Baz Luhrmann's THE GREAT GATSBY To Open The 2013 Cannes Film Festival

Baz Luhrmann's THE GREAT GATSBY To Open The 2013 Cannes Film Festival

Posted: 12 Mar 2013 12:30 AM PDT

With the exception of his bawdy, brash musical Moulin Rouge, I'm a Baz Lurhmann tragic. Strictly Ballroom is one of my favourite movies and even Australia has a certain charm, if you let it wear you down to its level. So I've been on board the Baz Luhrmann-Great Gatsby train from day one, even declaring to all and sundry that this was the film he was born to make.So it's very exciting to hear the (probably inevitable) confirmation that The Great Gatsby will not only play but open the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, marking Luhrmann's third turn at the prestigious festival, following Ballroom and Rouge in previous years.Of course, as everyone who studied the book in school would know, Gatsby is the masterpiece novel of...

SXSW 2013: Drafthouse Films Adds Some CHEAP THRILLS To Its Roster!

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 09:45 PM PDT

Hot off its World Premiere during the midnight screening on March 9th the U.S. distribution rights for the comedy thriller Cheap Thrills has been picked up by Drafthouse Films and Snoot Entertainment. The film was produced by Snowfort Pictures, who have such films as The Aggression Scale, Jodorowsky's Dune and also comes to the fest with Big Ass Spider! New Artists Alliance also produced the flick; another project of theirs, Milo, is also having its World Premiere at the fest. Recently fired and facing eviction, a new dad has his life turned upside down when he meets a wealthy couple who offer a path to financial security... but at a price.  I would add a quote from Peter's review of the film but as you can read below he is already...

SXSW 2013: BIG ASS SPIDER Clip Will Melt Your Face Off!

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 09:15 PM PDT

There is an expression in the world of Metal music called 'The Face Melter'. It is when you get a heavy metal solo that is so awesome and powerful, it causes one's face to melt. You will not find any Heavy Metal music in this Premiere Day clip from creature feature Big Ass Spider but the effect ends up being the same. Maybe not for you, the viewer, but at least someone goes all Arnold Toht in it. Watch and see for yourself.  ...

SXSW 2013: REWIND THIS! U.S. Rights Go To CRM!

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 08:30 PM PDT

Already one of the buzz titles after its World Premiere today at SXSW, the VHS documentary Rewind This! will be represented in the U.S. by Cinetic Rights Management. The deal was helped along by our good friend Stephanie Trepanier of Evokative Films who took her boutique distribution label and transformed her company into an international sales consultancy. CRM provides film sales representation for digital media. For example, the company is an Apple-approved digital content aggregator for the iTunes store. They also boast access to other digital distribution platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, Xbox, Playstation and Cinemanow. By the way, in case you're interested, Stephanie is also representing Chelsea Peters' debut, the slasher film The Night Stalkers, and, AND, Spring, the supernatural romance-horror film and sophomore effort from...

SXSW 2013 Review: WHITE REINDEER Decks the Halls with Boughs of Hilarious

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 05:30 PM PDT

Not every Christmas can be a merry one, but the punishment Zach Clark puts his protagonist Suzanne (Anna Margaret Hollyman) through in his third feature outing White Reindeer gives a whole new meaning to bah humbug. Luckily, Clark infuses a genuine tenderness in his black comedy that allows us to fall in love with Suzanne, without suffering the pains of her particular misfortune. White Reindeer is a wonderfully crafted film that's both full of laughs and full of heart. The film begins with Suzanne in full Christmas cheer. Working as a real estate agent, it becomes quickly obvious that White Reindeer isn't a typical holiday film when Suzanne shows a home to a nice couple George and Patti (Joe Swanberg and Lydia Hyslop) who...

