Nick Cheung and Aaron Kwok Pair Up in the CONSPIRATORS Trailer (aka THE DETECTIVE 3) Posted: 04 Feb 2013 02:43 AM PST Far and away the best thing that Danny and Oxide Pang have produced in recent years is their Bangkok-based cop thriller, The Detective, starring Aaron Kwok. While the sequel was a distinct drop in quality from its predecessor, the fact that Nick Cheung has joined the cast for part three has me actually looking forward to this. Bizarrely the English title of the film is Conspirators, which while hinting at some kind of crime-fighting partnership between Cheung and Kwok, it does unnecessarily disassociate itself from the previous two films. In Chinese the films were called "C grade Detective" and "B grade Detective" respectively, and this pattern appears to be continuing to some degree, with an "A" motif in the Chinese title, though the second character also appears... |
Wong Kar Wai Cuts THE GRAND MASTER Further For Berlin Posted: 03 Feb 2013 11:15 PM PST According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai has excised a further 15 minutes out of his new martial arts epic The Grand Master, ahead of its international debut at the Berlin International Film Festival this coming Thursday. The film, which fictionalises the early life of wing chun pioneer Ip Man (played here by Tony Leung Chiu Wai), was cut from an apparent 4-hour version to 130 minutes in time for its Chinese premiere on 8 January. News that Wong has now re-edited the film to bring it in under two hours is somewhat distressing. In its current form, The Grand Master is an incredibly beautiful and enjoyable film, but there is no denying the second half already feels heavily truncated, with Taiwanese star... |
Review: THE BERLIN FILE Delivers Stellar Action, But Ultimately Disappoints Posted: 03 Feb 2013 10:10 PM PST From North By Northwest (1959) all the way to Tinker Sailor Soldier Spy (2011), spy thrillers have long captured the imagination of filmgoers. Over time they have become more elaborate and their appeal has led to a number of blockbuster franchises. James Bond recently celebrated his most successful outing to-date with the chart-topping Skyfall while both the Mission Impossible and Bourne series have also stirred up some serious business. Korea is no stranger to the genre. Shiri was the country's first blockbuster hit in 1999 and the country's contentious relationship with its Northern neighbor has yielded many a spy narrative since then. Ryoo Seung-wan previously dabbled in spies with his deliriously playful and inventive (but financially poisonous) spoof Dachimawa Lee (2008). He found greater success... |
TV Review: HOUSE OF CARDS S1E02-13, CHAPTERS 2-13 (Or, Storytelling As An Art And/Or Science) Posted: 03 Feb 2013 07:00 PM PST I came, I saw, I binged. House of Cards started with two gangbuster episodes, both directed by David Fincher. Fincher serves as an executive producer, along with Kevin Spacey, Beau Willimon, Eric Roth, Josh Donen, and others, for the Netflix original series; all 13 episodes debuted on the same day to allow for binge-viewing. Thus, I did. Though I did not come away completely sated -- it's important to note that the series has a two-season commitment, so another 13 episodes are coming -- the series as a whole is completely absorbing, offering a multitude of pleasures. Most especially, House of Cards allows the opportunity to savor finely-tuned performances by Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, and Corey Stoll, who form three-fourths of the primary storylines of... |
STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Big Game Spot Posted: 03 Feb 2013 06:00 PM PST If you can peel your eyes away from the Big Game itself -- I confess I'm presently looking over my shoulder watching the halftime show as I type this. Zowie! -- we would like to direct your attention to the Big Game spot for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness. It is short and sweet but has just a smattering of new footage, including more jumping from tremendous heights. Are we picking up on a new trend here? Lens flares and plummeting from high places? Is this something we should come to expect in Episode VII?Head on over to the Apple trailers site and see for yourself. ... |

IFFR 2013: It's Awards Time! MATTERHORN, WADJA, and More Win Posted: 03 Feb 2013 04:16 PM PST This weekend saw the closing of this year's International Film Festival Rotterdam, and this means all of its awards are now known. The three Hivos Tiger Awards for best film by a newcomer (only first and second features count) were won by the following: My Dog Killer, by Mira Fornay (Slovakia / Czech Republic) Soldate Jeannette, by Daniel Hoesl (Austria) Fat Shaker, by Mohammad Shirvani (Iran) Each of these winners takes home 15,000 Euro and some distribution deals, as for starters the Tigers will be shown on Dutch television in the coming year. The UPC Audience Award surprisingly went to a Dutch film for the first time since 1998, and it was one of three Dutch films in the final top 10. But after being... |
Sundance 2013 Review: THE RAMBLER Wanders Into Disorientation And Madness Posted: 03 Feb 2013 02:37 PM PST If David Lynch and David Cronenberg teamed up with Werner Herzog early in their careers and made a movie together, it would have been Calvin Reeder's The Rambler. Wherever you stand with these three auteurs, that's either a big, big compliment, or it's quite the opposite. I proudly stand on the former side of the fence, so this review is going to say some flattering things about The Rambler, a mixture of unhinged brilliance, idiocy, unsettling confusion, and a whole lot of chaos. The Rambler opens with its titular character (Dermot Mulroney) being released from jail. We're not sure why he was in jail, and it definitely wasn't to ride ponies, but from the look of his welcome home party -- full of miscreants -- it's... |
