Review: BLACK MIRROR S2E02:bla WHITE BEAR (Or, Technology Leaves Us Disconnected In This Tale Of Memory Loss, Isolation And Horror)

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 02:00 AM PST

"White Bear" is the single darkest episode of Black Mirror so far. That's definitely saying something for a show that is far from cheerful at the best of times. However, if you found last week's "Be Right Back" just a little more sentimental than expected, the more surreal edge that Charlie Brooker is known for is back on display here.Lenora Crichlow plays a young woman who wakes up in unfamiliar house with no memory, she tries to piece things together but finds herself lost and alone in a world where bystanders appear to be more interested in filming her on their phones than helping her. When she encounters Jen (Tuppence Middleton), it is revealed to her that much of the population have effectively been turned...

Shin Ha-kyun Is The RUNNING MAN

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 02:03 PM PST

Not to be too much of a raving fan about it, but South Korea's Shin Ha-kyun is, quite simply, one of the finest actors of his generation from anywhere in the world. Capable of quirky comedy, stark terror, compelling drama and everything in between - sometimes within the span of a single scene - he may not be the most prolific performer but Shin is consistently quality. Just take a look at the man's resume: Joint Security Area. Sympathy For Mister Vengeance. Save The Green Planet. Sympathy For Lady Vengeance. Welcome To Dongmakgol. Thirst. The Front Line. The Thieves. You get the point. while he's done his share of movies that aren't very good, Shin is always good in them and when he hits a...

Posters And Music Teaser For Banjong Pisanthanakun's Horror Comedy PEE MAK PHRAKANONG

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 12:00 PM PST

Thai director Banjong Pisanthanakun is getting back to his roots. The helmer first broke onto the scene as one half of the duo responsible for 2004 breakout horror hit Shutter, a success quickly followed by 2007 chiller Alone. Pisanthanakun and directing partner Parkpoom Wongpoom were the hottest things going in a generally boiling Asian horror scene at the time but, strangely, neither has directed a horror oriented feature since. Both halves of the duo turned in horror shorts in the Phobia and Phobia 2 horror anthologies, the latter of which is the last time Wongpoom appeared on screen at all. Pisanthanakun? He wrote and directed a hit romcom in 2010, and turned up this past year with a segment in The ABCs of Death but...

Hey, Toronto! Win Passes For An Advance Screening Of Park Chan-wook's STOKER!

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 11:00 AM PST

Park Chan-wook's English language debut Stoker divided audiences when it screened in Sundance - where our Sean Smithson loved it, as did our own Ard Vijn and Peter Van Der Lugt when they caught the European premiere in Rotterdam - and, really, we'd expect no less from the acclaimed but controversial director of Old Boy, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance and Thirst. Stoker begins its theatrical run here in Toronto on March 1 but 10 lucky Toronto based Twitch readers are going to get the chance to see it early. Yes, there is an advanced screening planned for February 28th and we've got ten passes to give away. All you need to do to claim your ticket is email me here and tell me the name...

Berlinale 2013 Review: COMPUTER CHESS Wins, Despite Its Bold Moves

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 10:15 AM PST

Despite the fact that Computer Chess is a movie about programmers competing to change the way humans perceive computers, it's about as far removed from the cutthroat melodrama of The Social Network or Pirates of Silicon Valley as a movie can possibly get. Instead, director Andrew Bujalski has crafted a much stranger, funnier and occasionally frustrating portrait of a group of oddballs trying to push computer intelligence to the next level. At times it recalls Robert Altman's wry, observational ensemble pieces -- think Nashville, Health and Ready to Wear -- but, ultimately, Bujalski makes the material his own, with an even looser, freer-flowing structure than Altman, a healthy dose of the psychedelic, and by going aesthetically where few filmmakers dare to tread. The setting is a...

FEAR & LOATHING @ SUNDANCE PART V: The Epic F*cking Conclusion You've Been Waiting For!

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 09:01 AM PST

CHAPTER 14: CASH FOR GOLD, FILMS FOR GUNSAnother morning, another hang over. I'm now on day 4 of the festival and I still can't be sure if I've actually gotten any sleep in the last 96 hours. Dementia is starting to set in and I fear what that might lead to. I find myself lying on a bare mattress in the Mattress Ware House's stockroom. It's funny to think that someone might be purchasing this at some point the future. I chuckle to myself thinking of the particular detail that there may be blood stains on this from my ass flogging the previous night. Lord only knows what might be on the other mattresses laid out on the floor around me. There are a few...

