BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO Arrives To Baffle Your Senses On UK Blu-Ray and DVD

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 01:30 AM PST

Arriving on a wave of critical acclaim, Peter Strickland's Berberian Sound Studio hits UK DVD and Blu-ray at the end of the year. A homage of sorts to 70s Italian horror, it stars Toby Jones as Gilderoy, a mild-mannered Brit who takes a job as a sound engineer on "The Equestrian Vortex", a potentially questionable piece of Italian art and/or exploitation cinema. Events become increasingly sinister, and then surreal,  as Gilderoy becomes troubled by his part in the production.  As the film made noise on the festival circuit, a duo of positive reviews on Twitch  saw Kwenton Bellette  conclude that the film was "an absolutely dark treat for the unchallenged mind" whilst Kurt's positive take called it "a rare breed of creeping horror and certainly not for...

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 09:31 PM PST

The long-delayed, somewhat-maligned but much-anticipated adaptation of The Great Gatsby by Baz 'Glitter' Luhrmann is gearing up for a release in May 2013 and as if to replace it's original Christmas-time bow into cinemas, Warner Bros has released two delicious character posters. One features Joel Edgerton as East Egg dwelling playboy Tom Buchanan looking all suave and impassive, and the other features Isla Fisher looking like a pretty incredible Myrtle Wilson, not how I pictured her from the novel. Check them out below! Click 'em to embiggen 'em....

THE MASTER Takes Tops Honors With Toronto Film Critics!

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 09:01 PM PST

The Toronto Film Critics Association blessed Paul Thomas Anderson's film The Master with four awards this year. And three very different Canadian films have the chance to win the Rogers Best Canadian Film Award: Bestiaire, directed by Denis Côté; Goon, directed by Michael Dowse, and Stories We Tell, directed by Sarah Polley. That makes it two documentaries and a hockey movie that tapped into the Canadian psyche like a Maple tree at the end of Winter. Other titles and acting talent familiar to Twitch readers will also receive awards at the January 8th gala. Ricky Gervais In Talks To Star In Next MUPPETS Movie

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 06:00 PM PST

Sweet puppet justice may be just around the corner for British comedian and actor Ricky Gervais. Gervais filmed a cameo for the 2011 film The Muppets but it never made the final cut. Now Gervais finds himself in negotiations to fill the lead role, opposite Kermit, Piggy and Fozzie, in the follow-up film. It only seems right that a familiar face to audiences from both sides of the pond take the lead. Gervais' roles in The Office, Extras, numerous cameos and notorious outings as host of the Golden Globes certainly make him no stranger to the viewing public. Nor will his addition make or break the film because we all know we do not go to a Muppets movie for the humans. No slight against Gervais...

The Original Django, Franco Nero, Wants Back In The Saddle With DJANGO LIVES!

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 05:30 PM PST

Twitch has learned that the original Django, Franco Nero, has sent a letter of interest to star in a new Django film by two producers behind the western The Scarlett Worm, the world's first 'abortion western'. Mike Malloy and Eric Zaldivar are currently working on the script and securing the rights to the second sequel to the 1966 spaghetti western Django. If all goes well then the original Django will ride again!  No doubt this has been spurred on by the impending success of Quentin Tarentino's upcoming film this is still very good news. ORIGINAL 'DJANGO' ACTOR FRANCO NERO ATTACHED TO NEW WESTERNEric Zaldivar and Mike Malloy, two producers of the offbeat 2012 Western The Scarlet Worm, have received a Letter of Interest from original Django star Franco...

ADOLF Has Left His Bunker And Needs Your Money!

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 03:30 PM PST

I'm not up to date on my European-based irreverent humor but if anyone seemed liked a good target for toilet humor comedy it would be Hitler. And lo and behold German comic book artist, Walter Moers, wants to bring another of his creations, Adolf, die Nazisau, to the big screen. Walter Moers... has decided to dedicate a feature film to his character of Adolf, the Nazi pig (Adolf, die Nazisau). In 2005, the latter starred in a video titled Ich Hock In Meinem Bonker ("I'm crouching in my bunker") that became a hit as soon as it was published on YouTube. The same ridiculous accent and toilet humour are now to feature in Adolf - Der Film (lit. "Adolf - The film"), according to the film project's initial...

