Slamdance 2013 EXCLUSIVE: Pass It On In The Trailer For I WANT TO BE AN AMERICAN

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 05:30 PM PST

Mentioned earlier tonight in my post on the next round of Slamdance titles, the inaugural edition of a new project by the festival called Slam Collective, features seven festival alumni from five continents that have joined forces to play a cinematic version of the surrealist parlor game Exquisite Corpse. A fascinating idea if there ever was one. Need a little more on what this all means? Well... Building on footage given to them by the previous filmmaker each participant makes a short film that links back and forth to their collaborators. I Want To Be An American, a 70 minute experimental documentary is the end result. Premiering at Slamdance in Park City, Utah, and online at slamcollective.com, on January 21st, we now present to you...

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 04:03 PM PST

Our next round of Slamdance news out of Park City, Utah (via Los Angeles) has arrived and it's quite an interesting sidebar that's a-brewing. Most notable is the first ever Slam Collective feature documentary made by seven Slamdance alumni from five continents. Entitled I Want To Be An American, this innovative project is made up of the seven filmmakers' short films, constructed and presented in the style of the surrealist parlor game Exquisite Corpse -- Color me intrigued then. The film will premiere at the festival in Park City on January 21st, and will also be available online for folks to watch... anywhere... so huzzah! Per the press release, read on to find out all the details on Slam Collective and all the special screenings...

With Michael Bay's PAIN AND GAIN Getting Back To Basics Means Muscles, Bikinis And Perhaps A Bit Of Gunfire

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 02:30 PM PST

Much has been made of Michael Bay's move away from the big budget, CGI driven spectacle of the Transformers movies for something smaller and more intimate with the Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson starring Pain And Gain. But what many people forgot is that when looking over Bay's filmography the picture that stands out as the most small and the most intimate to date is Bad Boys. And that's very much the Bay that is back here. From acclaimed director Michael Bay comes "Pain & Gain," a new action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie. Based on the unbelievable true story of three personal trainers in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American Dream, get caught up in a criminal enterprise that...

VIDEO: LOOPER Interactive Live Chat with Writer/Director Rian Johnson

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 02:01 PM PST

Here's the video of the Looper interactive live chat with writer/director Rian Johnson that I moderated on Monday at the Sony lot. This method was very new for me since it was all online and I'm used to doing this in front of a live audience. I'm quite neurotic and kept thinking I would crash and burn with so many of his fans in the chatroom at the same time, ready to fire their questions away, or technology would work against me in some way and there would be an undesirable amount of awkward moments. But, the great people at Spreecast sat close and guided me through their platform. Despite a few brief periods of dropped audio, it worked out nicely. I had a blast moderating,...

Mamat Khalid Breaks Out The Big Gun In Official HANTU KAK LIMA 2 Trailer

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 10:00 AM PST

While the previous promo for Mamat Khalid's Hantu Kak Lima 2: Husin, Mon & Jin Pakai Toncit broke out the big hair the official trailer is breaking out the big gun. For the uninitiated, let me explain.Khalid is one of Malaysia's most popular filmmakers, a multi-talent threat whose early credits include writing an absolutely gorgeous period drama - still one of the most expensive films the nation has ever produced - while both writing and directing slick, and also gorgeous, throwback to 1950s cult cinema When The Full Moon Rises. But it wasn't one of these glossy productions that made Khalid's name. Nope. His big break came with scrappy, low budget horror comedy Zombi Kampung Pisang, or, Zombies From Banana Village. A very regional film,...

Ronnie Yu's SAVING GENERAL YANG Trailer Soaks The Ground With Blood

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 09:00 AM PST

One thing is very clear. General Yang had better be one very, very important man to justify the amount of carnage being carried out in his name in Ronnie Yu's Saving General Yang. One of Hong Kong's finest, Yu makes his return to the director's chair for the first time since 2006 Jet Li starrer Fearless. And he is back with a massive scale action spectacle. The story of the Yang's has been eulogized for hundreds of years in the Chinese society. It details the exploits of the Yang military family, recounting the unflinching loyalty of the Yang family heirs. The plot places focus on how the seven sons of the Yang family held hands in the rescue of their father...Ekin Cheng, Chun Wu, Vic Chou,...

