Blu-ray Review: WU DANG (Well Go USA)

China loves epics. If there's anything that China does unusually well, it's throw thousands of people in a field and film them killing each other. What China is less known for is smaller action adventure films. That is usually the terrain of their southern brethren in Hong Kong. Patrick Leung's (Twins Effect II, Beyond Hypothermia) Wu Dang is a little action adventure film with a spiritual twist. I've read several lukewarm to cold reactions to the film, but I have to say I don't feel at all like I wasted my 101 precious minutes. The story is remarkably contained, especially for a Chinese film. There is a martial arts tournament every five hundred years at the Taoist temple on holy Wu Dang mountain. When an adventurer...

Watch The Trailer For SciFi Short NOON

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 02:00 PM PST

While the creation of short films as pitch reels for proposed features is commonplace these days, upcoming short Noon takes things a step further. More than just a pitch, the short is actually a complete scene from within an already completed feature script to (hopefully) be directed by Star Trek 2, Men In Black 3 and Thor art director Kasra Farahani.Noon the teaser sets up the world's unique premise and introduces our protagonist, Gray, a coyote numbed to the cruelty of the world and his part in it. We watch Gray struggle to salvage what humanity still exists within him when profit is pitted against morality. The teaser looks quite solid, take a look below....

NYC News Flash! HOUSE Director Obayashi Nobuhiko Makes A Rare Trip To The City

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 01:30 PM PST

A bit of a news flash for our bi-monthly NYC Happenings here. Our good pal at Subway Cinema, Marc Walkow has clued us in that the legendary Japanese filmmaker (most notably for House) Obayashi Nobuhiko will be in town this week for several film screenings and in-the-works screenings. This is partially coinciding with MoMA's Japanese New Wave series which we just posted about this, where OB has several films playing this weekend, but also in relation to a screening of Obayahsi's early short films at Anthology Film Archives this Sunday, December 9th. Obayashi will be at Anthology for this screening and what is sure to be a lively, in-depth discussion afterwards. Walkow and company are also hard at work getting a screening for House in...

CHRONICLE Star Dane DeHaan Is Harry Osborne in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 01:15 PM PST

The Amazinger Spider-Man has a new cast member with director Marc Webb tweeting that Chronicle star Dane DeHaan has joined the cast to play Harry Osborne. Osborne is a key part of the larger Spider-Man mythology but with Jamie Foxx already on board to play Elektro it appears safe to assume that there won't be any Goblin action on screen in these latest films just yet. Beyond filling a major part in the film DeHaan also bridges the age gap between the actors playing major characters, DeHaan dropping right between Andrew Garfield and Shalene Woodley - four years younger than the former and four older than the latter - with all three playing characters who are meant to be pretty much the same age. That...

Does The New WARM BODIES Trailer Show There's Still Life In Zombie Comedies?

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 01:00 PM PST

In his relatively short filmmaking career, Jonathan Levine has tried his hand at a few different genres already, and with films such as All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, The Wackness and 50/50 under his belt, it's safe to say he is on the right track. His next venture, however, sees him tackle the already rather tired sub-sub-genre of the zombie romantic comedy. There are enough zombie movies around these days that they threaten to bite into the brains of every other movie around and turn the entire industry into the shuffling undead. Even zombie comedies have become an all-too-common commodity, and yet, they keep on coming. The new trailer for Warm Bodies, starring Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) and Teresa Palmer (Wish You Were Here),...

The GAME OF THRONES Cast And Crew Chat Up The New Season

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 12:30 PM PST

No, it's not a trailer and, no, it doesn't include any actual footage from the upcoming season, but a lengthy behind the scenes featurette has arrived for the third season of Game Of Thrones featuring the key cast and crew talking about what's in store while showing off some locations and glimpses of production b-roll. And if you, like me, feel like the March arrival of the upcoming season is very far away indeed, then this at least gives you a little something to hold on to. Check it out below....

Viking Warriors Drop The HAMMER OF THE GODS In First Trailer

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 12:00 PM PST

the Vikings are coming and they're bringing their hammers and axes with them. It may not be pretty but Farren Blackburn's debut feature packs in familiar faces from Game Of Thrones and Twilight along with an awful lot of blood letting to create what promises to be every bit as entertaining as it is violent.Set in Viking Britain in 871 AD, Hammer of the Gods is a visceral, intense tale set in a world whose only language is violence. A young Viking warrior, Steinar (Charlie Bewley), is sent by his father the king on a quest to find his estranged brother, who was banished from the kingdom many years before. Steinar's epic journey across terrifyingly hostile territory gradually sees him emerge as the man his...

