Sundance 2013 Review: EMANUEL AND THE TRUTH ABOUT FISHES Swims to the Surface Posted: 21 Jan 2013 08:24 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/emanuel_poster_300-thumb-200x200-36382.jpg) Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes is writer/director Francesca Gregorini's sophomore film, following 2009's Tanner Hall. The story follows Emanuel (Kaya Scodelario), a precocious high school girl who carries on her shoulders the self-placed burden of her mother's childbirth death. For Emanuel, life is a struggle to find herself, despite feeling like she doesn't belong due to her unjust welcome into life. As Emanuel's world view gets darker and more melancholic, a mysterious woman named Linda (Jessica Biel) moves in next door. She is a single mother who needs help with her baby and she and Emanuel quickly become close - almost mother/daughter close. This worries Emanuel's father, Dennis (Alfred Molina) and Janice (Frances O'Connor); Emanuel's trying-too-hard step-mom. However, as the story unfolds, the relationship... Mark Leonard Winter Shines In Majestic ONE EYED GIRL Teaser Posted: 21 Jan 2013 07:30 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2012/11/MLWinter-thumb-200x200-34972.jpg) While majestic might not be the best way to describe a doomsday cult thriller which, in part, seems to feature some shocking bloodshed, it's a great word to illustrate the first teaser for One Eyed Girl, the debut feature from cinematographer Nick Matthews.Featuring what looks to be another tense, fraught performance by Mark Leonard Winter - who is finally making his much-deserved debut here as leading man - One Eyed Girl is the story of a psychiatrist (Winter) who follows a mysterious teenage girl named Grace into a Doomsday cult.Check out the first teaser from the film below.... 70s Rewind: THE OUTFIT Showcases the Real Parker Posted: 21 Jan 2013 06:00 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/the-outfit-dvd-wb-thumb-200x200-36378.jpg) In Parker, which opens wide on Friday, January 25, Jason Statham will be the latest in a long line of actors to play a professional criminal originally created by Donald E. Westlake in 1962. Westlake, aged 27 or 28, had become self-supporting as a writer by publishing one mystery novel per year (in hardcover) for publisher Random House, but he wanted to write more than one book a year, and came up with the idea of writing paperback originals targeted specifically at the male audience. He decided to write in language that was "stripped down and bleak," and used the pseudonym Richard Stark to remind himself of what he was attempting to do. ("Richard" was in honor of Richard Widmark, one of his personal heroes.)... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] ![](http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TwitchEverything/~4/1FetvoZAyDY) |
Sundance 2013 First Impression: THE WAY, WAY BACK is Heavy on Laughs Posted: 21 Jan 2013 04:30 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/sundance13_waywayback-thumb-200x200-36377.jpg) Nat Faxon and Jim Rash may not exactly be household names, but chances are you would recognize their faces from the myriad of comic roles they've played over the years. They made a splash on the filmmaker scene two years ago when they took home the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for Alexander Payne's The Descendants. There's nothing like winning an Oscar to get your career really moving and their next produced screenplay, The Way, Way Back sees the duo taking over the director's reigns as well. What results is a coming-of-age comedy that excels in the comedy realm and falls a little flat in the coming-of-age parts. Star Liam James just seems a bit too cool and too old to play an awkward 14-year-old... First Teaser For Korean MMA Actioner FIST OF LEGEND Posted: 21 Jan 2013 04:00 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/fistoflegend-thumb-200x200-36373.jpg) Following the baseball drama GLove, director Kang Woo-suk of the Public Enemy trilogy has set his sights on another sport, mixed-martial arts, in Fist of Legend (no relationship to the Jet Li film of the same name). Based on a webcomic series written by Lee Jong-kyoo and illustrated by Lee Yoon-gyun, it centers on a group of middle-aged men who were once hailed as legends during their teenage years, participating in a fight tournament to win the grand prize money. The cast include Hwang Jung-min (New World), Lee Yo-won (May 18), Yoo Jun-sang (R2B: Return To Base) and Yoon Je-moon (Doomsday Book).A moment of bad luck derailed Deok-kyu's Olympic dreams and led him and his friends to jail. Slamdance 2013 Review: HE'S WAY MORE FAMOUS THAN YOU Is Excessive, Obnoxious And Hilarious Posted: 21 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/halley_feiffer_famous_still-thumb-200x200-36376.jpg) He's Way More Famous Than You is a zany bit of fame-whore lambasting, with co-writer and star Halley Feiffer fearlessly taking aim at just about everything under the Hollywood/celebrity sun, most notably herself, and more importantly her appearance in "Noah Baumbach's cinematic masterpiece" The Squid And The Whale. As an alcoholic narcissistic, nightmare inversion (explosion?) of herself she squeals across the screen like a manic pixie banshee