Eli Roth Shares First Image From GREEN INFERNO!

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 06:15 PM PST

Eli Roth has dropped a major clue as to how the story ends for the group of New York City students/activists who crash land in the jungle of Peru, only to be taken captive by the very tribe they set out to protect. From the image he has shared with his fans through his Tumblr account, I am going to guess it leans towards 'not well.'In this image, we see Kirby Bliss Banton as Amy and she clearly is not enjoying her time with the natives. A little bit of blood. A little bit of fear in the eyes. And no one likes hair in their food,  so it is a good thing the natives are cutting hers off. Nice knowing you, Amy. ...

Charlotte Gainsbourg + Threesome + African Men = First Still From Lars Von Trier's NYMPHOMANIAC

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 05:30 PM PST

Here is Charlotte Gainsbourg having a threesome with two African men. It is the first still for Lars von Trier's upcoming, two-part hardcore (in certain territories) opus, Nymphomaniac. No, it's not particularly subtle, and yes, von Trier is likely laughing about the fact that you are currently offended, provoked, turned on, confused or all of those things. And, just in case you thought the movie couldn't get anymore ridiculous, apparently the current cut is seven and a half hours long. Seriously.  Quoth executive producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen to the Hollywood Reporter: "It's almost enough for three films, and it's all good. I don't know what we'll cut."It'd be easy to get even more sarcastic about all this, except that, based on his last two movies,...

Berlinale 2013 Review: GLORIA Is A Joyful, Tragi-Comic Reminder To Keep On Truckin'

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 12:30 PM PST

Sure, the Berlinale competition slate this year is jam-packed with self-serious films about lesbian nuns, lesbian ex-convicts, German cowboys and insane sculptors, but, the most honest, touching and even unique film thus far is actually a hilarious, honest Chilean character study of a fairly normal woman. By "fairly normal," I don't mean boring, because, if you really dig deep with people, no one is actually boring, despite what movies would sometimes lead us to believe. The titular protagonist of Gloria certainly has her share of problems -- to start with, she's fifty-eight and divorced, her daughter is pregnant and about to move to Sweden with her boyfriend, who's a bit of a doofus, and her upstairs neighbor is having constant freak outs that wake her...

First Trailer For Suparn Verma's AATMA Puts A New Spin On The Old Ghost Story

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 11:00 AM PST

I've been waiting for this trailer for a long time and it looks even better than I'd hoped! From director Suparn Verma (Acid Factory, Ek Haseena Ek Khiladi) comes Aatma (Spirit/Soul), a new kind of ghost story. Aatma stars Bollywood bombshell Bipasha Basu, who is no stranger to horror, and my favorite working actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Basu plays the single mother of a young child whose father has died, but not without leaving a huge stain on his wife's life. Nawaz's character was a horribly abusive husband, and his death leaves Basu free to raise her daughter without fear. However, when strange things start happening, Basu realizes that she may not be as free of her past as she thinks. Nawaz is back from the...

The film is already available via various VOD platforms, including Amazon, iTunes, VUDU, PlayStation, Xbox Live, and Cinema Now, and releases on DVD and Blu-ray in North America tomorrow, February 12. Posted: 11 Feb 2013 10:01 AM PST

Good news if you're a Hammer film fan in the UK. Actually, can you be a fan of horror film in the UK and not be a fan of Hammer?  Seems inconceivable. Isn't that in their DNA? Moving along. Lionsgate has bought the UK rights for the studio's latest film The Quiet Ones, starring Jarred Harris (Fringe and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows) and Sam Claflin (Snow White and the Huntsman and Hunger Games: Catching Fire). The Quiet Ones is Hammer's next feature film following the successful run of The Woman in Black last year. Inspired by true events,THE QUIET ONES tells the story of an unorthodox professor (Harris) who uses controversial methods and leads his best students off the grid to take part in a dangerous experiment: to...

Sex! Love! Tiny Cocktails! Spanish Trailer for Almodóvar's I'M SO EXCITED

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 09:30 AM PST

Oh, Almodóvar. You've given us comedy, drama, romance, horror, and we come back for more. While he might have stumbled a bit in the early 2000s, the world's favourite Spanish filmmaker made a great comeback with 2011's The Skin I Live In, and looks to be continuing the trend with his new film, I'm So Excited (Los Amantes Pasajeros.) I showed the trailer to my film students, who without clues knew this was an Almodóvar film; that's how recognizable his brand has become. This is not meant as a slight; with a few exceptions, his films always feel fresh and original.Little is known of plot, except that most of it takes place on a small airplane. It it looks like a throwback to his early...