JFF Review: DREAMS FOR SALE Has Lingering Thoughts On Humanity

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 02:00 PM PST

I caught Dreams for Sale as part of the fantastic lineup of the Japanese Film Festival in Melbourne (and other places in Australia). I feel compelled to write about it as it has stayed with me since viewing it.There is a spectre haunting Japan. Miwa Nishikawa's tragic and foreboding Dreams for Sale begins with this invisible force, affecting the lives of seemingly unrelated people in distressing ways before settling on a busy scene in a restaurant; a stable business co-owned by a young idealistic couple. Moments later, through sheer misfortune and human error the restaurant is decimated by an accidental fire; their reputation in ruins, their dreams up in smoke.Propelled by extreme stress and cynicism, they concoct a strange plan to rebuild their shattered finances;...

Review: DEXTER S7E12, SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER (Or, A Strong Conclusion To An Inconsistent And Frustrating Season)

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 01:23 PM PST

For those keeping track of such things, yes. You are correct. Twitch gave a miss to reviewing Dexter for the past couple weeks because, quite frankly, after all the truncated storylines and soap opera diversions and struggles to maintain any sort of momentum whatsoever, I just couldn't be bothered. It's holiday season and I've got kids and shopping to do and my time was significantly better spent elsewhere. Or at least that's what I thought and that general impression was only confirmed upon catching up on those previous two episodes over the weekend, both of which had their moments but also showed off all of the weaknesses that have plagued the writing thus far this season. And it's too bad, really, because the finale was reasonably...

Tomm Moore's SONG OF THE SEA Launches Principal Production In January

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 01:00 PM PST

It's been a little while coming but Tomm Moore's The Song Of The Sea - the latest from the director of Oscar nominated animated feature The Secret Of Kells - is up and running. The voice tracks have been laid down by the likes of Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, Pat Shortt, Jon Kenny, David Rawle, and Lisa Hannigan and principal production on the actual animation begins in January.Moore, in my estimation, is an outright genius and The Secret Of Kells an utterly fabulous bit of work. For a taste of what is coming check out the test reel below....

Dutch Thriller APP Wants You To Fear (And Use) Your Phone

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 11:00 AM PST

While theaters such as the Alamo Drafthouse are gaining both notoriety in some sectors and love in others by taking a hardline stance against the use of cellular phones in their theaters, Dutch director Bobby Boermans is going the opposite direction with his latest feature, APP. For not only does the film revolve around a young woman and a mysterious app on her phone but it is also designed to interact directly with theater audiences through their phones as well, in the theater, as the movie is screening. In the thriller APP, Anna (Hannah Hoekstra), a young student, gets caught up in her own virtual world. She is addicted to apps, social media and her smartphone. One day Anna discovers a mysterious new app on her...

Things Get Grim In The Latest Teaser For STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 10:33 AM PST

Anchored by a serious talking to from Bruce Greenwood's Admiral Pike to a brash and reckless Captain Kirk, the latest teaser trailer for J.J. Abrams' return to the Trek universe is perhaps a tad too self-serious, but boy, oh, boy is Benedict Cumberbatch a touchstone of gravitas in an already epic and somber tease. What ever villain he's playing there's no doubt it'll be fun to watch him bring the hurt to Chris Pine and the crew of the Enterprise.   Watch the trailer over at Apple, and let us know your thoughts in the comments.Set for release on May 16th and 17th in most corners of the globe, Star Trek Into Darkness also stars Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban,...

Jackie Chan To Star In EXPENDABLES 3

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 10:27 AM PST

Jackie Chan is expendable. Or at least he will be soon. Chan dropped word that he will star in the upcoming Expendables 3 at a recent press conference for Chinese Zodiac in Kuala Lumpur saying:Sly had invited me to be in Expendables 2 but I was too busy filming CZ12 and couldn't make a commitment to the film. But he did extend his invitation to the third movie, which I agreed on the condition that I will be appearing as more than just a minor role with a few scenes.Chan went on to say that he hoped there would be some sort of buddy comedy element to his part and the script is reportedly being reworked now to take full advantage of Chan's involvement....