James Frecheville Joins Tom Hardy In Michael Roskam's BULLHEAD Follow-up

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 04:32 PM PDT

David Michôd's golden goose that was Animal Kingdom keeps paying dividends for all its stars. Animal Kingdom lead James Frecheville followed-up that crime thriller by playing a young toyboy in Sundance cougar-romance Two Mothers, and now comes news that he'll be joining Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace in Animal Rescue - the next film from Bullhead director Michael Roskam. Twitch are huge fans of Bullhead, and have previously reported that Roskam was prepping a noir thriller called The Faithful as his next. But as is the way of filmmaking, it looks like Animal Rescue has pipped that at the post. In any case, we're looking forward to seeing what new tricks Roskam pulls from his magic suitcase. He's certainly building an interesting cast for it....

SXSW 2013 First Impression: REWIND THIS! Spreads the Cinematic Love Past the Living Room

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 02:49 PM PDT

Director Josh Johnson and producer Carolee Mitchell's VHS docu Rewind This! is every bit the love letter to the mostly forgotten format that we've been promised, but there is plenty more than just nostalgia here as well. This is just as much about the love of cinema as fondness for a particular format. On top of that, it's a really funny movie and a damn entertaining time capsule of our world of media at this particular time. The film is packed with familiar faces, from Hobo with a Shotgun director Jason Eisener to Twitch's own Editor-in-Chief Todd Brown (I'm pretty sure Todd had a particular line included just for the bombastic pronunciation of "about"). The good folks at Alamo Drafthouse play a particularly large role...

SXSW 2013 Review: PLUS ONE Invites Sci-Fi to a College Party

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 02:00 PM PDT

A high-level sci-fi concept, a raucous college party, and a desperate attempt at romantic reconciliation mix uneasily in Dennis Iliadis' Plus One, a movie whose worthy ambitions largely outstrip its execution. Disguising the first act of the movie as a straightforward young-adult love story is a winsome idea. In practice, though, the resemblance in structure and characters to dozens of other similar tales does nothing to build anticipation for the inevitable twists, and the film struggles to maintain momentum. In short, we can't hardly wait for the sci-fi concept to take hold. When it does, however, the second act of the movie is then spent explaining and slowly exploring that; it's only in the third act that everything finally ramps up. Ashley Hinshaw and Natalie...

BERSERK: THE EGG OF THE KING Hits Blu-ray And DVD In Australia

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Berserk: The Egg of the King is part of the Golden Age Arc trilogy of Berserk feature-length films encapsulating the best of the original anime and manga series. The first film which played as part of Madman's Reel Anime film festival last year has just hit Blu-ray. Here is what our correspondent Hugo had to say about the film.Berserk: The Egg of the King offers a great start to the film trilogy that is to be based on the popular manga and anime series Berserk. This faithful film adaptation should please both fans and newcomers alike with its massive battles, bloody fights and intriguing story-lines surrounding the compelling characters. It is quite simply one of the best animated action films of recent years. Having seen it, I can certainly back...

DVD Review: PRINCESS JELLYFISH Exhibits Other Kinds Of Otaku

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 11:00 AM PDT

(Me, I'm not an Otaku, I just collect stuff fanatically...) By now you just need to mention noitanimA and my ears will prick up. Over the past few years there have been so many interesting anime series aired in Fuji television's famed noitaminA slot that it has become some sort of a badge of merit, urging me to check out series I otherwise would not have. Like Princess Jellyfish, a quirky romantic comedy based around otaku girls and crossdressing boys. Wait, what? It's really, really great though. And this month, Siren Visual releases Princess Jellyfish on DVD, while this title has been out in Europe and the US already. Time for a review! The Story: Tsukimi is a shy, withdrawn 18-year-old girl who really likes...

Mathis Landwehr Brings The Steampunk Martial Arts With LAND OF GIANTS

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 10:30 AM PDT

Though you may not know his name there's a passably good chance you've witnessed German martial artist Mathis Landwehr in action. Based in Berlin, Landwehr caught the eye of the Wachowskis sometime back and put in work as a key stunt performer on both V For Vendetta and Speed Racer. We'd been talking about him prior to that in these pages, though, thanks to his work in indie action flick Kampfensage and again raved over his work in stellar short film Kingz. Landwehr is one of our favorites, basically, and we've been waiting years now for him to get his break on the big screen. Because while the stuff he's been doing on TV is fine and all - and certainly pays his bills -...