First Poster For Cop Thriller BADGES OF FURY Has Jet Li Packing Heat

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 09:00 AM PST

Hot on the heels of the European Film Market, the first promotional art for the cop actioner Badges of Fury (aka The One Detective) has debuted via Easternlight Films, featuring an explosive Jet Li standing tall and gun ready.  The cop standing beside Li is Wen Zhang who previously appeared with the action star in Ocean Heaven and The Sorcerer and the White Snake. The film is directed by Wang Zi Ming and produced by Po Chu Chui of Kung Fu Hustle and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame. With Wu Jing (SPL) and Collin Chou (The Matrix Reloaded, Flashpoint) also onboard in the cast line-up and Corey Yuen (Shaolin) serving as fight choreographer, martial arts fans will surely not be disappointed for the lack of quality...

Nick Damici Takes Lead Role In Adrian Garcia Bogliano's LATE PHASES

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 08:00 AM PST

Nick Damici, star of Twitch faves like Jim Mickle's Stakeland, Mulberry Street and his upcoming re-imagining of Jorge Michel Grau's We Are What We Are, will take the lead in Adrian Garcia Bogliano's Late Phases. Bogliano is also a favorite of ours with tremendous output into the Spanish-speaking horror scene with films like Here Comes The Devil, Penumbra, and Cold Sweat. From our perspective, this is a match made in genre heaven. This will be Bogliano's first English language project and shooting is expected to begin some time in the Spring. Bogliano had this to say about the addition of Nick to the project, "I'm super excited about having him on the project. He's a very talented actor and it's pretty obvious for his work as a writer that he is a very sensitive...

Berlinale 2013 Review: Ulrich Seidl's PARADISE: HOPE Is A Surprisingly Comic Diet Camp Love Story

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 07:30 AM PST

Ulrich Seidl's third part of his controversial "Paradise" trilogy, as expected, breaks taboos and offers plenty of squirm-inducing depictions of raw, socially unacceptable emotions... but oddly, it's also a really silly movie. In fact, most of the film, set in a diet camp for overweight kids, feels like an out-and-out comedy, as if Heavyweights was remade by an divisive Austrian provocateur with a fondness for long static shots. One scene where all of the camp kids stand in a row singing,  "If you're happy and you know it, clap your fat!" seems like it actually could have been in the Judd Apatow-scripted fat camp comedy. It's a bit of a surprise after Seidl's much more confrontational and devastating Paradise: Love, but in the end, not...

Blu-ray Review: THE WOODSMAN AND THE RAIN (Third Window)

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 07:00 AM PST

I now have the rare pleasure of having seen two coming-of-age comedy/drama films about young, insecure directors making zombie films from East Asia in the last 12 months. The first was Korea's Let Me Out, the story of a film school blowhard dared to put his money where his mouth is which I saw at Dallas IFF last year. The second, and inarguably the better of the two, is Okita Shuichi's The Woodsman and the Rain. The latter film has the distinct advantage of featuring the amazing Yakusho Koji in the lead role as the Woodsman of the title, but it's advantages go far beyond that. While Let Me Out felt almost like a meta-exploration of the challenges of making a film from a director suffering...

"A Pryor Engagement" at BAM Is a Welcome Reminder of the Film Work of an Influential Comic Genius

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 06:01 AM PST

"A Pryor Engagement," an 18-title survey of films featuring Richard Pryor, a comedian whose influence continues to loom over many others who followed in his wake (Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and Louis C.K. being only a few examples), screens at BAMcinématek in New York from February 8 through February 21. Pryor's politically astute and personally confessional humor, mining his painful struggles with drug addiction and complicated relationships with women, found expression in classic comedy albums as well as films with varying degrees of quality. BAM's series includes some of the more notable entries of Pryor's vast filmography (40 films), all in 35 millimeter, and all well worth catching on the big screen. As an added attraction, Monday through Thursday screenings are themed double features for single-admission...