Hey, Toronto! Get Beastly With THE HOWLING On The Big Screen This Saturday!

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 08:30 AM PST

Hey, Toronto! All your favorite slasher villains are coming to the big screen, projected on glorious 35mm, as part of the Twitch presented Birth Of A Villain series at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Keeping things rolling this Saturday, things get hairy with Joe Dante's The Howling! The one-two punch of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and John Carpenter's megahit Halloween in the 1970s put a new face to American horror movies. While previously the genre had its share of tortured, sympathetic anti-heroes (the Frankenstein Monster, the Wolf Man), this new breed of monster was a hero because of his villainy -- and the more gleefully he set about his gruesome work, the better. Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Chucky, Pinhead -- the...

Coscarelli's JOHN DIES AT THE END Gets A Red Band Trailer

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 08:00 AM PST

What's better than a movie revolving around the end of the world and rampant drug use? A trailer for a movie revolving around the end of the world and rampant drug use that includes breasts. Yes, Don Coscarelli's John Dies At The End has got itself a new trailer, this one of the red band variety. And that means Paul Giamatti swearing, masturbation jokes and lots of breasts. It's a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. On the street they call it Soy Sauce, and users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and David, a pair of...

Lots Of Wide Angle Ben Affleck, Must Be The TO THE WONDER Trailer

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 06:50 AM PST

What has Terrence Malick wrought in his recent period of unprecedented productivity? While it seems like The Tree Of Life follow up To The Wonder was in progress ages ago the fact is that's only because Malick has been so busy on other projects since wrapping this one and following its festival run To The Wonder is just gearing up for its first public releases. And that means a trailer.Ben Affleck stars with Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko as a man reconnecting with his roots - and an old flame - after his marriage falls apart. Critical reception to To The Wonder may not have been as rhapsodic as the response to The Tree Of Life but it is certainly not without its fans and,...

Opening: ZERO DARK THIRTY Lights an Uneasy Fire in the Soul and Conscience

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 06:00 AM PST

Instantly acclaimed as one of the year's best films when it began screening in advance of its opening several weeks ago, Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty has also been sparking controversy all over the U.S. due to its treatment -- or alleged treatment -- of torture, and how that may have led directly to the locating (and killing) of Osama bin Laden. As I observed in my review, however: Lean, muscular, and shorn of sentimentality, Zero Dark Thirty is consistently absorbing, even as it makes the case that morally-repugnant torture was absolutely necessary in order to discover the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden. Note that the film, written by Mark Boal and directed by Kathryn Bigelow with riveting precision, does not argue in favor of...

Wong Kar Wai's THE GRANDMASTER to Open Berlinale, and Hopefully Play Sooner in Hong Kong

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 05:30 AM PST

After five years of waiting and numerous delays, it looks like Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmaster (which is officially no longer plural) is finally going to be unleashed on the  public. After it's Hong Kong release date was pushed back from December 18 to January 8, the film is apparently now set to open just two days later on January 10. Moreover, it has just been announced as the opening film for the Berlin Film Festival. I doubt even an internationally-respected director like Wong has the clout to pull a festival's opening night film for tinkering, so at the absolute latest, we'll get some reactions to the film by mid-February. Once again, this is Wong Kar Wai's take on the legendary martial arts master Yip...

Masters of Cinema Tease ONIBABA Blu-ray Release With Superb Original Trailer

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 05:00 AM PST

Responsible for many of the best Blu-ray releases of 2012 in the UK, Eureka's connoiseur label, Masters of Cinema is set to continue its winning streak into the new year with the release of Shindo Kineto's demented classic, Onibaba on 25 February. Arguably the most well-known film from Shindo, who sadly passed away earlier this year at the grand old age of 100, Onibaba is the terrifying story of a young woman left stranded in a remote hut with her mother in law, eking out a meagre living by preying on passing samurai. From its stark black and white photography, to its demonic imagery, Onibaba remains one of the best Japanese horror films ever made, nearly 50 years after its release. In order to whet our...
