Peter Dinklage Joins X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Posted: 13 Feb 2013 11:30 PM PST Director Bryan Singer took to Twitter earlier this evening to announce the latest cast member for his third X-Men outing (and the franchise's sixth film). Straight from the horse's mouth: Officially like to welcome #PeterDinklage from #GameOfThrones to #XMEN #DaysofFuturePast Very very excited!... As I am sure plenty of film and TV fans around the globe are too. Full disclosure: I'm not a GoT fan, but I can't deny Dinklage is rather great on that show and I do adore his performance in 2003's The Station Agent. So just who could Dinklage be playing in the cinematic X-verse? First up, if you aren't familiar, Days Of Future Past derives its title from the 1981 two-issue arc in Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont, John Byrne and... Review: Meaningful Stillness in Jang Kun-jae's SLEEPLESS NIGHT Posted: 13 Feb 2013 10:00 PM PST Of late, Korean Cinema has made for rather bleak viewing. Hushed up sexual violence has been very prevalent but politics, torture and much else besides have also found their way into these recent narratives. For this reason, among many others, I am particularly grateful for Jang Kun-jae's magnificent sophomore feature Sleepless Night. His new film, though not without its portrayal of injustice and hardship, is a film about happiness, or at least one loving couple's pursuit of it in modern day Seoul. A married couple in their mid-30s are juggling their jobs (he is a factory worker, she a yoga instructor), schedules and obligations as they strive to find satisfaction in their lives. They go on bike rides at night, lounge around their modern Korea... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Danny Boyle's TRANCE Red Band Trailer Looks Bloody Good Posted: 13 Feb 2013 07:30 PM PST My excitement level just shot through the roof. Danny Boyle's upcoming crime opus Trance now looks longer on bloodshed and shorter on laughs than first impressions suggested. Either way, his flair for the visual and knack for high-octane storytelling looks to be in full effect here. Here is the synopsis:James McAvoy stars as a fine art auctioneer who has teamed up with a criminal gang to steal a Goya painting worth millions. However, after suffering a blow to the head during the heist, he has no recollection of where he hid it. The gang's leader hires a hypnotherapist (Rosario Dawson) to bring the truth to light, delving deep into Simon's subconscious where reality is blurred with fiction and deceit. Factor in bad ass Vincent Cassel and a screenplay from Joe... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: BEAUTIFUL CREATURES Is Perkier, More Fun Than Most Teen Romances Posted: 13 Feb 2013 04:35 PM PST There's a lengthy, dragging middle section of the supernatural teen romance Beautiful Creatures that threatens to sink the whole enterprise. Tellingly, it's when the nuts and bolts of the plot kick in: as the witch's pivotal 16th birthday approaches, good and evil forces conspire to influence her, her non-witch boyfriend is put at risk, ancient feuds come to a head, yada yada. It comes from the young-adult series of novels by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, but it might as well come from any of the other young-adult novels with supernatural elements that have proliferated since the advent of a certain one that rhymes with "Shmilight." When the mythology isn't the focus, though, the movie version of Beautiful Creatures is surprisingly peppy and charming --... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
5 Films That Make Me Glad I'm Single Posted: 13 Feb 2013 02:00 PM PST As a confirmed bachelor -- confirmed to me by a number of other people, by the way, sometimes by court order -- the annual celebration of Valentine's Day is something of a trial, one that is only assuaged by watching movies that make me glad I am free from such romantic bondage. Like these five ... Audition (1999; d. Miike Takashi) Singleness in middle-age can make a man do silly things, like [embarrassing personal anecdote deleted], fail to [another embarrassing, too-personal recollection], and, oh, I don't know, awkwardly audition a possible mate just because he's so dang lonely (and the young woman is so attractive). Only the third foolish act is depicted in Miike Takashi's Audition, but the consequences are sufficiently severe that the mere... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Fox Says It's A GOOD DAY TO [BLEEP] HARD In UK Posted: 13 Feb 2013 01:00 PM PST Fans in the U.S. were delighted to hear that A Good Day to Die Hard had received an "R" rating, taking it as an article of faith that the fifth installment in the franchise would not be softening the trademark explicit violence and obscenities in hopes of gaining a larger audience, a route followed by the largely disappointing Live Free or Die Hard. In the UK, however, Fox decided on a different path, resulting in a 12A certificate from the BBFC. Why the changes? According to people who protested directly to Fox, the company feels this will "delight" fans in the UK: We can confirm that working with the BBFC some minor cuts were made in order to achieve a 12A certificate. We believe the... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Elijah Wood Needs A Girlfriend, MANIAC UK Trailer Strongly Suggests Posted: 13 Feb 2013 12:00 PM PST Oh, Frodo. Couldn't you have found a nice hobbit in the Shire, settled down, and kept your hands off sharp, sharp knives and beautiful human women? Franck Khalfoun's Maniac opens in the UK on March 15, and to celebrate the release, Metrodome has unleashed a new trailer. Brian Clark, Twitch's European Editor, saw it last year at the L'Etrange festival and wrote, in part: This updated, Los Angeles-set story of a disturbed man cutting off the scalps of women and taking them back to his mannequin collection at home is sadistic, unapologetic, gory and extremely well-directed. It's inventive on its own terms without betraying the original, and while some may still question the need for its existence, the film is honestly much more effective than... You Will Believe A Man Can Shrink. THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN Getting A Reboot Posted: 13 Feb 2013 11:30 AM PST Jack Arnold's The Incredible Shrinking Man is a science fiction classic, thrilling in its execution and terrifying in its implications. But, you know, it's in black and white, and it's older than dirt (i.e. made in 1957), and MGM is out of bankruptcy now, and so we're getting a remake, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Now, the only thing that tempers my knee-jerk groan is the involvement of Richard Matheson, who wrote the novel (The Shrinking Man) that inspired the movie. The still-working Matheson, 87, will co-author the screenplay with his son Richard Matheson, Jr., which means the new version has a shot at something good. How will the story be updated? The Mathesons will modernize the story to reflect advancements such as nanotechnology. Describing... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Johnnie To's DRUG WAR Spreading To US, France And Beyond Posted: 13 Feb 2013 11:00 AM PST Johnnie To's Drug War has been picked up by Well Go USA for distribution in North America, according to Variety. The film has also sold to distributors Metropolitan (France) and Discovery (former Yugoslavia), with deals in 11 more territories expected to close shortly. The film had its world premiere at the Rome Film Festival last fall, and played last month at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where our own Ard Vijn saw it. He concluded: Not every last little thing may work in Johnnie To's new crime thriller, but the vast majority of it clicks together as a damn solid piece of action craftsmanship, anchored by two good leads. Seeing this film in the middle of a festival felt like drinking a strong cup of... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Gondry Animates Chomsky in Trailer for New Doc IS THE MAN WHO IS TALL HAPPY? Posted: 13 Feb 2013 10:31 AM PST I've come to the conclusion that Michel Gondry never sleeps. Either he's an insomniac or constantly high on caffeine, but his output is pretty incredible, especially in variety. With the trailer for his upcoming feature fiction film Mood Indigo only a few weeks old, there is now a trailer for a documentary project, Is the Man Who is Tall Happy?, about famed philosopher, linguist and cognitive scientist Noam Chomsky.Based on interviews with Chomsky over several months, Gondry decided that, since the interviews were mainly audio only, he would animate much of the film. This is not only in keeping with his own sense of playfulness, but also Chomsky's incredibly sharp and wide-ranging analyses on topics from US foreign policy to social psychology. It looks and sounds like... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Exclusive Interview: Horror Pundit and Acclaimed Artist Julian Hoeber Posted: 13 Feb 2013 10:00 AM PST Visual artist Julian Hoeber has a flair for the dramatic. His busy hands range from painting, sculpturing (see the terrifyingly awesome image above), photography, installations, a "freestanding structure based on the architecture of 'gravitational mystery spots," filmmaker, and now, horror documentarian. In his latest piece, entitled Where is the Money?, Hoeber dissects the horror genre, from when it (perhaps) began with Gustav Courbet's painting Burial at Ornans, to lo-fi grindhouse films in the early 70s all the way up to today's big-budget blockbusters. Using various clips from Freaks, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist, Scream, House of the Devil, and more, U.S. radio correspondent Barbara Bogaev narrates Hoeber's 13-minute short on poverty and violence through horror filmmaking from the early stages. Recently, Twitch chatted with Hoeber... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Cocaine and Principles Make Uneasy Partners In DOWN AND DANGEROUS Trailer Posted: 13 Feb 2013 09:31 AM PST 'My father was a cocaine smuggler' sounds like a great inspiration for a movie. Filmmaker Zak Forsman credits his father, who briefly worked in the drug trade, as the creative spark behind Down and Dangerous, which will enjoy its world premiere at the Phoenix (Arizona) Film Festival with screenings on April 5-7. The film is an original project that benefited from crowdfunding. Here's the official synopsis: Always one step ahead of the Feds, Paul Boxer is the most inventive and principled smuggler in the trade, and has never needed to carry a gun. When violent mid-level traffickers coerce him into designing a foolproof plan to bring several kilos of cocaine across the México border, he maneuvers to rid himself of their hold over him once... Kurosawa's REAL Brings Minds Together In Lightning-Fast First Trailer Posted: 13 Feb 2013 09:01 AM PST Bam! Zoom! Mind meld! The first teaser for Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Real (formerly known as A Perfect Day For Plesiosaur) may not not have any English subtitles, but it still got me plenty excited. Set for theatrical release in Japan on June 1, Kurosawa's first true theatrical project since 2008's Tokyo Sonata revolves around two minds coming together as one. Koichi and Atsumi are lovers who have known each other all their lives. A year ago, however, a suicide attempt by Atsumi left her in a coma. Through 'sensing', a type of neurosurgical procedure allowing contact with the intentional aspect of a comatose patient's mind, Koishi tries to find out why Atsumi tried to kill herself, and to bring her back to consciousness. He enters her... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Tom Cruise Wakes Up In OBLIVION UK Trailer Posted: 13 Feb 2013 08:30 AM PST The first trailer for Joseph Konsinski's Oblivion was underwhelming. As our own Todd Brown wrote: "It's not really clicking as spectacle - the visuals offering little that a good video game doesn't - and the ideas seem rather re-heated thus far." Now a new trailer has been unveiled in the UK. Does it do the trick? You can decide for yourself by watching the trailer below. It features much of the same footage as the first trailer, but it frames the action with a greater emphasis on the memories of the lead character, a drone repairman on a "mop up job," and a woman who still haunts him. Cruise cuts a good figure as an action hero, but he's always been a bit deficient... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Now On Blu-ray: Drafthouse Films Presents MIAMI CONNECTION, TRAILER WAR, And WAKE IN FRIGHT Posted: 13 Feb 2013 08:01 AM PST Following their release of Mads Brugger's The Ambassador, Drafthouse Films tackled a pair of very different rep titles, and the result is a pair of extremely different, but extremely entertaining features, the likes of which we don't see too often. Those films, YK Kim's Miami Connection and Ted Kotcheff's Wake in Fright, are among the finest films I saw in 2012. The third title is their website exclusive trailer compilation, Trailer War, which is a boatload of fun and a great primer to the attitude and spirit from whence the Alamo Drafthouse sprang.Miami Connection:I don't know if I had a more enjoyable theatrical experience than my first night at Fantastic Fest 2012. Seated with a team of trash aficionados, Rewind This! director Josh Johnson, Twitch sleaze... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
YELLOW Director Ventures Into Antoni Maiovvi's DARKROOM Posted: 13 Feb 2013 06:00 AM PST The giallo is strong with this one. Director Ryan Haysom and cinematographer Jon Britt enjoyed a great year in 2012, with their neo-giallo serial killer short Yellow proving something of a festival darling around the world. I was able to catch it at London's Film4 FrightFest last August, and the film does a masterful job of recapturing the look and feel of classic Italian sleaze and horror. Those skills are again on display in Haysom and Britt's latest project, co-directed with TJ Lee - a music video for Antoni Maiovvi's "Darkroom," from the EP "Stockholm Synthdrone." Maiovvi (real name Anton Maiof) cites the likes of Goblin, Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter among his influences, so this seems like a perfect fit. You can check out the...
