One of our most anticipated titles at Sundance 2013 is The Captain, the short film collaboration between directors Nash Edgerton and Spencer Susser - who have made some of the most memorable short films in recent years: Lucky, Spider, Bear and I Love Sarah Jane.Like Nash did with Bear, in which he cast fellow director Warwick Thornton in a small but crucial role, not to mention his "Must Be Santa" music video for Bob Dylan, which had directors Glendyn Ivin and Luke Doolan prancing around a Christmas party, The Captain stars another director chum. This time Eagle vs Shark and Boy director Taika Waititi is the star of the show. Here's the synopsis:A man wakes up with a hangover, only to discover the consequences of...

Watch The First OBLIVION Trailer

After the soft sputter of Tron: Legacy - a movie that made its money but left most underwhelmed - director Joseph Kosinski has rather a lot riding on Oblivion. After working as a hired gun on Tron and being the subject of a marketing campaign that did its damndest to push him as a visionary this one is Kosinksi's chance to prove he can actually wed a story and characters people care about to all of those pretty pictures. And if he doesn't do it here he may not get another chance to try again, at least not on such a grand scale.Hyperbole? I don't really think so. Despite turning Disney a profit, the studio was unenthused about how that film turned out enough that...

Weinberg Reviews IN OUR NATURE, a Low-Key Character Film That Rings True

Sometimes you're just in the mood for a low-budget, four-character indie film in which a few flawed but very relatable folks deal with their low-key stresses, concerns, and issues in a way that, at the very least, rings true and, in the best cases, offers a viewer something that feels personal and familiar. The low-key but smoothly accessible In Our Nature is definitely one of those films. First-time writer/director Brian Savelson is interested in little more than presenting a story about a strained relationship between a father and his grown son, and how it begins to heal with some integral help from two very smart women. Seth is a popular musician who brings his longtime girlfriend to the rarely-used family cabin. Their fun is interrupted...

Review: KHILADI 786 Is Akshay Kumar At His Goofy Best

Posted: 08 Dec 2012 04:52 AM PST

Akshay Kumar is back with Khiladi 786, his eighth Khiladi (The Player) movie over the past 20-odd years. It's been a dozen years since he released a film with that title, but he has far from abandoned the character he perfected in the '90s. The last few years have seen Kumar playing the same over-the-top hero character in masala film after masala film to typically very good box office results. In fact, whenever Kumar tries to stray from the path he built for himself with offbeat films like 8x10 Tasveer, Blue, or Joker, audiences tend to stay away in droves. In a way, even though this film doesn't have an original bone in its body, I'm kind of glad that he has accepted his role...
