Sundance 2013 Review: STOKER Is A Triumph Of Beauty And Violence

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 11:09 PM PST

Around these parts, a new Park Chan-wook film is an event to be highly anticipated. So I was quite excited to have the chance to see the maestro's latest film, Stoker, his first in English to boot, at Sundance last weekend. His uber-violent Vengeance trilogy, and political thriller JSA: Joint Security Area, are undisputed classics, though some would say (including me) the director later had a couple of minor missteps with I'm A Cyborg, But That's OK, and his vampire film, Thirst. So while Stoker was indeed at the tip-top of my "must see" list for Sundance, I didn't allow myself to turn cartwheels before I had a chance to lay my eyes on the film in its entirety. Now? I'm doing cartwheels.Stoker is what you've come to expect from Park's...

Dear Duncan Jones, Please Put Pandas In Your WARCRAFT Movie

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 07:30 PM PST

British director Duncan Jones has been just handed a whopper of a project. Having earned deserved acclaim for his breakout feature Moon, and somewhat positive reactions from some of our own for his follow up Source Code, Mr. Jones has just been tagged to take the helm of the upcoming Warcraft film. This is a pretty big deal for Jones - his biggest project to date -  and one that will surely be scrutinized by the online masses once production begins. In the meantime, I guess Jones will continue on with his Ian Fleming biopic? Borys Kit's exclusive at The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blogs reports:Legendary is keeping its script, written by Charles Leavitt, under wraps. The Warner Bros.-based production and finance outfit is eyeing a fall 2013...

First Five Movies: Director Walter Hill, From HARD TIMES to SOUTHERN COMFORT

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 05:15 PM PST

The first five films directed by Walter Hill -- whose latest effort, Bullet in the Head, opens on Friday, Feb. 1 -- reflect a rich diversity of historical periods and display a recognizably lean, laconic style. It's a style that would be crystalized and popularized in 48 HRS., his sixth film, which redefined the "buddy" movie for the 1980s and made Eddie Murray a star. Hill's ouevre is filled with mysterious characters -- men and women -- oozing machismo and quiet menace, often paired with people -- partners, accidental and otherwise -- who are less physically intimidating and more obviously imperfect, with their emotional and mental strengths waiting to be discovered. After 48 HRS., Hill played around more in a thematic sense with the wildly...

Director Venkat Siddareddy's CASE NO. 666/2013 Marks Telugu Cinema's First Foray Into Found Footage Horror

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 02:00 PM PST

While found footage may have largely worn out its welcome in the west, India has yet to exploit it to its full potential. Over the last couple of years a couple of Hindi language films have attempted to bring the style to the mainstream. The first, Ragini MMS, was more of a Paranormal Activity supernatural horror film, it seemed to strike something of a chord, thanks in no small part to some controversy surrounding the amount of sex in the film. The second film, micro-indie "?", barely made a dent at the box office and whether it was good or not, has been mostly forgotten. Case No. 666/2013 marks Telugu cinema's first attempt at a found footage horror film, and the trailer makes it look better...

WOLF CREEK 2 Launches Production

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST

Back in 2005 a little Australian horror film titled Wolf Creek became something of an international phenomenon making its villain, John Jarratt, a star in horror circles and launching then-unknown director Greg Mclean into the international market. McLean has been busy more as a producer than a director in the years since - he had a hand in Aussie western Red Hill and recent horror title Crawlspace - with only one directing credit since.Where has Mclean's energy been going? In great part he's been prepping what you would think was a sure thing, a sequel to the hit that made his name in the first place. But it's been a long and winding road to get Wolf Creek 2 in front of characters, one that...

With the European Film Market just around the corner, international sales agents Hanway Films have released the first still from Jim Jarmusch's upcoming vampire film Only Lovers Left Alive. All involved have been playing remarkably coy with details thus far - there's not even a synopsis on the Hanway site - but the shot features lead actors Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston looking about as otherworldly as you'd expect Swinton and Hiddleston to look in a vampire film by Jim Jarmusch. Hopefully this is the first taste of many ......

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST

There are certain universal constants in this world and one of them is that if a group of college students heads off into the remote woods something bad is going to happen. It's been true in America for decades and it is seemingly equally true in the Ukraine. Or so upcoming horror comedy (heavier on the horror, by the looks of things) Unforgotten Shadows would lead us to believe.A young college student and a group of friends find themselves victims of demons unwillingly released during a mishap at a prestiguous University.  To reverse the curse and save themselves, they travel to the forbidden mystical forest in western Ukraine.  There, they must locate the legendary Molfars that can help rid them of demonic possession and save...

Charlie Brooker's BLACK MIRROR Returns In 2013

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 07:00 AM PST

[Now with added trailer.]Though scarcely known outside of the UK, critic turned writer-director Charlie Brooker is considered something of a giant within certain circles in the UK. As a writer he made his splash early, the enormously controversial Pedophilia episode of Chris Morris' brilliant investigative journalism send up Brass Eye standing as his second formal credit. The collaboration with Morris would later continue with Brooker penning a great deal of Morris' television series Nathan Barley, a show that was considered relatively minor at the time but seems weirdly prescient now. Brooker's dominant field is media satire and while that generally falls into relatively straightforward formats he has increasingly been plying his trade in more genre friendly, narratively driven packages. His 2008 show Dead Set put...
