IFFR 2013 Review: LONGING FOR THE RAIN Gives An Unflinching Look At Sexual Desire Posted: 15 Feb 2013 04:15 PM PST (Apparently, rainy nights make for wet dreaming...) Despite the reputation of the International Film Festival Rotterdam for being one of the main portals to Asian cinema, this year there weren't many films from China. What was there was pretty special, though, like Johnnie To's Drug War or Yang Lina's Tiger Award-nominated Longing For The Rain, both films being shot by Hong Kong directors in Mainland China. But where Drug War is called a Mainland film and will be received with open arms over there, I would be very surprised if Yang Lina's film about female sexual urges will get a showing anywhere in Mainland China within the next decade. And with THAT subject matter, you can guess why. Because Longing For The Rain is erotically... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Berlinale 2013 Review: VIC + FLO SAW A BEAR Is Bold, Strange And Surprisingly Dull Posted: 15 Feb 2013 01:00 PM PST As the title suggests, Vic + Flo Saw a Bear is a determinedly strange, offbeat film. It's like a juggler with a dozen balls who keeps going, completely indifferent to the fact that he's dropping balls left and right. Of course, in this case, director Denis Côté is tossing around genres, moods, tones and even different versions of reality. While certain moments are a pleasure to behold on their own, Côté lacks the balance and cohesion to really make all of his disparate ideas connect, settling instead for jarring tonal and stylistic shifts that aren't nearly as radical as Côté seems to think they are. The film opens with a static shot of a boy in a scout uniform playing an awful number on the... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: THE BALLAD OF NARAYAMA, Kinoshita Keisuke's Parable Of Age Posted: 15 Feb 2013 12:00 PM PST The Ballad of Narayama (1958) is the first film of Japanese director Kinoshita Keisuke's season as part of the Melbourne Cinematheque program. Running from February 13-27, his retrospective of conservative post-war films highlights a Japan in crisis, but through expertly mixing different genres he voids an iconoclastic approach, instead favoring traditionalism in a modernist setting, despite what effects that has on the society. The Ballad of Narayama is essentially a parable of age. This sharp melodrama tells the story of a remote village in Japan's feudal period. With a drastic food shortage on their hands, a cruel but logical edict states that anyone who turns 70 is expected to be carried by a relative to the top of Mount Narayama to perish. The remarkable Tanaka Kinuyo... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Paul Schrader's THE CANYONS Bravely Acquired By IFC Films Posted: 15 Feb 2013 11:30 AM PST Lindsay Lohan! A male porn star! The guy who wrote American Psycho! The guy who wrote Taxi Driver! Bad behavior on the set! Truly terrible teasers! Rejection by Sundance and SXSW! Just how bad is Paul Schrader's The Canyons? Maybe not so bad after all. IFC Films has acquired North American rights, and plans to release it in early summer, day-and-date and on digital platforms, according to their press release. And they're launching it in style, with a special presentation at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Kent Jones, director of programming for the New York Film Festival, will host a post-screening conversation with Schrader, and his comments on the film are included in the press release: "On one level, The Canyons is a visually... Review: MAN ON EDGE, Shaman By Day, Gangster By Night Posted: 15 Feb 2013 11:00 AM PST The gangster comedy, once one of the biggest money-spinners in the Korean film industry, has fallen out of favor recently. Truth is, most high concept comedies struggle in the Korean marketplace these days. What is it about the mix between gangsters and comedy (frequently romantic comedy) that has so enticed Korean viewers? In a male-driven country dominated by social hierarchy, it could be that the infantilization of these hoodlums was a welcome source of respite within the safe confines of the country's multiplexes. The first major Korean release of 2013 is also a gangster comedy, but there is one crucial difference. Another big element has been tossed into the pot: shamanism. Unlike gangster tropes, here comes something that is particularly Korean. It seems to have... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Michael Mann And Chris Hemsworth Aim To Thrill With Cyber Threats Posted: 15 Feb 2013 10:30 AM PST Michael Mann will soon be directing his first feature since 2009's Public Enemies, and he's bringing Thor (AKA Chris Hemsworth) with him, according to Variety. Described as a thriller set in "a world of cyber threats and attacks," the project has been in development for more than a year, with Mann co-writing the script with Morgan Davis Foehl. Production is slated to begin in June. That fits into Hemsworth's schedule, which suddenly opened up when Steven Spielberg decided to delay production on Robopocalypse for at least six to eight months. Mann has kept busy developing and producing various projects, including HBO's Luck with David Milch; Mann directed the pilot episode for the series, whose run was cut short. He's always made films with a stylish,... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Calling All Francophiles: Short Film C'EST LA VIE Is Your Dream Come True Posted: 15 Feb 2013 10:00 AM PST Here's a lush, breezy short film that shows what happens when every single aspect of life receives "the French touch." That means "eau de toilette" and croissants in the morning, quirky threesomes in the afternoon and art films at night. As someone who lives in Paris, I was amused by how many cliches about the French are still relatively true, even when pushed to this extreme. The only thing I'd respectfully disagree with is the part where the lead character goes to the gym. French women generally prefer cigarettes and small portions to maintain their figure, and there are barely any gyms in Paris. Still, it all sounds romantic, right? Well, It is... to a point. But, as C'est La Vie slowly reveals, even the... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
STAR WARS: Harrison Ford Rumored To Return As Han Solo Posted: 15 Feb 2013 09:20 AM PST Harrison Ford was previously said to be "open" to the idea of returning as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII, and now a new rumor claims that he's locked and loaded for the picture. The report in November 2012 indicated that Ford wouldn't "go to the next level of contract talks until there's a script and director in place. Either could be a deal breaker." Since then, Michael Arndt has been announced as the writer and J.J. Abrams as director. Ford's professional relationship with Abrams tracks back as far as 1991's Regarding Henry, which Abrams wrote; Abrams also served as a producer on 2010's Morning Glory. Next, I suppose we can expect more rumors about Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher ...... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

So with this footage Alcazar also created a proper documentary, Tapia, about the man. It would turn out to be the last interview Tapia would ever give before he died at the age of 45 in May of 2012. In this second clip provided by the filmmaker, Tapia explains the tattoos that adorn his body. ... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Koldo Serra to Helm Spanish Civil War Film GERNIKA Posted: 15 Feb 2013 08:11 AM PST One of Pablo Picasso's most famous works is 'Guernica,' a painting about a town of the same name that was bombed by the Nazis during the Spanish Civil War. Now the story of that tragedy is being brought to the screen by director Koldo Serra (The Backwoods).According to an article in Spanish newspaper El País, the story will centre on two American journalists covering the war. While not the worst of bombings by outsiders, it is the most famous, largely because of Picasso's painting. No doubt there is a great potential audience, not only amongst Serra's fans, but also among art fans who know little about the story behind the painting. It's been a while since Serra's work has been seen on the big screen. His... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Choi Min-sik (Oldboy, Nameless Gangster) stars as a gruff police captain who sends an agent (Lee Jeong-jae, The Thieves) undercover into the country's biggest crime syndicate. However, he soon finds himself with split loyalties when the gang's number two (Hwang Jeong-min, A Bittersweet Life) takes a shine to him.New World is directed by Park Hoon-jeong, who is signing his second feature following the period wartime chamber piece The Showdown. However, Park is better known as the writer behind Ryoo Seung-wan's The Unjust and Kim Jee-woon's I Saw the Devil.
