial debut. And now Twitch is proud to exclusively present the very first official image from the project. The blood soaked affair above comes from the... |
Watch Stellar Animated Short LITTLE THEATRES: HOMAGE TO THE MINERAL OF CABBAGE Posted: 26 Nov 2012 08:00 AM PST Cabbage as a mineral? Well, it's no stranger than cabbage as the subject of an animated short film, really. And yet that's what we have with Stephanie Dudley's stop motion short Little Theatres: Homage To The Mineral Of Cabbage.Adapted from a poem by Erin Moure, we first caught wind of this one when it was selected at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival and now the complete short is available online. Check it below.... |
Blu-ray Review: SAFTEY NOT GUARANTEED, But Then, What Is? Posted: 26 Nov 2012 07:00 AM PST I'm more or less with the prevailing opinion around these parts when it comes to director Colin Trevorrow's time travel comedy debut Safety Not Guaranteed, inasmuch as I found it inoffensive, and fitfully amusing largely because of lead actress Aubrey Plaza, the cute-mean Parks and Recreation and Funny People actress. It is a pleasure to see the actress turning inside out that sardonic persona she's leaned on for most of her onscreen career, and if there's one definable pleasure, it's seeing her sweetness and vulnerability for the first time. The broadly drawn but still personable characters will pull you in, but with this kind of "is the hero crazy or isn't he" premise, there's really only so far you can go, particularly in the indie... |
Tamil Master Bala Returns To Big Screen Drama With PARADESI. We Have The First Trailer. Posted: 26 Nov 2012 06:00 AM PST You may not recognize his name, but Tamil director Bala made something of an international splash back in 2009 with his film Naan Kadavul (I am God). The film was featured on these very pages and played at Fantastic Fest 2010, so Bala is not an entirely unknown quantity to the genre film world. Still, not many Tamil filmmakers make it out of the region in general. Bala's last film was a comedy titled Avan Ivan that tanked at the box office and left critics cold, however, Paradesi looks to be taking a much firmer stance, and so far it looks pretty damned good. Here are a few words about the film from a website which claims to be official:Director Bala has his own ways... |
Blu-ray Review: The Non-Hysterical Comedy of HYSTERIA Posted: 26 Nov 2012 05:00 AM PST Back in May, Jason Gorber argued that the charm of director Tanya Wexler's "vibrator comedy" Hysteria was its audience-friendly accessibility. I'd argue that in smoothing down any rough edges, in telling such a safe, easy, and worse bland story about, women's rights, manual stimulation of the clitoris in the pursuit of psychological health, the invention of the vibrator, and psedoscience vs. actual science is what makes Hysteria such an interminably dull movie to sit through. Far from charming or fun, I found the movie a chore, a constant assault of whimsy and pluck with its back-of-the-class giggling about middle class ladies in the 1880s getting some manual attention from a medical professional to cure the vague but commonly diagnosed set of conditions under the umbrella... |
Review: MISFITS S4E05 (Or, Finn Meets His Real Dad) Posted: 26 Nov 2012 04:00 AM PST While I'm feeling largely positive about the fourth series of Misfits - especially the two episodes before this one - I think that the character of Finn just isn't working. He has a really irritating manner and is devoid of charisma or anything that the audience can identify with. This episode's main plot is about Finn tracking down his real father, and while there are parts of it that work, I was left feeling more disappointed than I was with the other episode focussed around Finn (that one where he locked up his girlfriend).Finn discovers who his real father is but he also learns that he is suffering from cancer and is not long for this world. This is a story with substance, but the... |
