Review: THE MARATHON Takes Its Characters And Runs With Them

Posted: 01 Nov 2012 02:00 PM PDT

(You don't need to train for six months to watch this film...) There sure is no shortage of films about a group of underdogs who participate in a seemingly impossible sports event and manage to get farther than expected. It's such a standard feel-good plotline that it no longer even is important whether the persons we're supposed to root for win or lose, as both endings have been done plenty of times before. Diederick Koopal's first feature film De Marathon is no exception storywise, so that is not where any gold is to be found. Instead, I wanted to see it because of some of the actors and writers involved. On top of that it takes place in the city I have lived in for...

Joe Carnahan To Direct Patrick Wilson in Actioner STRETCH

Posted: 01 Nov 2012 12:51 PM PDT

With the American Film Market opening today in LA, news of fresh deals and projects are coming to light up our gloomy autumn weekend. The first big 'un being that The Gray director Joe Carnahan will be taking the reins on low-budget actioner Stretch, which has Patrick Wilson attached to star. And no, this has nothing to do with the toy, thank god. The folks at IM Global, who had a stake in the recent Dredd 3D and Richard Linklater's upcoming Before Midnight, will produce along with Blumehouse productions (Paranormal Activity franchise). While no further details on story and release are available at this time, Carnahan and Wilson teaming up feels mighty solid. As a director Carnahan has only gained favor within the industry and...

Review: WRECK-IT RALPH Is a Warp Zone to the Next Level

Posted: 01 Nov 2012 12:30 PM PDT

Whichever Disney employee said, "Let's do Toy Story but with video game characters," I hope he or she got a big fat raise, if only to compensate for the seething jealousy coming from co-workers kicking themselves for not thinking of it first. It's the kind of forehead-smackingly obvious concept that often results in a cash-grab -- I think sometimes the makers of kids' movies take the expression "It practically writes itself!" too literally -- but Wreck-It Ralph is a bubbly, buoyant treat with near-Pixar levels of heart. The conceit is that the computer-generated people and creatures that populate video games have lives of their own apart from what happens on the screen. After hours, they travel through the extension cords and power strips to...

Review: THIS MUST BE THE PLACE Mixes Comedy, Absurdity, and Human Drama

Posted: 01 Nov 2012 12:01 PM PDT

For some people, This Must Be The Place will be the new Sean Penn flick, for others it will be the new Paolo Sorrentino film. The difference may seem futile, but based on this simple distinction you might say that roughly one group is going to appreciate the film for what it is, while the other group will end up being bored to death. I'm in the believers group and thoroughly enjoyed Sorrentino's latest effort, but it's definitely not a film for everyone. Ever since I discovered Sorrentino's Le Conseguenze dell'Amore, I've been following the man with heightened enthusiasm. Il Divo was a small disappointment, but with This Must Be The Place Sorrentino proves that Le Conseguenze dell'Amore was more than just a lucky hit....

Review: JACK & DIANE, A Dark Romance With Little Bite

Posted: 01 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PDT

The practice of transposing horror elements for the use of visual metaphors and nightmares in a film which is more or less a drama isn't a new thing. We at Twitch come across films that aren't quite full on horror yet dip a toe into the bloody pool nearly every festival we travel to. Now how about an already minimalist drama dipping a toe in? The choice of how a filmmaker commits to these tropes, visual tricks and panache is where their film will rise or fall. Unfortunately Bradley Rust Gray's coming-of-age romance falls hard, and quite early on too, making it a bit of a slog to get through. It's even tougher to take because the misguided use of the horror isn't really what brings...

Opening: FLIGHT is Well-Acted But Shameless Awards Bait

Posted: 01 Nov 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Denzel Washington is currently on a full-bore publicity blitz for Robert Zemeckis' Flight, in which he stars as an airline pilot who makes a miraculous landing, thus saving the lives of all on board -- only for it to be revealed that he had alcohol in his system. Washington's performance has generated talk of awards consideration, but what about the film itself? Flight debuted recently at the New York Film Festival, where our own Christopher Bourne saw it and filed a review: Flight is Zemeckis's first live-action feature in more than a decade -- his last was 2000's Cast Away -- and is crowned by a riveting and nuanced performance by Denzel Washington as the troubled character at its center. Much like NYFF opener Life...

Review: THE BAY Redefines Found Footage Horror

Posted: 01 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PDT

The Bay may very well be the definitive found footage horror film, joining the likes of Chronicle as one of the very few films in this sub-genre that gets it absolutely right. When it was announced that Barry Levinson would be debuting a new film as part of the Midnight Madness slate at the Toronto International Film Festival, and that it would be a found footage horror piece about infected water, I admit I wasn't expecting very much. It'd be easy to dismiss this as both a cash-in on the fad of the handicam (well, iPhone) film, and a mere vanity piece for an established director. My cynicism was entirely misguided. Levinson's film proves something pretty unequivocally -- any conceit, any style, be it found...

AFM2012: Raven Banner And 108 Media Acquire International Sales Of RESOLUTION

Posted: 31 Oct 2012 11:30 PM PDT

You are going to have to talk with Raven Banner Entertainment and 108 Media if you want the festival darling Resolution in your home country. International sales rights were acquired in a deal negotiated by XYZ Films - yes, the same XYZ Films our lord and master Todd works with - who acted on the filmmakers' behalf. This is a good fit for Raven Banner as they have always sought out genre fare that sets itself above the box office weekend slash and grab studio projects. Tribeca Films has the North American rights and is planning a simultaneous release of the film theatrically and on numerous VOD platforms in early 2013....