Love, Dignity, and Death: Michael Haneke Talks AMOUR

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 10:00 AM PST

Austrian film director Michael Haneke took home the coveted Palme d'Or at Cannes for the second time after his The White Ribbon in 2009 and swept the year-end European film awards with his austere, devastating film Amour. I got a chance to attend a roundtable interview with the director at this year's New York Film Festival. As the interview unfolded in the Executive Room at the Trump International Hotel, where myself and six other journalists were served with 'Donald Trump approved bottled water,' my expectations were met -- Haneke outright avoided many pointed questions we asked and when he did answer, they were very concise and to the point. But also, there was a lot of laughter to be found in the room. This mild...

Third Window Films Gives Twitch A Peek Into A Great 2013. Tsukamoto, Miike, Kurosawa, Nakamura, & More!

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 09:30 AM PST

Our good friends at one of the world's finest DVD distribution labels, Third Window Films, have given us an early look at their 2013 schedule, and it looks awesome!Several of these titles are films we've already previewed for TWF in past months, but there are some titles that I'm very happy to share with fans for the first time today! Rather than blather on about it myself, TWF head honcho Adam Torel gave me a fantastic rundown of the titles on which he's been working very hard so I'm going to let him take it away:After a very turbulent 2012 in which we spent the first half of the year trying to recover from the Riots which saw all our stock burnt down in the...

CinemaOne Review: Emmanuel dela Cruz's SLUMBER PARTY is Pleasurable Yet Disconcerting

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 09:00 AM PST

Emmanuel dela Cruz's Slumber Party is a film of undeniable charms. It revels in color. It delights in diversity. It sustains with mainstreamed queer wit, the type that makes use of self-referential humor for much of the laughter earned. The brand of comedy is of course a staple in the Philippines, where there is an abundance of gay entertainers who mine their experiences with intolerance for everybody's humor. Fortunately, Slumber Party does not limit itself to the stereotypical inanity of its more commercial kin. It attempts to offer the mainstream it seduces with its approachable wit and comedy a slice of homosexual reality in the country. Perhaps Dela Cruz's most masterful stroke here is to cast popular straight actors as his film's tri-beki, the trio...

Review: Though It Walks a Fine Line CONFESSION OF MURDER Hits the Mark

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 08:00 AM PST

The sound of torrential rain beating down during a pitch black night can be heard along with the heavy footfalls of boots stamping on the wet ground. The atmosphere is pregnant with a sense of unease; menace and frustration linger in the air. A weary and despondent detective chases after a despicable man: a monster with the blood of young women on his hands. But the lawman's pursuit will prove fruitless, as this faceless ghost will vanish into thin air and into the forgotten recesses of history. Such a passage could easily describe any number of narratives that have cropped up in all kinds of mediums across the world. As far as Korean cinema is concerned, it quickly brings to mind a handful of powerful...

TOM YUM GOONG 2 Marks The End Of The No Wire, No CGI Era For Tony Jaa

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 07:30 AM PST

Get ready for something different, Tony Jaa fans. Having built his early notoriety at least partially on the promise of no wires and no CGI enhancement in the action and stunt sequences of his previous films Jaa and director Prachya Pinkaew are utilizing both for the upcoming Tom Yum Goong 2.Though a rarity in the work of action choreographer Panna Rittikrai, he has shown a willingness to dip into both areas when the action calls for it. Mercury Man and Dynamite Warrior both made extensive use of both wire and CGI work, for example, and even the much more raw Born To Fight includes one notable CGI gag. This is a first for Jaa, however, one necessitated by some of the 3D gags in the...

Review: MISFITS S4E08 (Or, An Uneven Series Ends With An Uneven Finale)

Posted: 17 Dec 2012 06:30 AM PST

All things considered, there is probably just a bit too much going on in the finale of Misfits' fourth series. It wouldn't be an issue if everything focussed to a thematic point, but it's a bit muddled and spends more of its time setting up for the next series than it does concluding this one. As with last week's episode, there are things that work and there are things that don't. Because Rudy and his relationship with Nadine are the driving force of the plot, though, I'd probably say that this ends up being a satisfying and entertaining episode overall.I was already worried about Alex becoming a dull character, and this episode confirmed that. We really don't know enough about him to get invested in...
