Full Disclosure: Twitch's Lists of Shame - February (Part 1) Posted: 24 Feb 2013 03:00 AM PST The intention for February's edition of Full Disclosure was to acknowledge Valentine's Day and, where possible, have our team of writers tackle a romance from their respective Lists of Shame. Whether that means an epic melodrama like Gone With The Wind, a classic Hollywood monster movie like King Kong, or a taboo-breaking Asian drama like Happy Together, love and relationships feature so prominently in the world of Cinema that it seemed a fun topic on which to focus. It hasn't worked out completely, some of our writers simply didn't have an appropriate film in their dozen titles, but for those paying attention, that was the focus behind this month's selections.Metropolis (dir. Fritz Lang, 1927 Germany)Todd Brown, Founder & Editor:Finally catching up with Fritz Lang's Metropolis... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Oscar Rundown, Part III: SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, AMOUR, and LIFE OF PI Posted: 23 Feb 2013 04:00 PM PST In this final stretch of examining the nine Academy Award nominees for Best Picture (don't miss parts one and two), the focus switches from the large, patriotically minded spectacles to more personal endeavors. Typically, such efforts tend to be smaller in scope, which is true of the first two, Silver Linings Playbook and Amour. But the film that this series will end on, Life of Pi, is the rare case of an intensely "inner" movie on a vast cinematic scale. Preferences and opinions about these three films run to wildly varying degrees, but for my money, each is a bona fide work of greatness, each earning a spot on my 2012 year-end top ten. One is my own top pick. For further thoughts and connections... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: KAI PO CHE Sets The Bar High For India In 2013 Posted: 23 Feb 2013 08:40 AM PST It's been a great couple of years for directing debutantes in India. Last year saw the first narrative work from Ashim Ahluwali, Miss Lovely, travel the world gaining praise on the festival circuit, and this year we have Abhishek Kapoor's first feature in five years, Kai Po Che, hitting international screens after an auspicious debut at the Berlinale. Unlike some of its Indian predecessors in Berlin, *ahemDon2ahem,* Kai Po Che is actually a film that can stand up to international scrutiny without the need for handicapping. Kapoor's film is not particularly ecstatic visually, but it is a story told with unusual grace, something sorely lacking in most mainstream Indian fare. Therein lies Kai Po Che's ticket to the big time: the ability to tell a gripping, at... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Trailer for SIMON KILLER: A Prostitute And a Sociopath Do Bad Things In Paris Posted: 23 Feb 2013 05:30 AM PST Looks like the city of light just got a little darker. The trailer for Antonio Campos' follow-up to Afterschool, Simon Killer, has arrived, and while it literally pulses with energy, it's not the happy kind. The story goes like this: The titular character (Brady Corbet) journeys in Paris in order to get over a break up, hooks up with a beautiful young prostitute and proceeds to ruin a number of lives. According to our own Joshua Chaplinsky, "It takes the tired "white kid goes to Europe, finds love and/or cultural enlightenment" premise and turns it on its head. It then stomps that head into the pavement."... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
AMOUR Wins Nearly Every Major Award at French Version of Oscars, The Césars Posted: 23 Feb 2013 04:30 AM PST -thumb-200x200-36323.jpg) On the eve of the Academy Awards, Michael Haneke's meditation on death, Amour, swept the César Awards in France, taking home best film, best director, best actor and actress and best original screenplay. That means that the film with the most nominations, Camille Rewinds, and the film with the most love here at Twitch, Holy Motors, both walked away with zero awards. Meanwhile, Argo took home the award for best foreign film and my favorite movie of last year, Ernest and Celestine won the award for best animated film. Here's the full list of awards:Best Film: Amour by Michael HanekeBest Director: Michael Haneke for AmourBest Actress: Emmanuelle Riva in AmourBest Actor: Jean-Louis Trintignant in AmourBest Actress in a Supporting Role: Valérie Benguigui in Le PrénomBest...
