New Trailer for STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS Gives a few Villainous Clues

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 03:30 AM PDT

The new international trailer for Star Trek: Into Darkness reveals a few plot clues, including a bit of the possible origin/motivation of the villain, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Is he Khan? A disgruntled member of Starfleet? A rogue agent? Frankly, I don't care. All I know is that it's being released in the UK on May 10 (May 17 in North America) and I'm counting the days....

Hey Australia, Win This Amazing Anime Prize Pack From HANABEE!

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 03:02 AM PDT

Back in April 2012, Australia's new anime distributor Hanabee had its public launch. At the time, the company's founder Eric Cherry mentioned that he wanted to make the Australian anime market a more interesting one, and I think it is fair to say that was exactly what he has achieved over the past 11 months. What followed the launch was the development of Hanabee's very popular Facebook page, the running of a well-loved special event that was the Toradora! Maid CafĂ©, the launch of the company's website and of course the release of many quality anime titles that cater to the tastes of different anime lovers. To celebrate the first anniversary of Hanabee's public launch, Eric and his team have given Twitch around $1000 worth of great...

First Peek at Pang Ho Cheung's SDU: SEX DUTIES UNIT

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 12:30 AM PDT

Hot off the success of last year's riotous sex comedy Vulgaria, Pang Ho Cheung re-unites with his onscreen alter ego, Chapman To, for SDU: Sex Duties Unit. Centering on Hong Kong's Special Duties Units (essentially the city's answer to SWAT), the film follows one particular team through the ups and downs of both their high-risk jobs, and their more debauched personal lives - with much of the action taking place in the neighbouring sin city that is Macau. The tone here is definitely similar to Pang's previous work, particularly Vulgaria and Men Suddenly in Black and the film, which also stars Shawn Yue and a host of other familiar faces, is scheduled to hit Hong Kong screens this summer. Check out the first teaser below.Synopsis:The Special Duties...

There was an air of mystery surrounding Tuesday night's "Donnie Yen: Super Hero" press conference at Hong Kong Filmart, but all quickly became clear once the actor took to the stage with Media Asia chief, Peter Lam. Together they unveiled their new production company, Super Hero Films, which will be dedicated to making international action films."I wish to incorporate Hollywood technologies into Hong Kong films and introduce more Chinese action stars to the world," FilmBiz Asia quoted Yen as saying, "and breathe new life and create new opportunities for the Hong Kong film industry." New Trailer For TRANCE Confirms That, Hell Yes, It Is No Doubt A Danny Boyle Film!

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 09:00 PM PDT

And I'm talking the dark, brooding, then spastic, crazy upside trickster narratives that got Danny Boyle squarely on the indie map a full two decades ago. Because while Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours have their place (for good or bad) in his oeuvre, there's nothing quite like a Danny Boyle psychological thriller. The new trailer, despite being greenband, plays up this angle to full effect (not even mentioning his Oscar tagged films), and has a snap, crackle and pop that the recent redband cut was never quite able to deliver on if you ask me. Perhaps it's the dubstep, or maybe it's the clever digital glitching (which is also all over that poster to your left), but no matter what, this is oh so clearly...

Get Behind The Scenes With Vidyut Jammwal In COMMANDO - A ONE MAN ARMY

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 03:00 PM PDT

A new action star is rising in Bollywood and his name is Vidyut Jammwal. From his stunt performances to busting out some spectacular moves without the assistance of CGI or cables, the martial artist/model-turned-actor turned many heads when the Commando - A One Man Army trailer debuted back in January, with some action fans comparing him to Tony Jaa and Johnny Tri Nguyen. If there is any doubts on whether or not this guy is the real deal, there is a "Making Of The Action" video to further prove his case.  The verdict? A resounding HELL YES.Vidyut Jammwal plays a special-ops secret agent for the Indian Armed Services. During one of the missions the commando's chopper is shot down & is now behind enemy-lines. From...

Jude Law Bows Out Of JANE GOT A GUN

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 01:30 PM PDT

Just a few short hours after Warrior director Gavin O'Connor came to save the day in the wake of Lynne Ramsay's departure comes more ill news from the set of the Natalie Portman starring and produced western Jane Got A Gun. Deadline once again has the scoop, reporting that Jude Law, who was to star opposite heroine Portman as the villain, has exited the project under the pretense that he specifically signed on to work with Ramsay. What's interesting to note here is that Law only recently came on board the project, replacing Joel Edgerton as the villain with Edgerton subsequently taking over the role of Portman's ex-lover that was left vacant by Michael Fassbender who had to drop the project due to his schedule on...

WARRIOR Director Gavin O'Connor Takes Helm On JANE GOT A GUN

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 11:17 AM PDT

One of the more spectacular and weirder pieces of news this week came from the set of the Natalie Portman/Jude Law starring western Jane Got A Gun. Director Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin) pulled a no-show on day one of shooting (here is that link), and producer Scott Steindorff told the press she was quickly being replaced so the production could continue without much delay. Speculations abound, of course, on the why, what and how, but without any statement yet from Ramsay or her representatives, it's hard to get a clear picture on any of it. Day two of the saga does bring news about the who. As in: WHO is going to take over as director of this production? And according...

SXSW Review: DRINKING BUDDIES Brings Joe Swanberg to the Big Time

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Joe Swanberg's career as a filmmaker has gone through several phases, all without his name being known to more than a tiny fraction of the movie-going public. The inadvertent and unwilling godfather of the "Mumblecore" sub-genre (in which listless twentysomethings ruminate on their mundane lives in snarky, semi-improvised dialogue), Swanberg was a perfect fit for the Austin-based SXSW Film Festival, where his first four movies premiered, one after another, four years in a row (2005-2008). But Swanberg's prolificness -- he made six films in 2011 alone -- worked against him, especially since they tended to be short, cheap-looking, and derivative projects. The indie community, weary of what seemed to be a quantity-over-quality mentality, turned against him. This culminated in an event at last year's Fantastic...

Alex Garland Mines Artificial Intelligence For His Sci-Fi Directorial Debut EX-MACHINA

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Alex Garland, screenwriter of 28 Days Later, Dredd and Never Let Me Go will be stepping into the directors chair for the first time for a sci-fi film based on his own script called Ex-Machina. The intriguing plot "centers on a billionaire programmer who handpicks a young employee to spend a week at his remote estate and participate in a test involving his latest invention: an artificially intelligent female robot." Apparently the film is scheduled to shoot in Summer of Fall, so hopefully it will be completed before artificially intelligent female robots are actually invented. On that front though, it looks like Garland probably has some time. The latest major news in artificial intelligence came with Obama's annoucement that he's planning a decade-long scientific study to...
