New Zealand directors Mark Albiston and Louis Sutherland made an instant fan of me with their 2009 short The Six Dollar Fifty Man, a gem that perfectly captures both the wonder and imagination of being a child and the darkness that comes with being a child raised in difficult circumstances. And the duo is going back to that same territory with their debut feature, the Sundance selected comedy-drama Shopping.Living in New Zealand in 1981 amid high racial tension, Willie, a half-Samoan teenager, is coming into his own. With an unpredictable father, Willie spends most of his time working at a department store or taking care of his little brother, Solomon. A chance encounter at work with an eccentric and charming "shopper" named Bennie lures Willie...

Get Behind The Scenes Of Dustin Nguyen's ONCE UPON A TIME IN VIETNAM

Posted: 12 Jan 2013 11:30 AM PST

Mark my words, international action fans: Keep your eyes on Vietnam. Fans have already taken notice of the output from the southeast Asian nation but 2013 should yield a handful of interesting titles, the most interesting of which are Charlie Nguyen's Cho Lon - check behind the scenes shots here - and Dustin Nguyen's Once Upon A Time In Vietnam.Previously known as Monk On Fire, Once Upon A Time In Vietnam has been a passion project of Nguyen's for years. And given the story revolves around supernaturally powered, motorbike riding, martial arts monks, there's a lot of things to feel passionate about.Nguyen is now just days away from completing principal photography and has released a number of behind the scenes shots via the film's Facebook...

Interview: Giovanni Ribisi on GANGSTER SQUAD

Posted: 12 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST

Gangster Squad has had a bit of a rough time of it, getting caught up in events well outside its control. Originally scheduled to be released last September, it was delayed due to the shooting in Aurora, Colorado. Not only is GS a Warner release like The Dark Knight Rises, with sensitivities for the studio already high, but there was a sequence where an audience became fodder at a gun battle in the famed Mann's Chinese theatre. The delay allowed the filmmakers to revisit that sequence, resulting in what I think was one of the better moments of the film. Still, the fact that the LA junket took place around the same time as the recent gun violence in Connecticut meant that once again...

Review: Gorber & Marsh duke it out over THE LAST STAND

Posted: 12 Jan 2013 06:00 AM PST

Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to our screens this month in his first leading role since Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines back in 2003. The Last Stand casts him alongside Johnny Knoxville, Forest Whitaker and Peter Stormare in an adrenaline-fuelled neo-Western from South Korean director Kim Ji-woon (A Bittersweet Life, I Saw The Devil). Two of the Twitch crew have managed to see the film already, and had wildly differing responses to it. Firstly, here's what I thought of the film, after catching it at a screening in Hong Kong last night: Essentially a remake of High Noon for the Fast & Furious crowd, The Last Stand has become a release of interest for two specific reasons. Firstly, but perhaps less interestingly, it marks the first...

Listen to an Extract from Clint Mansell's Score for Park Chan-wook's STOKER

Posted: 12 Jan 2013 04:47 AM PST

One film I'm looking forward to in 2013 more than almost any other, is South Korean director Park (Old Boy) Chan-wook's English-language debut, Stoker. Starring Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode, it is a dark, brooding, sensual drama that boasts a score from the excellent Clint Mansell (Pi, Black Swan, Moon). The film debuts at Sundance later this month, before opening in various territories in February and March, but here is your chance to get a taste of what Mansell has in store for us musically, as the track "In Full Bloom" has popped up on Soundcloud. Check it out below:...