Get a Glimpse Behind the Scenes of IP MAN: FINAL FIGHT

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 10:00 AM PDT

It is only a matter of a few days now until the 37th Hong Kong International Film Festival gets underway, with Herman Yau's Ip Man: Final Fight opening proceedings on Sunday 17 March. Starring Anthony Wong as the legendary wing chun practitioner, and Eric Tsang as his foe, the film is unlikely to top the giddy action heights of the recent Donnie Yen/Wilson Yip efforts, but I'm still excited. Yau's last entry in this booming fad of Ip Man movies, The Legend Is Born: Ip Man was actually one of the better efforts, despite its modest budget. Here Wong plays the martial artist in his twilight years, living in Hong Kong as it recovers from the Japanese occupation, who is forced into a final confrontation with...

Jesus Got a Gun in First Trailer for Álex de la Iglesia's WITCHING AND BITCHING

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 09:40 AM PDT

It seems rather appropriate that on the day I'm redrafting my thesis chapter on The Day of the Beast, the first trailer for mad maverick Álex de la Iglesia's new film should be released. I've always been pretty impressed at how de la Iglesia has continued to carve his own path, only lightly dipping his toe in more commercial fare once or twice, but pretty much sticking to his metaphorical guns on insanity, violence, and strong political commentary in his work. The trailer for Witching and Bitching looks like delightful, bloody and outrageous fun.Hugo Silva and Mario Casas (both currently very hot properties in the Spanish film market) play two hapless thieves, whose plan to rob a jewellery store unravels quickly when they have to...

Review: Chris Martinez's I DO BIDOO BIDOO Is A Musical Crafted For Erstwhile Pleasures

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Chris Martinez's I Do Bidoo Bidoo is a film whose acclaim is more a product of sentiment than cinematic merit. Its plot is characterized by clichés. Its charm is but a product of nostalgia and novelty. It contents itself in reaping the rewards of its sheer existence, unwilling to push the envelope and to explore areas outside acknowledged comfort zones. It is the kind of crowd-pleaser that is satisfied to exist for the current clamor of a crowd whose addiction to anything from the past has turned into something that resembles more a fad than anything else. It is quite unfortunate, really. Martinez is perhaps one of the more consistent and reliable screenwriters actively working today. He not only has a gift for humor that...

Review: DIRTY BLOOD Serves Up Its Revenge Tale with a Twist

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 05:30 AM PDT

Originally seen during the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) 2012 As a society Korea has been slow to change despite its economic growth. At times it can seem like a gigantic, perpetually simmering pot of discontent that seems dangerously close to boiling over. One aspect of Korean society that is often brushed under the carpet is repressed sexuality and while it isn't something you will encounter much in TV dramas, music and the news, the Korean film industry, of late, has been vocal in its depiction of the widespread abuse that rages through the country. Truth be told, it is often used opportunistically and many of the works in question tread a very fine line. Dirty Blood is one such film that exists in...

Get Behind The Scenes With Johnny Nguyen In CHO LON

Posted: 11 Mar 2013 05:00 AM PDT

See that man with the knife? That's Johnny Nguyen, one of only two people on the face of the planet to have fought both Jet Li and Tony Jaa on screen. He's not only lived to tell the tale, he's also one of the most badass screen fighters in the world and has been steadily building a loyal following around the globe setting up shop in Vietnam and strutting his stuff there. The Rebel - directed by Nguyen's brother, Charlie - kicked things off, Clash proved it wasn't a fluke and now they're upping their game with Bui Doi Cho Lon.We ran the first fantastic trailer for this a few weeks back and now that has been followed with a behind the scenes reel that...
