Chow Yun Fat And Liam Neeson To Star In U.S./China Co-Production TRAGEDY OF THE CHINESE LABORERS

With Hollywood's ever growing interest in tapping into China's lucrative box office market, it comes as no surprise that 20th Century Fox has partnered up with China Film Group to produce Tragedy of the Chinese Laborers (華工血淚史), a historical film starring Chow Yun Fat and Liam Neeson as immigrant workers constructing the California Union Pacific Railroad in 19th century America.Back in the 80's, Taiwanese director King Hu wanted to film a story based on the struggles of the 19th century Chinese railway workers in the United States. However, the film was met with funding issues and was eventually abandon after Hu passed away.  In 2005, Fox bought the rights and sought Liam Neeson for a role.  The film was put on hold due to lack...

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 06:15 PM PST

Don't go looking for a Hotline Miami movie right out the gate--right now, Austin-based Devolver is simply looking to get their feet wet with distributing some promising indies based on their experience promoting promising indie games. Posted: 06 Mar 2013 03:00 PM PST

Writer.  Filmmaker. Gun-owner.  And all around bad-ass, John Milius, is the man who is responsible in part for the Dirty Harry franchise, Apocalypse Now, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, 1941, Conan The Barbarian, Red Dawn and HBO's Rome.  He was rumoured to have pulled a piece on a film executive and is the direct inspiration for the Coen Brother's Walter Sobchak character ("MARK IT ZERO!"). Furthermore, he came up with the idea for the OCTAGON-shaped ring in UFC combat, wrote dialogue for the Quint character in Jaws, and a gave folks like Robert Zemeckis and Paul Schrader a leg up in the business when they were starting out.Making its debut at the SXSW festival this week is the documentary from Joey Figueroa and...

Tribeca 2013: Spotlight And Midnight Sections Announced, RABIES Directors' Next BIG BAD WOLVES Set To Premiere

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 02:00 PM PST

Yesterday we brought you word of the 12th Annual Tribeca Film Festival's World Narrative and World Documentary Competition films, plus the always intriguing Viewpoints section. Today we've got wind of their crackling Midnight lineup, Spotlight films, the Special Screenings, and something I think that could be very cool, their new transmedia section entitled Storyscapes. the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival runs April 17th - 28th across Manhattan. First, let's dig into the Midnight films. You may recall a section over the last few years called Cinemania, which was for all intents and purposes the festival's Midnight section. Programmer Cara Cusumano filled me in about this year's retooling, stating, "We don't want there to be this percepton that the late-night films, these genre films, are one thing for...

Review: SAVING GENERAL YANG is Solid with Glimpses of Greatness

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 01:00 PM PST

Journeyman director Ronny Yu (The Bride With White Hair, Fearless) delivers his first film in seven years, a solid if unremarkable retelling of the legendary Yang family, with sporadic visual flourishes but a lightweight script that fails to develop its large roster of characters.Despite being in love with Liulang (Wu Chun), sixth son of revered General Yang (Adam Cheng), the beautiful Princess Chai (Ady An) is betrothed to the son of a rival clan leader. Defying their father's orders, Liulang and his younger brother enter into a duel for the Princess' hand, inadvertently starting a war that will destroy the clan - and much of the kingdom along with it.General Yang is forced into battle, only to find himself cut off and surrounded by enemy...

Do You Dare To Face THE JINN?

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 12:00 PM PST

As any fan of cult cinema will tell you, Turkey has a gloriously trashy history where genre film is concerned. There were entire decades where copyright law simply didn't exist in Turkey and seemingly nothing was off limits, resulting in homegrown heroes and villains and - most notoriously - insanely cheap knock offs of Hollywood blockbusters. It is perhaps because of that history that most filmmakers in Turkey stay far, far away from anything that feels like genre cinema today. Hasan Karacadağ is an exception to that rule. The Jinn (El Cin), his fifth horror feature, hits Turkish screens April 5, further cementing his reputation as Turkey's leading horror director. Karacadağ's films are designed as pure, pulpy entertainment - crowd pleasers that may take some...

STAR WARS Ruminations: The Princess Strikes Back with Carrie Fisher Returning

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 11:30 AM PST

It's becoming less of a surprise, particularly when it became all but assured that Harrison Ford was going to reprise his role, that the other stars from the Original Trilogy would be coming back for one more go with the upcoming Episode 7.Empire is now reporting: "Though no official pronouncements have been made and deals are apparently still being hammered out in the Mos Eisley Cantina, it's looking ever more likely that Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and now Carrie Fisher will return to their iconic Star Wars roles"While speaking to Palm Beach Illustrated (always a font of movie news, no?) she gave her most clear indication yet that, yes, she'll be back on screen.I'm still convinced these will be bookends to the real tale, doubting...

Excellent UK Trailer for Murderous Indie SIMON KILLER

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 11:00 AM PST

Simon Killer, the emotionally compelling and visually stunning new film from Afterschool director Antonio Campos, is coming to UK screens this April, courtesy of Eureka Entertainment. The film debuted at Sundance last year, where it collected a horde of positive buzz for its chilling portrayal of a serial killer-in-the-making. Brady Corbet (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Melancholia) stars as the titular anti-hero, who heads to Europe after graduation, leaving behind a messy break-up, and hoping for a summer of exploration and adventure. In Paris he meets and falls in love with a mysterious prostitute (Mati Diop - 35 Shots of Rum), which sparks a downward spiral that eventually leads to murder. Simon Killer will open in the UK nationwide on 12 April, followed by a Blu-ray/DVD...