girl, dead set on making her own movie, which will, in her mind revitalize her in-the-toilet career. To do this, she finagles the help of her brother Ryan (co-writer Ryan Spahn) and eventually, with much begging and whining down the pipeline, his partner Michael Urie aka the gay guy from Ugly Betty, aka the guy who is gonna... Sundance 2013 Review: FRUITVALE Is The Real Deal Posted: 21 Jan 2013 02:00 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/Fruitvale_still-thumb-200x200-36375.jpg) When I first heard that a film based on the shooting of Fruitvale resident Oscar Grant had been made and was coming to Sundance, it sent up an explosion of hopes and concerns for me. You see, I have a very close connection with the East Oakland neighborhood, having grown up there myself, kicking around those streets from my pre-teen years into my early 20's. Was this going to be an angry diatribe against The Man (in this case, a team of BART police, BART being the Bay Area Rapid Transit, our version of the subway), and a one dimensional rendering of "Da' Hood" like so many other films have been?Thankfully, no. First and foremost, even before the legal and potentially racial issue Fruitvale ultimately... Sundance 2013 First Impression: UPSTREAM COLOR is Filled with Big, Confusing Ideas Posted: 21 Jan 2013 01:11 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/sundance13_upstreamcolor-thumb-200x200-36367.jpg) It was nine long years ago that Shane Carruth wowed Sundance audiences and took home the Grand Jury prize for his innovative and minimalist time travel tale Primer. Rumors of a follow-up have circulated for years, but the announcement that Upstream Color was done and would premiere at this year's Sundance Fest was met with an avalanche of excitement. Quite possibly the most anticipated film at the festival, Upstream Color is just as bold as Primer, though far less accessible. Like Primer, this is the kind of film that is better to go into without knowing much. Unlike Primer, it might not be possible to give away much at all. This is an experience movie with many big confusing ideas. Some will likely find... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] ![](http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TwitchEverything/~4/-uUjlXybdN4) |
Slamdance 2013 Review: JOY DE V. - Bright Lights, Big City & The Lost Soul Posted: 21 Jan 2013 12:15 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/joy_de_v_still-thumb-200x200-36201.jpg) Nadia Szold's feature debut Joy de V. charts the speed of dreams; the layers and shapes, patterns and cadence of a fever dream. Of a man met with madness that may be of his own doing, by the flick of his lighter's flame, or that of the forces beyond him, out to get him, out to find him, and to leave him.Roman is a small time con artist in New York. He supports his pregnant wife Joy with a long-term con of faking mental illness, which results in disability checks. Gorgeous First Poster For Jang Joon-hwan's HWAYI Posted: 21 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/Hwayi-thumb-200x200-36354.jpg) It has been a full decade now since Korean director Jang Joon-hwan made his feature debut with cult favorite Save The Green Planet. Jang has been quiet in the years since, turning out one notable short amidst a string of false starts on other feature projects but despite the intensely loyal cult around Green Planet the film's financial failure at the Korean box office has stymied his chances of making a second feature until now.Jang has just begun principal photography on Hwayi, the story of a teenaged boy raised by five criminals to become the perfect killer. Yeo Jin-goo stars along with Cho Jin-woong, Jang Hyun-sung, Kim Sung-kyun and Park Hae-joon. And while no stills have been released as of yet there is now a... First Teaser For Nakata's THE COMPLEX Heralds A Return To Form Posted: 21 Jan 2013 11:00 AM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/TheComplexPoster-thumb-200x200-36353.jpg) Having triggered a wave of Japanese horror films with 1998's Ringu it seems like director Nakata Hideo needed a change. You can't blame him, really. After that initial success and later - and, in my opinion, superior - effort Dark Water, Nakata had pretty much done what he wanted to do with hair-ghosts and freaky children and went in search of greener pastures. The problem, however, is that the past decade has not been particularly kind to Nakata and while he has certainly kept working steadily he has never again even remotely approached the sort of critical acclaim that his key works received on their release and fans have been left to wonder if he's simply lost the spark.Well, Nakata is about to premiere his... Review: Armando Lao's AD IGNORANTIAM is Too Much a Chore to be Pertinent Posted: 21 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/Ad Ignorantiam poster (400 x 600)-thumb-200x200-36346.jpg) Armando Lao's Ad Ignorantiam can be divided into three unequal parts. The first part, tediously shot real time, details one afternoon in a busy city intersection where a hapless victim (Ina Feleo) of purse snatching, and her friend (Kimmy Maclang) confusedly scour nearby nooks and alleyways for the snatcher. They end up accusing a man (Kristoffer King), who was at the wrong