Guilty Zombie Teen Returns Home in BBC Three's IN THE FLESH

Posted: 26 Feb 2013 03:00 AM PST

Kieren Walker may look like a self-loathing emo-teen, but that's just because he's been dead for four years. The three-part BBC Three drama In the Flesh tells the story of young Kieren's reintegration back into society. Along with thousands of other dead people, Kieren came back to life, precipitating some kind of zombie apocalypse. But, having undergone months of rehabilitation and taking special "de-zombie" meds (my description, not theirs), they are returning to their local communities and families. Here's a bit of the official synopsis: Now known as PDS sufferers (Partially Deceased Syndrome) - and since the passing of the PDS Protection act - the government have set an agenda of acceptance and tolerance, one that is at odds with the communities abandoned at the...

Review: BLACK MIRROR S2E03: THE WALDO MOMENT (Or, A Cartoon Bear Makes A Mockery Of Politics)

Posted: 26 Feb 2013 01:01 AM PST

Where is the line drawn between politics and entertainment? In the final instalment of the excellent second series of Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror, that issue is exactly what is under the spotlight. It's perhaps the most plausible episode of the show so far, following what happens when a cartoon bear (presenting a particularly juvenile but popular brand of humour) ends up participating as a candidate in a by-election.The blue bear, named Waldo, is voiced by young comedian Jaime (Daniel Rigby) and provides audiences with empty amusement by vulgarly pointing fun at politicians. Sensing the character's potential, Jack Napier (Jason Flemyng) pushes for Waldo to get his own pilot. Things take an unexpected turn, however, when a brainstorming session leads to the idea of running Waldo...

SyFy: ROBOT COMBAT LEAGUE, STRANDED and HAUNTED COLLECTER

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 08:45 PM PST

In the upcoming wave of programming starting this week from SyFy you can take your pick of fighting robots, stranded paranormal investigators and paranormal interventions. Robot Combat League WWE wrestler Chris Jericho hosts what is essentially Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots for grown up kids. The competition style reality show Robot Combat League pairs up athletes/gamers/active types with engineers/programmers/nerd types and together they pilot and fight with large robots. We're still a ways away from action like Real Steal as these robots are tethered and anchored from behind but the teams indeed control every movement and motion on the floor. It really looks like a lot of fun to do. From the first episode it would appear that the more athletic types will operate the...

SXSW 2013 Exclusive: Trailer Debut for SAKE-BOMB

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 05:42 PM PST

There's really nothing as funny as some good ironically racist humor, which is exactly what looks to be on full display in this Twitch exclusive trailer debut for Junya Sakino SXSW Premiering debut feature Sake-Bomb. Billed as a sexed-up road comedy, the film is written by Jeff Mizushima and stars Gaku Hamada, Eugene Kim, Marlane Barnes, and Josh Brodis. Here is the description from the press notes, followed by the trailer: Sebastian is a bitter, self-hating wannabe Internet star from Los Angeles who has recently been dumped by his girlfriend and is looking for someone new. When his cousin Naoto, a quiet sake maker from Japan, shows up to find his own ex-girlfriend, Sebastian reluctantly takes him to northern California to find her. The...

Cinematic Spectacle And Nacho Vigalondo's OPEN WINDOWS

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 03:00 PM PST

Back in the late 19th century, in the early years of cinema, purveyors of this new art form would show the spectacle at fairgrounds and carnivals. It was not yet a new mode of storytelling, but a technological wonder. After a time (and in no small part due to the burgeoning urban population fueled by the industrial revolution), cinema moved into proper theatres. With each new technological advancement (sound, colour, etc.), there is a period of wonder, then as audiences adjust, a seemingly natural inclination to want these advancements to serve the narrative. This had been particularly relevant of late, with the return of 3D, the proliferation of IMAX theatres, and the increased use of CGI and digital effects (I won't pretend to be an expert...

Oh, that angsty feeling. You know the one. The one that feels like the evil clown from It and Leatherface are doing battle in your stomach. Yeah, that one. We've all had that, right? The answer, my friends, is tea. Herbal tea.I can't imagine that we'll ever run another ad spot for organic herbal tea here on Twitch, but hey ... when someone turns in an ad like Andreas Roth did for Herbaria you just can't say no....

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 09:00 AM PST

Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado turned a lot of heads back in 2010 with the release of Rabies, a film billed as the first ever Israeli slasher. Now on Blu-ray: Redemption Films: Good, Bad, & Ugly: THE PETE WALKER COLLECTION, OASIS OF THE ZOMBIES, ZOMBIE LAKE

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 07:00 AM PST

It's been a little over a year since Kino Lorber's partnership with Redemption Films bore fruit to the home video consumer with their releases of five classic Jean Rollin features. The last year has been an amazing ride packed with some incredible titles and neat little discoveries for the discerning Eurosleaze film fan. The latest batch of titles from Redemption prove nothing if not their dedication to preservation of these sometimes awful films, but their treatment of even the most boring of garbage is to be commended, and lord knows there's someone out there chomping at the bit to complete their collection. That someone is me.The Pete Walker CollectionOne of the fantastic things about Redemption Films vast catalog is that they, very much like the BFI's...