NSFW Extended Trailer for CRAZY HORSE: FEU in 3D!

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 09:30 AM PST

After catching Frederick Wiseman's fascinating expose into the infamous Paris burlesque club on the festival circuit earlier this year, I had to admit that while Crazy Horse was a rivetting and revealing peek behind the velvet curtain, what I really wanted was more of the fantastic nude dance numbers. And not solely because I'm a dirty old perv, they were incredibly well lit, shot, scored and choreographed. If anybody else felt the same way, then fear not, as our prayers have been answered. Crazy Horse: Feu dispenses with the backstage documentary, and is instead 80 minutes of gorgeous, talented lovelies strutting their stuff in a series of fantastically worked routines. The performances are broken up by a lengthy interview with choreographer Christian Louboutin about his influences and...

Review: BOARDWALK EMPIRE S3E12, MARGATE SANDS (Or, Things Come To A Satisfactorily Bloody Conclusion)

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 09:15 AM PST

It should have been longer. Yes, it's a criticism that is also somewhat praise in that wanting more is always a good thing, but after a full season build up to the inevitable, bloody confrontation that caps the third season of Boardwalk Empire budget and time constraints left director Tim Van Patten resorting to montage and the briefest of nods directed at otherwise key characters. It works well enough, yes, and Van Patten spends his resources wisely - i.e. focusing tight on Nucky Thompson - but turning Al Capone loose with a full license to wreak whatever havoc he may care to and then reducing his screen time to little more than a couple insults slung at Chalky White ... well, let's just say that...

Sundance Unveils More Images From Calvin Reeder's THE RAMBLER

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 08:30 AM PST

One of the more exciting announcements from the Sundance Film Festival last week was the news that The Rambler, Calvin Reeder's feature-length version of his short film that took the festival circuit by storm, had been selected for the Park City at Midnight program.Part of the reason this is so exciting is because the film was produced by XYZ Films, in conjunction with Brooklyn Reptyle and AKA Pictures. XYZ is of course the company that our esteemed founder Todd Brown is a part of, and which executive produced Indonesian action smash The Raid. So you know this is gonna be awesome.Starring Dermot Mulroney, The Rambler was shot this year around Roswell in New Mexico. Here's the synopsis:After being released from prison, a man known as...

Review: MISFITS S4E06 (Or, A Golf Club-Wielding Rabbit Causes Mayhem)

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 08:00 AM PST

For a show that is able to make the most unusual of stories somehow work, Misfits hasn't really ventured into the crazier territory for a while. That all changes with the latest episode, though, which is easily one of the most bizarre instalments of the show. In the sixth episode of the series (yes, that means there are only two left), we see the characters go to a house party that gets completely out of hand when a suit-wearing, golf club-swinging killer rabbit is revealed to be roaming the halls.Eventually we learn that the host of the party has a power that makes his drug-induced hallucinations real, and that's why the murderous rabbit exists. Additionally, the gang end up affected by another power that displays...

First Images For Sundance Selected SHOPPING

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 07:00 AM PST

Warp Films are undoubtedly on a roll. In the past three years they've given us Kill List, Four Lions and Berberian Sound Studio. The production company's antipodean arm, based in Melbourne Australia, has also quickly stepped up to the plate, producing last year's blistering masterpiece Snowtown. Now they seem to have delivered again, with their sophomore production - the Kiwi film Shopping - selected for World Dramatic Competition at Sundance 2013.Written and directed by Mark Albiston and Louis Sutherland, Shopping is set in New Zealand in 1981. Seduced by a charismatic career criminal, teenager Willie must choose where his loyalty lies - with a family of shoplifters or his own blood. Review: Erik Matti's RIGODON Tackles A Sensational Subject With Careful Realism

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 06:30 AM PST

Erik Matti's Rigodon, unlike the many infidelity films that have plagued local theaters in the Philippines, eschews glamour for grit. Its sex scenes do not have the luscious lighting or the saccharine scoring of the various romantic sequences of its more audience-friendly kin. Instead, the sex is sweaty, raunchy, awkward, and set in either the most ordinary or uncomfortable of locations. Still reeling from a failed relationship, Sarah (Yam Concepcion) is desperate for a boyfriend who would both please her and her overbearing father. She meets Riki (John James Uy), a reality show contestant who can never seem to convert his erstwhile exposure to bankable fame, in a party. The two hit it off, developing a relationship that sates both Sarah's needs and Riki's desire...
