If there is one film that most of us here at Twitch are dying to see this year it is Guillermo Del Toro's ode to Japanese Kaiju cinema and anime series Evangelion, Pacific Rim.A trailer from the Qualcomm CES (Consumer Electronics Show)  presentation has just surfaced featuring some new footage of mayhem, dubstep-ish sound effects and... Good Golly does it look good. This film can't come quick enough....

For Your Consideration: BATTLESHIP for Best Picture of 2012

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 07:50 PM PST

We live in a time when winking, snarky, sardonic Cinema has become the norm, when things like subtext and subterfuge gloss over what are more often than not simply action movies gone wrong. We've seen pixels fighting pixels, groups of Avengers not really avenging anything, a rising Dark Knight that some found risible, all while more earnest, straightforward films that go for awesome over allegory are chided as being foolish things. No film better exemplified "going for awesome" in 2012 than Battleship. Its conceit was simple, its execution often breathtaking. For its level of success was in its very name, like some platonic ideal that through description we achieve ascription. A film of any other name would not be as sweet, in this work...

Watch WWI Short Film COWARD Right Now

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 04:30 PM PST

Proving that big, impressive things can come in "smaller" packages, David Roddham's short film Coward is a lovingly detailed throwback to the sentimental epics of yesteryear and a sobering snapshot of "the last great war". And you can watch it online, right now.I first got wind of Roddham's short as they were wrapping up production a year back, and was able to share my two cents on the finished film just a few months ago. Here's a snippet of those thoughts: There's certainly a Spielbergian deftness to Roddham's direction. The film has sentiment and heart to spare, but is never saccharine, and understands and honors its increasingly dark and tragic subject matter. All in all Coward is a solid throwback to classic studio storytelling on...

Dieter Laser Re-Joins THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 3

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 02:00 PM PST

It's bigger. It's leggier. It's more disgusting than ever. And it's got its leading man back.Tom Six's The Human Centipede 3 ran into a significant problem a while back when lead actor Dieter Laser - who plays Dr Heiter in the first two films - walked away from the production. It was an acrimonious affair, one that resulted in a legal battle resolved now with Laser and Six patching up their differences and Laser rejoining the film. But not, interestingly enough, as Dr Heiter. No, word is that while Laser and HC2 star Laurence R Harvey will play the leads of HC3 neither will reprise their roles from the previous films. And, if we're being honest, the five hundred person human centipede promised for this...

New RESOLUTION One Sheet Emphasizes Cabin In the Woods

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 01:30 PM PST

There are a number of us in these parts who fell in love with Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's indie mind-bender Resolution on the festival circuit. Regular Twitch readers will recall the festival promo video series which they clearly had a lot of fun making (and we had a lot of fun posting). With the film set for VOD release Jan 23 and an L.A. only theatrical release Jan 25, Tribeca Films have commissioned this swanky new poster which emphasizes the three key elements of the film: Pals in a Cabin, supernatural whatthefuckery, and media (the books, tapes and 8mm film kind, not nosy reporters).Michael (Peter Cilella) is committed to getting his best friend Chris (Vinny Curran) to sober up and get his life back on...

J "Jai Ho!" Hurtado's Top Ten Indian Films Of 2012

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 11:00 AM PST

As India's film industries celebrate their 100th year, it is only fitting that the country has made its strongest showing on the international film circuit in ages. Following an extremely strong contingent at Cannes and a City to City spotlight on Mumbai at TIFF, India's position in the global film community is stronger than it has ever been, and with good reason.2011 was something of a flaccid year in terms of Indian filmmaking. Scattered independent success stories and largely unoriginal blockbusters were really all there was to get excited about. However, 2012 has mopped the floor with its predecessor and shown a massive strength that I was not expecting. This year has provided plenty of excellent choices for a top ten list, and in fact...

Review: Tears and Flames - Christmas Mayhem in THE TOWER

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST

Following the biggest ever year for Korean cinema, it is perhaps fitting that the very last work to be released in 2012 was a spectacle-driven disaster film highlighting the industry's technical proficiency. Likened to previous blockbuster failures such as Sector 7 (2011), My Way (2011) and this year's R2B: Return to Base, there was a danger that The Tower could have made for a sour note to conclude Korean cinema's fortuitous year. Any such qualms were quickly dispelled however as the film registered the industry's all time second-biggest opening day and is well on its way to an enormous finish. It's Christmas Eve and the brand new Tower Sky complex, a brilliant pair of skyscrapers soaring over Seoul's skyline, is busily preparing for its glitzy...

J Hurtado's Top Ten Movie Memories Of 2012

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 09:03 AM PST

This is it, ladies and gentlemen. 450+ films later, it is time to decide on a top ten of the year, not an easy task I assure you. I've seen a lot of great films this year, and that's made it difficult to whittle this list down to the arbitrarily agreed upon ten, however, I complied.I try to mention this every year, but my top ten list is usually very different from everyone else's, not only my Twitch colleagues, but pretty much everyone else out there. I suspect that the main reason for that is the fact that I have little interest in compiling a list of the "best" films of the year. Quality is a very subjective metric when it comes to art. Therefore,...

TV Review: MY LITTLE MONSTER

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 08:00 AM PST

At first glance you have to admit My Little Monster hardly seems that different. It's yet another animated show with a cast of high school kids wondering What It All Means, and another odd couple in the lead. The bookworm who's never met any boy who could turn her head falls for the class rebel, and a raft of familiar faces get drawn into their orbit, sparking their own mini-character arcs and gentle epiphanies. Watch a single episode and you realise this is a well-worn groove playing pretty much the exact song you'd expect.Yet with so much Japanese animation desperate to show you how self-aware it is, piling on the knowing meta-humour, the shrill mugging to camera, sticking the most one-dimensional tropes up on a...

Todd Picks His Favorites From North America And Around The Globe, Five He Hated, And Talent To Watch

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 07:00 AM PST

Yes, yes. It's another year end list. It seems that every year that comes and goes I debate whether I should do one of these at all and every year I decide that yes, I should, and then I end up surprising myself by what actually stands out when I go back over the previous year's viewing. There are always titles that I expected to make the list that don't, always titles that I didn't expect to make the list that do and, in the end, it generally provides a bit of a snapshot of where both the film world and my head were at during the year.A few notes on process before getting into the meat of things. First, this is a completely arbitrary...