Denmark Gets Gritty In First Trailer For Crime Drama NORTHWEST (NORDVEST)

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 10:30 AM PST

There's some new blood on the scene in Denmark, talented filmmakers making a mark in the local - and international - scene not by changing what Danish film is best known for so much as doing what it does so well within new contexts. By which I mean this. Denmark has long been known for embracing challenging social realism in their films and this new generation is not abandoning that in any way but following that same path into some new, darker territory. The best known examples of this trend are Tobias Lindholm and Michael Noer, who in 2010 co-directed gritty prison drama R. Lindholm comes from something of a television oriented background, serving as a key writer on political drama Borgen (The Castle) and also...

The Stack March Episode One: WESTWORLD Finally Hits Blu, Plus ELM STREET Films, SCHINDLER'S LIST, PHANTASM II, And More

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 10:00 AM PST

Welcome Back to The Stack! They say March comes in like a lion and in this case I'm inclined to agree. This turned out to be one of my most fun months ever. The 70s sci-fi dystopian classic Westworld hit Blu, as did virtually the entire Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise. Shout Factory released From Beyond and Phantasm II Blu SEs. Indomina, though they are sadly going under, still shot me out a copy of the magnificent Holy Motors. I was able to revisit the high hilarity gross out Thou Shall Not Kill...Except!, starring none other than Sam Raimi as a miscast Manson wannabe. Mimesis was a tiny bit of a letdown but ultimately redeemed itself by grabbing the genre and giving it a decent meta-twist. Wreck-It-Ralph, one of...

Lorenzo Bianchini Returns With ACROSS THE RIVER

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 09:00 AM PST

Though scarcely known outside of his native Italy - or even inside it, honestly - writer-director Lorenzo Bianchini remains, to my mind, one of the most intriguing talents in the region. The man simply has a gift for mood and character that results in some truly compelling work regardless of any budget limitations and his 2006 effort Custodes Bestiae and his 2001 offering Lidris Cuadrade Di Tre are personal favorites. All of which adds up to a certain satisfaction coming with the news that Bianchini is now in post on a new feature titled Oltre Il Guado (Across The River). The story revolves around an ethnologist working in the remote woods, trapping animals and mounting cameras on them so that he can monitor their behavior...

Film Comment Selects 2013 Review: CALL GIRL Is Much More Than The Story Of A 14 Year Old Prostitute

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 07:00 AM PST

As a viewer, I like to know as little as possible about a film going in. So when I scan the festival blurbs my eyes are looking for certain key words to jump out and grab my attention (and no, "14 year old" and "prostitute" are not on that list). Sometimes I don't even know what those words are until I see them. In the case of Mikael Marcimain's debut feature, Call Girl, what caught my eye was the phrase "from the 2nd unit director of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." It's not the broadest of descriptors, and one which probably wouldn't mean much to your average movie-goer, but for some reason it spoke to me. And I didn't even love Tinker Tailor. I thought it...

Sam Mendes Not Returning For Bond 24

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 06:30 AM PST

After successfully guiding Skyfall to critical acclaim and huge box office returns around the globe, director Sam Mendes has decided not to return for the next installment of the James Bond franchise. "I have theatre and other commitments, including productions of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and King Lear, that need my complete focus over the next year and beyond," he told Empire Magazine. Mendes expressed the hope to return for a future Bond, and producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are amenable to that idea, stating: "We would have loved to have made the next film with him but completely respect his decision to focus on other projects and hope to have the opportunity to collaborate with him again." Now the question becomes:...

UK Blu-ray Review: DRACULA (1958) Features New Footage And The Version You Need

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 06:00 AM PST

With Dario Argento threatening to release his interpretation of Dracula on the world, it's rather timely that Terence Fisher's seminal 1958 Dracula should be re-released on UK Blu-ray with previously censored scenes now reinstated, making it the most complete version ever released. The Blu-ray (as part of a triple play pack) contains both the BFI's 2007 restoration and Hammer's new 2012 restoration, the latter of which includes some key additional shots dug up from a fire and water damaged Japanese print. Specifically, they expand on two scenes:  Dracula's seduction of Mina and the Count's final sunlight disintegration. The former adds fuel to the fire that Hammer's version was the first explicitly sexualised take on the story, whilst the latter confirms the studio's penchant for pushing...

Rupesh Paul's KAMASUTRA 3D: First Teaser Bares Breasts And Intentions

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 05:15 AM PST

Here we go again.Last summer's big sexy adventure out of India was the disappointingly tepid Jism 2, starring Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone. However, even she, at the mercy of the notoriously sheepish Indian censor board, was forced to keep her clothes on. Well, director Rupesh Paul is determined that no breast shall remain unbared in his new film, the first of a proposed trilogy (!), Kamasutra 3D.Paul, the director of such "classics" as Saint Dracula 3D and My Mother's Laptop, has outlined ambitious plans to release a trio of Kamasutra films. While the first is merely in 3D, he insists that the next chapters will be in 4D and 5D, respectively, thus sating the need to increase the D's on skin flick sequels (think...
