TV Review: COMMUNITY S4E02, Paranormal Parentage (Or, A Visit To Pierce's Mansion On Halloween Proves Hollow)

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 08:15 PM PST

Bad Analogy time: The second episode of this season's Community is like wearing a new pair of jeans for the second time... once they've been washed. They are now not as stiff, a bit more comfortable, but you're not 100% sure if you'd wear these jeans to work or on a date. These are weekend jeans. In someway or another it seems fitting that the Halloween episode (which was originally supposed to air around that time of year before the season was delayed) ends up airing on Valentine's Day. With Community always uprooting, frowning upon, and then ultimately embracing many a sitcom trope, it feels like a very nice accidental gift for it to stick it to one silly holiday with another. It is unfortunate then...

Exclusive: Roman Coppola Talks CHARLES SWAN, Breakups, And Wes Anderson

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 02:01 PM PST

I had the pleasure a few weeks ago of chatting with Roman Coppola, writer/director of the irritatingly titled A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swann III. This is the first feature from Coppola sitting in the director's chair since 2001's CQ, but he's certainly kept busy, working on the second unit on family productions -- his sister's Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette, his father's Tetro and Youth Without Youth -- as well as helping write and second unit direct more than one project with Wes Anderson. It's Anderson's quirky style that is most hearkened by this film, yet, as I mentioned in my review, it lacks the kind of coherence and sense of satisfaction one gets from Anderson's playful pieces. Still, there's a...

TIFF Next Wave Review: GHOST GRADUATION

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 01:01 PM PST

One of the most charming, silly and rambunctious films of this year's festival, Ghost Graduation (Promoción fantasma) is an unabashed love letter to the cinema of John Hughes, mixed in with bits of The Frighteners or Ghostbusters for good measure. The film starts, as most should, with the thumping melodrama of Bonnie Tyler's epic "Total Eclipse of the Heart." We see a wallflower boy sitting at the edges of the crowd during a slow dance. Soon the crowd parts, and he sees his dream girl, hair flowing in slow motion driven by some magical breeze. He reaches towards her, the two embrace, their orthodontically-augmented teeth clinking as they kiss. We then cut to see that he's embracing nothing but air, with entire rows of fellow...

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 12:32 PM PST

There is yet to be an official announcement about the cast and production details, but Twitch has learned that David Hewlett, probably most widely known around the world as Dr. Rodney McKay from the Stargate television franchise, is prepping his second feature film. Plans are for it to be shot here in Toronto. He will be directing his own screenplay, Debug. Here's what we know of the premise:Six young computer hackers, sent to work on a derelict space freighter, are forced to match wits with a vengeful artificial intelligence that would kill to be human.  Ooh. Review: Say Yes to NO

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 12:01 PM PST

I assume you're well-versed in Chilean politics of the 1980s. I mean, who isn't, right? But even if you're not -- even if you're, say, an American who barely recalls the name Pinochet and is already exhausted by the 2012 U.S. elections -- Pablo Larraín's NO is a fascinating, inventive look at the advertising campaign that helped unseat Chile's dictator in 1988. What happens in NO isn't substantially different from what happens in every election year in every country. Which is to say, it's absurd, funny, and a little sad. NO was made for a Chilean audience, but Larraín is careful to summarize the pertinent facts for the rest of us (and, I suppose, for Chileans who weren't alive or weren't paying attention in 1988)....

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 11:30 AM PST

Here is today's dose of kink from Japan: Actress and Gravure Idol Mitsu Dan is starring in Ishii Takashi's upcoming S&M-themed film Amai Muchi. The movie is an adaptation of Oshi Kei's novel and is being released on the 20th anniversary of that book's first release in the series Kadokawa Horror Bunko. The film will be released in Japan in September. So what is it all about? Glad you asked...Dan will play a 31-year-old woman named Naoko who leads a double life. While in high school, Naoko was kidnapped by a male neighbour and kept in captivity for a month before she barely managed to escape by killing him. Review: LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE Casts A Mysterious, Unsettling Spell In Tokyo

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 11:00 AM PST

Like Someone in Love, the gorgeous, deeply mysterious and unsettling new film by Abbas Kiarostami, continues his return to narrative filmmaking, which began with Certified Copy, the Italy-set feature that marked his first outside his native Iran. Kiarostami's latest, which can be seen as a companion piece, is set in Tokyo, and like Certified Copy, transforms its adopted setting into a rich environment where his cinematic gifts are evident in ways that rival some of his Iranian masterpieces, such as Close-Up, Through the Olive Trees, and Taste of Cherry. Also like Certified Copy, Kiarostami explores the theme of identities assumed and performed, although in contrast to the more romantically-inclined tone of his previous film, here he introduces an element of volatile instability, leading to a...

First Details From New Sono Sion Pic WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL?

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 10:30 AM PST

The first announcement about Sono Sion's next flick, Why Don't You Play in Hell?, has surfaced in Japan. Two things: (1) We are always excited about any new Sono Sion flick. (2)  We do not speak a lick of Japanese, so we enlisted the help of one of our friends with strong ties to the Japanese film industry, who has harnessed the power of the Japanese language, to translate/paraphrase the article for us. And because Google Translate, though quite funny at times, makes our eyes bleed when attempting to translate some languages.  WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL? (Jigoku de naze warui?), the latest film from director Sion Sono, is finally set for a September opening! Completely outrageous trailer video also now available to watch!...

