Japanese Teaser for STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS Delivers More Bangs!

In this current trend of releasing teasers for trailers of upcoming movies, Paramount has released the first real taste of its big budget sci-fi sequel Star Trek: Into Darkness. Now, even though it runs over a minute, this is apparently not the official trailer. That will be released on 17 December, apparently in front of The Hobbit. What we got here is just an announcement video about the forthcoming teaser to the forthcoming movie. Whichever way you look at it, this new video appears to be a perfectly formed trailer, featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and the rest of the Enterprise crew looking all tense & angsty (the title is "Into Darkness" after all) but more importantly, we get the always awesome and in...

Howdy there, folks. Today I come to you as Twitch's correspondent for all things Slamdance 2013. For me personally, going to the fest is a big deal as I've reviewed for Twitch, and truly fallen in love with, several Slamdance selected titles from years past. That is why it is with great pleasure that I get to share with you today the first slate of titles from this year's festival -- it's the feature film narrative and documentary...

Rogue Soldier On The Run In Poland's MANHUNT

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 02:00 PM PST

Yes, it's a bit of a Polish themed day on Twitch today but it's hard to argue with the array of intriguing efforts coming out of that country lately. And the third Polish offering on the Twitch docket today is Marcin Krzyształowicz's Manhunt. The premise is a familiar one - a rogue soldier being hunted down in connection with the deaths of his own squad - which means it all comes down to execution. And the trailer is very promising, offering up a solid blend of grit, drama and action. Take a look below....

Poland Delivers A Most Unusual Heist Film With 80 MILLION

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 01:00 PM PST

Ah, the heist film. We've all seen a ton of them and half of the joy is seeing how people will manipulate the very familiar formula to keep things feeling fresh. But every now and then someone finds a completely different approach into the genre and Waldemar Krzystek's 80 Million is very definitely one of those cases. Forget about your typical gang of charming criminals pulling off the job, these people aren't criminals at all. At least not by any contemporary standards. No, what we have here is a period piece tracking political activists pulling off a job against the ruling Communist forces. The film was pitched like this at the Gdynia Film Festival:Lower Silesia, the autumn of 1981. After a series of provocations by...

African Folk Tales Come To Life In KWAKU ANANSE

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 12:29 PM PST

If you - like me - first became aware of African trickster spirit Ananse through Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys, here's your chance for something a little bit more authentic.Akosua Adoma Owusu's Ghanaian short film Kwaku Ananse comes supported by the Focus Features Africa First program, a program which supports the best and brightest African talents. Owusu certainly seems to qualify on that front, the story blending traditional folk tales with contemporary social reality and the camera work looking simply gorgeous. Here's how the creator describes it:"Kwaku Ananse" is an intensely personal project which draws upon the rich mythology of Ghana. The short film combines semi-autobiographical elements with the tale of Kwaku Ananse, a trickster in West African stories who appears as both spider and man....

Doing The Shopping Will Never Be The Same After Polish Thriller SUPERMARKET

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 12:00 PM PST

Half the battle in creating a compelling thriller is finding - or creating - a reason to be afraid of something recognizable from daily life. And the more mundane the object of terror the more unsettling the film can be. It's something that writer-director Maciej Żak clearly understands and he's found one of the most every day settings possible for his upcoming thriller Supermarket. Here's how the film was described at a recent appearance in Poland's Gdynia Film Festival:Returning home on New Year's Eve the Wareckis, an average married couple, stop at a store. The husband goes to buy champagne. The wife stays in the car and waits for him. Hours go by and he does not return. Nobody can find him. A series of seemingly...

First Images From Vietnamese Action CHO LON Promise Massive Scale Gang Violence

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 11:00 AM PST

Stepping it up a notch? The team behind Vietnamese action hits The Rebel and Clash are doing a whole lot more than that if the first images from the set of their upcoming Cho Lon - previously known as Chinatown - are to be believed. Johnny Tri Nguyen stars and handles the action choreography on this one with Charlie Nguyen directing and Jimmy Pham Nghiem producing. In the heart of Saigon, there's a place where promises are still written in blood.Cho Lon is a modern day gangster epic with 'epic' being the operative word ... the cast is huge and we can clearly expect some mass fighting sequences. And when your on set, behind the scenes shots look as astoundingly good as these ones do,...

DAEMONIUM Chapter Two Arrives Friday, Watch A Trailer Now

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 10:00 AM PST

Director Pablo Pares has long been a favorite on the Latin American genre circuit, his Plaga Zombie, 100% Lucha and Zona Mutante winning fans with their scrappy energy and infectious love for the genre. And while Pares latest effort, Daemonium, may be a low budget affair he's not letting the financial resources limit his ambitions, creating a series of short films that will later stitch together into a feature that fuses action, horror and scifi tropes. The story of Daemoniun is set in an alternative universe, where technology and magic co-exist like humans and demons do too. Thought as a series of 5 chapters,in Daemonium we see Razor`s evolution ( who is going to be the visible face of a dystopian government that only seeks for...

Hey, Toronto! Break Out Your Latex Pants, Clive Barker's HELLRAISER Hits The Big Screen This Saturday!

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 08:00 AM PST

Hey, Toronto! All your favorite slasher villains are coming to the big screen, projected on glorious 35mm, as part of the Twitch presented Birth Of A Villain series at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Keeping things rolling this Saturday, things get kinky with Clive Barker's Hellraiser! The one-two punch of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and John Carpenter's megahit Halloween in the 1970s put a new face to American horror movies. While previously the genre had its share of tortured, sympathetic anti-heroes (the Frankenstein Monster, the Wolf Man), this new breed of monster was a hero because of his villainy -- and the more gleefully he set about his gruesome work, the better. Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Chucky, Pinhead -- the names...

Koga Mitsuki Is The BUSHIDO MAN

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 08:00 AM PST

It seems that, for the past decade or so, any discussion of Japanese martial arts films has revolved around the skills of Sakaguchi Tak. And there's good reason for that, Sakaguchi standing as by far the most prominent fighter within those years, starring in a host of popular titles. But Sakaguchi is far from the only game in town and a man whose skills are just as impressive is Koga Mitsuki.Since first appearing in a bit part in Godzilla: Tokyo SOS - he piloted the Mechagodzilla - Koga has been a reliable force both in big budget films (Shinobi, Ichi, Tomorrow's Joe) and more cult titles (Cromartie High, Hard Revenge Milly, Kunoichi) and he has reunited with his Hard Revenge Milly director Tsujimoto Takanori for...

Review: THE HOBBIT - AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY Exceeds (Lowered) Expectations

Posted: 05 Dec 2012 06:00 AM PST

After the seventh or eighth denouement during the conclusion of Return of the King, fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy were content to have the director have his own way. The seeming interminability of the thing had been earned, most of us felt, forming a kind of victory lap after having come so far with the project despite such ridiculously long odds. We thought we (and he) were done with Middle Earth, and that PJ had earned his extended goodbye.Sure, now the success of the entire project seems to have been inevitable, but I assure you that sitting in the theatre a decade or so back for Fellowship of the Ring, I was not alone being filled with dread. How could...
