THE FINAL JUDGEMENT Is Upon Japan! Brought To You By Happy Science!

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 02:00 AM PST

We should clarify that when we say that the trailer for The Final Judgement is for a Japanese spiritual thriller, we do not mean ghosts and goblins but religion: Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad. The whole lot. I do not know if any of the other world religions make such movies, but this reminds me of the terrible Christian Left Behind movies (the first one starred Kirk Cameron - thumbs up!) and one called The Omega Code, which thankfully I never saw on the shelves of the library at my place of worship. So why write about The Final Judgement at all? Well, according to our source this movie is the first of its kind in Japan to be funded and made by a religious organization. So it...

TV Review: COMMUNITY S4E03, Conventions Of Space And Time (Or, When Fan Service Doesn't Work)

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 10:00 PM PST

Since most of tonight's episode takes place in and around the Inspector Spacetime "InspectiCon", I guess now is as good a time as any to talk a bit about fandom, Community and my credentials for reviewing the show.Community fans may be small in viewing numbers but they have a lot of bite and big hearts and are a very creative bunch. They're very vocal, incredibly intelligent and... see that's some rather obvious fan service, a veritable hyper bowl of hyperbole. Though I'm in no way in the inner circle of Community fandom I've been a fan of the show since the pilot was previewed online in August 2009. I just knew the man behind Laser Fart had something going, and I convinced many I knew...

Review: SNITCH Doesn't Reveal Anything Except Its Good Intentions

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 09:01 PM PST

A well-meaning but lumbering drama that feels like an extended prologue in search of an action movie, Snitch represents a good-faith attempt by Dwayne Johnson to stretch himself as an actor. Johnson became an action star based on his affable, pleasant personality and an intimidating physical presence. Like many action stars, however, Johnson has evidenced a desire to widen out. Thus, he has taken dramatic and comic supporting roles, began appearing in family-friendly movies, and even exposed a darker, more violent side in 2010's Faster, which worked pretty well because the action was propulsive and nearly continuous. In Snitch, Johnson aims to establish himself as a dramatic actor, with a minimum of action heroics. He plays John Matthews, the owner of a successful construction company...

Megan Fox Is This Generation's April O'Neil

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 06:12 PM PST

The Michael Bay produced, Jonathan Liebsman directed version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is still happening. Dear God, it is still happening...The proof that all our nightmares are in fact coming very, very true is that casting is now underway... although in this case perhaps it is someone's dream coming true as Bay confirmed via his Twitter and Blog earlier today that Megan Fox will be this generation's April O'Neil. Yes, yes, I'm sure plenty of you are now wondering if she will be wearing that banana-yellow suit from the 80s cartoon. Well, don't put it past them. Being a pretty diehard Turtle fan and all, you can tell I am over the moon for this project. Hardy har har. So what's the rub you...

FEAR & LOATHING @ YUBARI INTERNATIONAL FANTASTIC FILM FESTIVAL: Prologue, Leaving Madame Butterfly

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 03:00 PM PST

DISCLAIMER: Before I begin this story, I should probably say upfront, I'm an asshole. I've only come to this realization fairly recently. I don't wish to be an asshole. In fact, I've always believed that I had spent my life making great strides in being a good person, a good person who's good to others. I've always made conscious and deliberate efforts to be friendly, accepting, cordial, and gracious. I've always taken pride in my genuine sincerity towards my passions and feelings for others. I've always worked hard to make friends, and I value those friendships that I do have. But I'm paranoid, I'm overly emotional, I'm delusional, I'm manic, I'm crazy, and I have a violent, unyielding temper. I'm probably more dangerous than I...