Get Behind The Scenes Of Erik Matti's ON THE JOB

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 08:30 AM PST

Variously known at different stages as either OTJ or OJT, Erik Matti's long awaited prison hitman thriller has settled on the full title of On The Job and with the picture now nearing the end of principal photography a gallery of behind the scenes images has been released. Based on an actual corruption scandal in which prisoners were released on day passes to work as hitmen - yes, I'm serious, this really happened - the picture promises to be a gritty yet stylish action thriller more in line with what we typically expect from Hong Kong fare than anything produced in the Philippines in recent years. There's no word yet on when a trailer will be released to the public - believe me, it'll be worth...

Oscar Rundown: ZERO DARK THIRTY, DJANGO UNCHAINED, LINCOLN

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 08:01 AM PST

Most any seasoned film fan has at one time or another come to experience the annual Oscar race in varying parts exciting, perilous, exhausting, fun, and dismissible. If you're at all like me, your attention to this annual ritual (and attention WILL be paid, even in dismissiveness) is both rife with legitimate excitement and anticipation - a cinephile's longing for quality to be recognized by a broader audience (however fleeting their gaze) - and a horse race gambler's obsessions, laying the odds on every category. Ultimately, the true value and worth of what's come to be known as Film Awards Season (spanning roughly from early December with the first critics groups awards through Oscar night) lies not in the here and now (unless you're one...

NYC Happenings: Film Comment Selects Starts Tonight

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 07:30 AM PST

...And it runs through the 28th. An eclectic selection from old guard masters and young upstarts the world over, with a few little seen oldies in the mix, the 2013 edition of Film Comment Selects at The Film Society of Lincoln Center is bound to have something for every kind of Twitch reader. On one end of the spectrum there's Ben Wheately's Sightseers and on the other end we have the U.S. premiere of Phillipe Grandrieux's White Epilepsy, which on the title alone piques my interest. Dustin Chang was fortunate enough to catch the selections Gebo And The Shadow, from Portuguese master Manoel de Oliveria, as well as Marco Bellocchio's Dormant Beauty. Here are his thoughts on both:  105 year old Manoel de Oliveira's latest...

Review: Is 26 YEARS the Ultimate Korean Revenge Narrative?

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 07:01 AM PST

Just like anyone else, I come from a country (Ireland) with historical scars that refuse to completely fade away. These days, the sad fact is that my connection with my home is tenuous at best. Nevertheless, as we approach the centenary following the Easter Rising of 1916, the terrible event that saw a group of passionate Irishmen stand up to their English oppressors only to be brutally suppressed, is still an indelible part of who I am. My grandmother, who recently died aged 100, was only 4 years old when it happened. It should be ancient history for me: a bygone event that took place in a country I didn't spend much of my youth in and that I don't easily identify with. Yet somehow,...

Mads Mikkelsen As HANNIBAL In First Trailer. Will He Eat People On TV?

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 06:30 AM PST

Mads Mikkelsen is good, Mads Mikkelsen can be great, but can Mads Mikkelsen convince everyone that he's Hannibal Lecter, AKA "Hannibal the Cannibal"? Mikkelsen plays the character, created by Thomas Harris in his 1981 novel Red Dragon, in a new U.S. TV show set to debut on April 4. The show, titled simply Hannibal, stars Hugh Dancy as FBI profiler Will Graham, and is an origin story. It's set during the beginning of the relationship between Graham and Dr. Lecter, before Graham (or anyone except the audience) learns that the good doc is a serial killer with a taste for human flesh. Laurence Fishburne plays Graham's boss, Jack Crawford. Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Heroes) is the key creative force behind the show. The first...

Get Over Here!!! First Trailer For MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY 2

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 06:01 AM PST

Back in 2011, a series of nine webisodes were released under the title of Mortal Kombat Legacy. All origin stories, each episode (with a couple of two-parters thrown into the mix) presented an origin story of characters from the video game franchise. The aim was to present to Warner Bros. the director's vision for a feature film. In the Fall of 2011, it seemed like everything was a go and director Kevin Tancharoen would no longer have to direct another Glee or Fame film to feed his family. Though there has not been a whole lot to report on a feature film since then, a new web series is set to begin. The Mortal Kombat Legacy continues in Season 2 as Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kenshi, and...

Happy holiday weekend most of North America! Up here in Canada various provinces have a holiday Monday and south of the 49th Parallel our friends in the States will have Presidents Day!