We Are All The Same: Abbas Kiarostami Interview

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 10:01 AM PST

In my short career as a film journalist/blogger, I have been lucky enough to interview some of my idols over the years -- Claire Denis, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Michael Haneke and John Sayles among them. But no one (not even Haneke!) made me as nervous as I was when I sat down for a round table interview with the master Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami at last year's New York Film Festival. What could you possibly ask an artist who is infinitely wiser than you (not that others aren't), whose films leave you with awe and admiration, who seems to have figured out what life is about?Having spent all day answering questions, Kiarostami looked tired behind those dark glasses (he has light sensitivity issues). And, unfortunately, our...

Hugh Laurie Could Be The Villain Of TOMORROWLAND

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 09:01 AM PST

British actor Hugh Laurie is in talks to take the role of villain in Disney's super top-secret sci-fi flick Tomorrowland, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project stars George Clooney and will be directed by Brad Bird. The script was penned by Damon Lindelof (Star Trek Into Darkness, Prometheus and Lost) and Jeff Jensen, an editor at Entertainment Weekly. The plot of the movie project, which until a couple of weeks ago was being called 1952, is under lock and key, though it has been described as being in the vein of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Steven Spielberg's 1978 movie about a man searching for extra-terrestrials on Earth.Even the idea of Laurie playing a villain excites me. Clooney is, well, Clooney. Brad Bird did a decent job in...

Children Are So Scary, Claims New COME OUT AND PLAY Trailer

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 08:31 AM PST

Remaking a classic horror movie, even when it's little-known among the general populace, is always a dicey proposition, simply because people who love the original really, really love the original, and woe betide the filmmaker who doesn't make good choices in a new version. Directed by the single-named Makinov ,Come Out and Play is based on Who Can Kill a Child? (1976); as in the original, a married couple (Vinessa Shaw and Ebon Moss-Bachrach) arrive at a lovely vacation spot, hoping to enjoy a peaceful respite before the lady gives birth, only to discover that their imagined paradise is filled with murderous children. When it debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, our own Kurt Halfyard was not impressed: When you remake these...

Teaser For Filipino Horror Film SAPI From Arthouse Director Brillante Mendoza

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 08:00 AM PST

To this point, Filipino director Brillante Mendoza has had worldwide success as an arthouse film director. His last film, The Womb, picked up a slew of awards on the festival circuit. Now, though, Mendoza is taking a trip off his beaten path and directing his first ever horror film, Sapi. In the first teaser for the horror-thriller "Sapi," actor Dennis Trillo is seen as a journalist covering what appears to be students being "possessed by evil spirits." Trillo's character is accompanied by two others, played by Baron Geisler and Meryll Soriano, in documenting other paranormal activities. You can take the director out of the arthouse but you cannot take the arthouse out of the director. So far, all seems very interesting, then intense. And Mendoza still maintains a...

Paramount Picks Up Mason/Boyes Penned Sci-Fi Flick EQUINOX

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 07:30 AM PST

We have been longtime supporters of the work of Adam Mason and Simon Boyes, even hosting their podcast when the lads first moved to big, scary L.A. to further their film careers. The duo have been near inseparable, Paramount Pictures has optioned their next script, a sci-fi pic titled Equinox. There are no details given about the script but sources describe the project as "Dead Calm in space."For those of you keeping score at home, this is the second Dead Calm reference to a project in as many days. Last week, we announced the project A Distant Shore, which was described as being in the same vein as the 1989 film. So. Washing Nicole Kidman's hair has had more of a lingering effect then I first believed. ...

Review: SAFE HAVEN Adds Another Bland Mess to the Nicholas Sparks Rap Sheet

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 07:01 AM PST

Oh, sure, it's popular to make fun of Nicholas Sparks movies. It's very "cool" and "trendy" to pile on the insults every time a new one is released, three or four times a year. But do you want to know the real reason why they're held up to such ridicule? Because they're bad, that's why. What did you think? They do range in quality, but even the best of them, like The Notebook and Nights in Rodanthe, are only mediocre. At the other end of the spectrum is Safe Haven, a wholly inert lump of by-the-numbers syrup that's as boring as it is pointless. A person who has never read any of Sparks' novels (like me) is left to assume that he deals only in...

Hey, Toronto! Nikkatsu Aims For The Funny Bone With THE SUN IN THE LAST DAYS OF THE SHOGUNATE! Win Tickets Now!

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 06:30 AM PST

The Twitch curated Tokyo Drifters: 100 Years Of Nikkatsu screening series leaves the criminal fare behind at the TIFF Bell Lightbox this Saturday with a rare screening of hugely acclaimed classic comedy The Sun In The Last Days Of The Shogunate, screening on 35mm from a freshly restored print. Voted the fifth best Japanese film of all time by the prestigious Kinema Junpo magazine the film features a script co-written by a young Shohei Imamura along with his mentor, the overlooked-in-the-west master, Kawashima Yuzo who also directs.Though Nikkatsu was and is best known for its crime and action films, the studio's output was far more diverse, as attested to by this riotous comedy from director Yuzo Kawashima, which was voted the fifth best Japanese film...

Romance And The Eating Habits Of Gorillas: Josh Duhamel, Julianne Hough And Nicholas Sparks Talk SAFE HAVEN

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 06:01 AM PST

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of moderating a Q&A with Safe Haven stars Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough, along with author Nicholas Sparks, when they stopped in Dallas. The next day I sat down with Duhamel and Hough to chat about the film one on one, without a crowd of crying teenage girls and book worms (for the record, it was a pretty fun Q&A). Watch the interview below to see the pair discuss why the film was a challenge they were both willing to take on at this point in their careers. And to see me and Duhamel nerd out when his costar unknowingly references Transformers -- a moment we most definitely did not let her get by with. Oh, and...