Film Comment Selects 2013 Review: SIMON KILLER is An American Sociopath's Last Tango in Paris

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 02:00 PM PST

From Borderline films, the trio of producer/directors responsible for indie darling Martha Marcy May Marlene, comes the uplifting story of an American in Paris who finds solace in the thighs of a young prostitute. Simon is his name and killing is NOT his game, though it may very well someday be. Similarities aside, this is no Tango and there's nary a stick of butter, but there is role-reversal and there are thumbs. And betrayal and heartache and violence and possibly VD. Fun! Simon Killer is the second feature from Afterschool director Antonio Campos and continues in that film's dark tradition. It takes the tired "white kid goes to Europe, finds love and/or cultural enlightenment" premise and turns it on its head. It then stomps that...

Ewan McGregor's SON OF A GUN Under Fire, Accused Of Racial Bias In Casting

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 01:01 PM PST

Note to casting agents and producers: Be very, very careful about how you phrase casting calls. The producers of Son of a Gun have come under fire after issuing a casting call that appeared to be racially biased, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. The call for extras was apparently too specific: For the hired muscle, the producers wanted "Australian, Italian and European gang member/organised crime types". For the prisoners, they were "mainly looking for Aboriginal, Islander, Maori and Middle Eastern males", though there was room too for "tough-looking guys of other nationalities". Gary Paramanathan, director of the Colourfest Film Festival, which focuses on "migrant and diasporic" stories, objected: "I understand the characters were written this way and the casting director was just following instructions,...

Watch The First Trailer For Shinkai's THE GARDEN OF WORDS

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 11:00 AM PST

Japanese animator Shinkai Makoto has earned a loyal following around the world with his sensitive tales of love and loss. And while many fans felt somewhat disappointed by what felt like a deliberate - and only moderately effective - turn towards the Ghibli-style mainstream with his most recent effort, Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below, he seems to be operating back within his wheelhouse with the upcoming The Garden Of Words.Takao, who is training to become a shoemaker, skipped school and is sketching shoes in a Japanese-style garden. He meets a mysterious woman, Yukino, who is older than him. Then, without arranging the times, the two start to see each other again and again, but only on rainy days. They deepen their relationship...

Aksel Hennie Joins Ratner's HERCULES

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 09:00 AM PST

Aksel Hennie is going Hollywood. We've been vocal fans of the Norwegian star here at Twitch since first coming across him in a pair of 2004 films - Uno and Hawaii, Oslo - and have tracked his career with great interest ever since. And with massive Norwegian hits such as Max Manus and Headhunters now under his belt - both of which also secured major international attention - it comes as no surprise that Hennie is casting his eye farther afield. Hennie has just joined the cast of Brett Ratner's Hercules, in which he will star opposite Dwayne Johnson as Tydeus - an axe wielding warrior so crazed he needs to be chained at night while he sleeps. Is a Ratner action film the way I'd...

India's VISHWAROOPAM Gets Muted By Malaysia

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 08:00 AM PST

Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam is returning to cinemas in Malaysia -- but only after muting brief sections of the film that disturbed some Muslim viewers. The film was yanked from Malaysian theaters the day after it opened on January 25, even though it had been approved by the Film Censorship Board (LPF). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the LPF acted in response to "letters of protest filed by the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (Kimma) and the Federation of Malaysian Indian Muslim Associations (Permim) complaining of religious insensitivity, Following a series of reviews with participation from Kimma and Permim, LPF chairman Raja Azahar said in a statement: 'The approval is given with the condition that the distributor agrees to additional cuts to the movie." The censorship is...

Review: Brian De Palma Gets Out A Mixed-Bag Of Old Tricks For PASSION

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 06:00 AM PST

After the experimental political polemic Redacted and the gun-for-hire mess The Black Dahlia, Brian De Palma has returned to what should be his comfort zone; a violent, erotic thriller which he actually wrote himself. In fact, every scene of Passion seems to beg for a collective "return to form" proclamation. It's got identical twins, split-screen, sumptuous ballet, labyrinthine dream sequences and obsession to spare, but ultimately, it still feels like an over-the-hill rocker playing all his hits from forty years ago. On one hand, everything lacks the energy that originally made it so powerful, but, on the other hand, the songs are still better than anything else written in the last decade. That is to say, the Passion is great fun, and occasionally kinda brilliant,...
