Things kick off May 2 at the DGA with Evan Jackson Leong's Sundance docu Linsanity. Centerpiece presentations include Tadashi Nakamura's Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings and Arvin Chen's latest romcom Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?. Japanese comedy Key of Life by Kenji Uchida will close things out on May 12. "The LAAPFF has become one of the main stops on the festival circuit for these major award winning festival films," states Abraham Ferrer, LAAPFF Senior Programmer. Posted: 01 Apr 2013 02:00 PM PDT Full marks to the cast and crew of new scifi thriller series Orphan Black - a co-production of BBC America and Canada's Space network - for striking a neat balance between smarts, style and raw, pulpy entertainment value. Science fiction fans are a demanding lot, but also intensely loyal when someone gets it right, and should the show live up to its hugely entertaining debut Orphan Black has the potential to not only find a loyal and vocal fan base among the Fringe and Lost crowd but also to branch out significantly beyond that.Tatiana Maslany stars as Sarah, a low level street hustler returning home after a ten month absence with a kilo of cocaine and a hankering to start a new life with the... |
THE FOURTH SEASON Feels No Fear Posted: 01 Apr 2013 12:00 PM PDT One of the interesting parts of running Twitch is the sheer volume of talented people it puts me in touch with. And I don't just mean in terms of coming into contact with already established filmmakers, but seeing long time contributors to the site make the step into filmmaking themselves with increasingly positive results. And the latest such example is from Ferran Brooks - a frequent contributor of coverage from the Sitges festival in Spain - who has just released a trailer to his directorial effort The Fourth Season.Carol is a reporter who suffers a strange disease which leaves her with no fear of anything. She works making reports in places where it is rumored that there is paranormal activity with the intention of dismantle... |
Review: Lack of Focus Hinders AN ETHICS LESSON Posted: 01 Apr 2013 11:00 AM PDT Ensemble casts and high concept scripts seems to be all the rage these days in Korean cinema and An Ethics Lesson, billed as an erotic thriller, is the latest addition to this trend. But as wonderful as Korea's multi-genre concoctions have been in the past, these days, in an effort to push the enveloped ever further, there has arisen a disturbing trend of films which, through the application of an all but the kitchen sink approach, have become whitewashed and bland. The 'high-concept' film is ubiquitous in Korean cinema and trailblazers that were not afraid of transgressing genre boundaries provided global film viewers with some of the world's most essential and refreshing films of the past 15 years. The nation's sterling cinematic reputation owes a... |
Review: TRANCE Juggles All The Elements, Drops The Ball Posted: 01 Apr 2013 10:00 AM PDT Trance is the latest genre-riffic attempt from wunderkind Danny Boyle, the director that came into mainstream acclaim from Slumdog Millionaire but was making great films well before. Stuck in a 90's state of mind, Trance follows Londoners connected in a twisted thread of crime, deception and sex. An insider heist of a painting at an auction goes purposely wrong and recent amnesiac Simon (James McAvoy) is left holding the 'bag' as furious uber-criminal and club owner Franck (Vincent Cassel) coerces the poor lad into seeing a shrink (Rosario Dawson as Elizabeth) in an attempt to unlock his memory and thus they key to where the damn painting is. This is merely the icing on the brain cake, however, as each character knows far more than... |
Check Out A Bloody New Still From THE RAID 2: BERANDAL Posted: 01 Apr 2013 09:30 AM PDT Production on Gareth Huw Evans' sequel to The Raid is roughly at the half way mark now and with things humming along nicely director Evans posted a super bloody image from the shoot to his Twitter account earlier today. The shot comes from a shootout sequence from the film in which things clearly go rather badly for many.Picking up directly from where the story of the first film left off, expect to see more from the Iko Uwais starring film over the coming weeks.... |
Johnny Nguyen's CHO LON Blocked By Vietnamese Censors Posted: 01 Apr 2013 09:00 AM PDT Been looking forward to seeing star Johnny Nguyen and the creative team behind The Rebel kick some more ass? You're going to have to keep waiting. It was announced today that the film has not been able to pass Vietnamese censorship and the release date is now on indefinite hold.Producers have reportedly submitted multiple versions of the film to local censors in an attempt to pass local requirements and meet their April release date but all have been denied. And given that local clearance is required before Vietnamese producers are permitted to release a film internationally - breaking this rule can result in producers being blacklisted from the local industry - this means it won't be seen anywhere else, either. What happens next? Perhaps more significant... |
Twitchvision: Talking G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, THE HOST, and Easter/Passover Movies Posted: 01 Apr 2013 08:30 AM PDT While I had to skip a press screening of the latest in the G.I. Joe franchise because of this week's "Seder" thing, I ended up paying good money to see The Rock fight some bumblebees (really, it was kind of hard to pay attention to what was going on after a while). While I enjoyed it, especially the protracted Ninjas-on-a-mountain bit, the same could not be said for The Host (which I kind of disliked, as can be seen here). Plus, brief shout-outs about picking fun Passoveaster™ films to watch during this Equinox-ish time period, including Martin Scorsese's stunning Last Temptation of Christ, Charlton Heston in The Ten Commandments, and, of course, the sheer magnificence that is Jesus Christ Superstar.... |
Stellar First Trailer For Erik Matti's Hitman Thriller ON THE JOB Posted: 01 Apr 2013 08:07 AM PDT Twitch has a long history with Filipino director Erik Matti and his hitman thriller On The Job. Based on an actual scandal in which it came out that government officials, prison wardens and gangsters were collaborating to release prisoners on day pass to work as hitmen - the story hit the news when a politician up for re-election hired one of the prison killers to execute his rival in the election - Twitch first came across and ran a proof of concept Matti shot for the project all the way back in January of 2010.That early reel was - and still is, you can see it here - an absolutely phenomenal piece of work, one that promised to launch Matti to a degree of interntional... |
Posted: 01 Apr 2013 07:45 AM PDT I'm absolutely loving the poster campaign for German-Australian sci-fi thriller Errors of the Human Body. The North American and Australian key art so far has been stylish, classy, minimalistic but always evocative and haunting. This latest poster continues the classy, haunting approach. Directed by Eron Sheean, Errors of the Human Body opens in the US through IFC Midnight in limited theatrical release and VOD on April 19.As always, go to the gallery below for a bigger massive version of the poster.Full disclosure: I work as a consultant for XYZ Films, which executive produced Errors. I have no direct relation to the film; I'm just genuinely excited.... |
Posted: 01 Apr 2013 07:20 AM PDT Game of Thrones makes it's long awaited return in better-than-fine fashion with its third season premiere masterfully directed by HBO A-lister Daniel Minahan (his credits include key episodes of Six Feet Under, Deadwood, True Blood and more) that picks up directly where series two left off and deftly reintroduces key storylines while capturing the shifted dynamics brought on by the season closing events and hinting at future conflict. And, oh yes, there will be conflict. Lots of it, some coming from rather surprising directions. The episode starts with something splashy but ultimately fairly minor to how the show plays out, so let's start with the secondary bits brought up this time, shall we? First up is Sam running through the snow in a mad panic after... |
