It's clear now that Rudy is absolutely the central character of Misfits. The assured scripting of the character is allowing the show to develop him strongly too, and this week we get to see a third incarnation of his split personality. In Series Four's most engaging episode so far, we see that a version of Rudy has just been released from prison and is set on confronting the other Rudys, who apparently betrayed him and got him locked up. Meanwhile, Finn has romantic complications with his stepmother in a lifeless subplot, and Curtis spends more time with the mysterious Lola.If I'd been told beforehand that this episode of Misfits would feature a tense and revelatory conversation punctuated by the Macarena and an incredibly creepy occurrence...

Blu-ray Review: WINDJAMMER Broadens Your Scope, It's A Cinemiracle! (Flicker Alley)

Posted: 11 Nov 2012 08:00 PM PST

In 1953 there was a revolution in filmmaking. With feature films starting to lose market share to the increasingly ubiquitous TV, film producers and studios began to panic. They had to offer something that TV couldn't, thus was born the widescreen film. This is obviously an incredible compressed version of a long and technically impenetrable story, but it is a good way to introduce the film Windjammer. You see, in the beginning of the widescreen revolution there wasn't any single standard. Sure, a lot of films began to be shot and framed with 1.85 or 1.66 aspect ratios in mind, but producers were still finding their feet. As a result, curiosity and ingenuity led to a plethora of filming options. Some of these options, such as...

Blu-ray Review: PAINTED SKIN: THE RESURRECTION (Well Go USA)

Posted: 11 Nov 2012 05:00 PM PST

Wuershan's romantic fantasy epic, Painted Skin: The Resurrection is ambitious, I have to give it that. Apart from being a bit overlong and repetitive, it's really pretty enjoyable as well. I think that if it has any major obstacles to overcome it is the expectation that many westerners will have that this is a big action film, when that couldn't be further from the truth. This film is more of a straight forward romance with a fantasy backdrop as opposed to a sweeping fantasy epic with romantic inclinations, and I think it works for the most part.According to the opening voiceover a fox demon who has been imprisoned in ice has escaped and is determined to find a human's body to possess so as to...

Okay, Asian action fans, here comes director Johnnie To doing what he does best: Gritty yet stylish action. DOC NYC 2012 Round-Up Part 1: THE PERVERT'S GUIDE TO IDEOLOGY, VENUS AND SERENA, CAN'T STAND LOSING YOU

Posted: 11 Nov 2012 10:00 AM PST

DOC NYC, a New York documentary festival, is currently screening its third edition at the IFC Center and the SVA Theater. The festival, which this year has an especially impressive program, runs through November 15. Below are reviews of three of this year's selections.THE PERVERT'S GUIDE TO IDEOLOGY (Sophie Fiennes)Director Sophie Fiennes and superstar philosopher Slavoj Zizek re-team in this follow-up to their 2006 collaboration The Pervert's Guide to Cinema, and this new film is as riveting, funny, and profound as its predecessor. The formula is pretty much the same: Zizek, with his inimitably passionate, excitable demeanor, holds forth in an almost non-stop monologue, during which he analyzes numerous films to build his arguments. Fiennes puts it all together with a witty, stylish flair, the...