place in the wrong time, of the crime. The second part, which serves to frame the first part within the structure of a court proceeding, displays an methodical and undramatic depiction of what happens inside courtrooms, where the frazzled characters, who are now litigants, of the first part are now joined by lawyers (Racquel Villavicencio and Allan Paule), a judge (Archie Adamos), and... Sundance 2013 Review: AUSTENLAND Is Clumsy, Unfunny Posted: 21 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/austenland-sundance-2013-thumb-200x200-36345.jpg) It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single lady who obsesses over the works of Jane Austen -- particularly Pride and Prejudice, and specifically the 1995 miniseries version with Colin Firth -- will find her real-life boyfriends lacking when compared to the dreamily perfect Mr. Darcy. This subclass of fandom was explored amusingly by Shannon Hale in her 2007 novel Austenland, a fluffy bit of chick-lit that I am not ashamed to say I read and found quite agreeable, even though I am a boy. Well, not to be one of those "the book is better than the movie" people, but holy crap, what an insufferable load the Austenland movie is. Park Chan-wook Gets Manic With New STOKER Trailer Posted: 21 Jan 2013 08:45 AM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/StokerPosterSmall-thumb-200x200-36352.jpg) Oldboy director Park Chan-wook premiered his English language debut - Stoker - yesterday at the Sundance Film Festival. The film seems to be polarizing audiences in Park City - read Ryland Aldrich's very positive first impression of the film here - and I imagine this latest trailer will do the same, thanks to an aggressively frantic editing style. After India's (Wasikowska's) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evelyn (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him. New EVIL DEAD Trailer. Green Band, Still Freaky. And while it was effective it definitely left the question standing of whether he could make you squirm when not slicing a woman's tongue in half because, well, he's pretty much constantly doing things like slicing a woman's tongue in half in that first trailer.Well, here comes the answer in the form of a new green band trailer. Less violence. Less blood. Still freaky. Sam Raimi - very much hands on as a producer of this - has promised to get back to the sincere, played very much straight horror roots... Dante Lam Gets His Fight On With MMA Posted: 21 Jan 2013 07:30 AM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/DanteLam-MMA-thumb-200x200-36347.jpg) There is something pleasingly efficient about the title of Dante Lam's latest foray into character driven action. The Hong Kong director is, after all, arguably the strongest action director working in the region today, his recent output excelling and finding a loyal audience around the globe in great part precisely because of their efficiency and no-apologies brawniness. So, a fight film from Lam titled simply MMA? Yes, that's enough to capture the attention. That it features his regular leading man - Nick Cheung - is simply an added bonus.FAI , once a world champion in boxing, escapes to Macau from the loan sharks and unexpectedly encounters QI , a young chap who is determined to win a boxing match. Christopher Bourne's Top Films of 2012 - Breaking News: Cinema Is Not Dead Posted: 21 Jan 2013 07:00 AM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/Holy Motors (4)-thumb-200x200-36315.jpg) Every so often, when writers and editors apparently have no better ideas at that moment, they will write alarmist think pieces bemoaning the "death of cinema." Most of the arguments usually boil down to three factors: big-budget blockbusters sucking up most of the air of discussion in the press (has it not always been thus?); the effects of changing technology in production and distribution (again, has this not always been happening?); and, more recently, that there's a lot of good stuff on TV.I won't attempt to argue against this silly notion here, other than to say that cinema's demise has been predicted almost from the time movies came into existence, and it was no truer then than it is now. Also, as far as I'm... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] ![](http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TwitchEverything/~4/PDLBtQobO78) |
Sundance 2013 Review: S-VHS Brings Even More Screams and Squeals Posted: 21 Jan 2013 06:00 AM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/sundance13_svhs2-thumb-200x200-36344.jpg) Though perhaps not the very most consistent of films, V/H/S set a high bar for found footage anthology chillers. Only one year later and the team that brought us that film is back with the follow-up, S-VHS. Of the original directors, only Adam Wingard (You're Next) returns. Writer Simon Barrett takes his first turn in the director's chair for the segments that wrap around shorts from Wingard, Gregg Hale & Eduardo Sanchez (Blair Witch Project), Gareth Evans (The Raid) & Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre), and Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun). With only four shorts plus the wrap around, the finished product is a tighter, more entertaining, and more consistent film. Consider the bar raised.
