PAINLESS's Juan Carlos Medina to Direct DAN LENO AND THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM

Posted: 22 May 2013 04:15 AM PDT

Fresh off a successful festival circuit run of his historical thriller Painless, director Juan Carlos Medina's next project will be an adaptation of the Peter Ackroyd novel, Dan Leno & the Limehouse Golem. Announced at the Cannes film festival today, the script is written by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class), and will be produced by Stephen Woolley (The Crying Game, Byzantium). I read the book, a crime thriller set in the the dance halls and libraries of Victorian London, last year, and it is wonderfully dark and delicious. Ackroyd's work is full of great detail of the rich atmosphere of the era. Certainly, Victorian London has been seen a lot on film, but I think a fresh perspective, especially from a non-UK director, is...

Fate of Earth Lies in the MAN OF STEEL's Hands in New Trailer

Posted: 22 May 2013 03:45 AM PDT

Following a great trailer a few weeks ago, Warner Bros. have upped the ante again with another impressive look at their summer tentpole Man of Steel with a new trailer called 'Fate of Your Planet.' Less about Superman than General Zod, this new look shows us how big a threat the Man of Steel will go up against in this latest reboot.Besides the formidable villain, played by celebrated indie thesp Michael Shannon, we also get a better look at the scale of the film's effects and the design of Zod's army. Last trailer already had me sold and this is doing nothing to dissuade me. ...

Cannes 2013 First Impression: ONLY GOD FORGIVES Is A Hyper-Violent Feast For The Senses

Posted: 22 May 2013 02:24 AM PDT

Few films are as anticipated around Twitch as Nicolas Winding Refn's follow-up to Drive and re-teaming with Ryan Gosling, Only God Forgives. The film has had its premier at Cannes and boy is it going to be divisive. More art film than drama, this is an immaculately constructed production where every shot is a masterpiece. Just try to look away. From Cliff Martinez's score that alternates between full orchestral and electronic piano to some of the most exquisite production design and cinematography ever put to film, this is a cinematic feast for the senses. Even the special effects makeup work is brilliant with every sliced off body part squirting out just the right amount of practical blood. Oh and there is plenty of blood....

Watch the Trailer For Stephen Gaghan's CALL OF DUTY: GHOSTS

Posted: 21 May 2013 01:01 PM PDT

Yep, you read that right. The Academy Award winning writer of Traffic and director of Syriana Stephen Gaghan has lent his pen to the phenomenally successful Call of Duty game franchise, writing the story (and presumably the screenplay) for the next installment in the series, Call of Duty: Ghosts. Apparently Gaghan didn't just drop off a script but worked from an office at developer Infinity Ward throughout the game's production. As a fan of the series and as a massive fan of Syriana which was my favourite film of 2005, this is fantastic news. While playing Black Ops with Sam Worthington's voice was oddly jarring, I think this will be a much more seamless fit while adding more depth to the gameplay experience. Watch the trailer...

Posted: 21 May 2013 11:00 AM PDT

There will be more food, there will be more bickering, but will there be more Michael Caine?Following the runaway success of The Trip - the Michael Winterbottom directed BBC comedy starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as somewhat fictionalized versions of themselves on a food tour of northern England - word has been circulating for a while about a follow up in which the duo pack up and do it all again in Italy. Yes, it's happening and more to the point it is scheduled to begin principal photography a mere three days from now.Coogan, Brydon and Winterbottom all return in their respective roles, with The Trip To Italy once again existing as both a six part BBC comedy series and a shorter feature film....

Hollywood Beat: Notes On Cutting The Cord And NBC's Genre Programs

Posted: 21 May 2013 09:30 AM PDT

I cut the cable cord last year, but I'm not always happy about it. I had to wait a year before seeing Season 2 of Game of Thrones, for example, and will have to wait to see Season 3 until next year. I only have to wait to see Mad Men or Breaking Bad until the day after the episodes air, but then I have to buy the individual episodes via a Video On Demand service. Other than my own impatience, though, and frequent irritation with social media over spoilers, I'm very happy to remain within my limited budget and not feel completely deprived of the television experience. Even with poor over-the-air broadcast reception, I can keep up with a decent number of programs, either...

Johnnie To Talks ELECTION 3, Retirement and Five Films He Has Put The Most Effort Into Making

Posted: 21 May 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Master director Johnnie To, the man behind such classics as Election, Running Out Of Time, A Hero Never Dies and Throw Down, has been in Cannes promoting his latest film, Blind Detective. Three pieces of news have come out of his recent media interviews, and each has resulted in a different reaction in me. One has me excited, another surprised and the third leaves me a little sad. Here are the news:1. To is planning to film Election 3 in 2015, which will mark the 10th anniversary of the release of the original Election. This is exciting news because Election and its sequel are both great films. And I am hoping that all of the survivors of the two triad elections in Election and Election 2...

Donnie Yen Cometh In ICEMAN 3D. Watch The Trailer Now!

Posted: 21 May 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Donnie Yen is all thawed out and ready to go in Iceman 3D, the Law Wing Cheong directed remake of the 1989 Clarence Fok directed The Iceman Cometh, with Yen playing the role of a Ming era warrior frozen on a mountaintop only to be thawed out in modern times. Action ensues.Production has been quite difficult on this one with principal photography running well behind schedule and the budget ballooning to double the original amount but the first trailer has arrived and the footage they've got on camera is certainly attractive enough, although fans will note the extensive use of the tight shots and rapid edits that often denote the heavy presence of body doubles. Take a look at the trailer below....

IFFR 2013 Review: ME TOO Is Balabanov's Final Wave To Us All

Posted: 21 May 2013 08:00 AM PDT

(Instant happiness or instant death, the end is the end...) Russian director - and enfant terrible - Alexey Balabanov wasn't exactly a stranger at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Nearly all of his films were screened at this festival upon release, often with the director present. This year was no exception: Balabanov was in town and so was his newest film, Ya Tozhe Khochu, known in the West as Me Too. As long as Twitch has been covering the IFFR we've been trying to get an interview with Balabanov, but the man was never interested. He only did a few interviews each year anyway, and those were with local printed press. But this year Alexey Balabanov proved particularly elusive. The rumors amongst press and industry...

Now 87 years of age, Jerry Lewis returns to the big screen in Max Rose, which is set to have its world premiere at Cannes on Thursday, May 23. Written and directed by Daniel Noah, the drama also stars Claire Bloom, Kevin Pollak, and Kerry Bishe (seen above with Lewis). 87-year-old Max Rose (Jerry Lewis) is a jazz pianist who had put his professional ambitions aside for the sake of his marriage, his life's passion. We Have The Treasure: A FIELD IN ENGLAND, First Trailer

Posted: 21 May 2013 06:00 AM PDT

The first trailer for Ben Wheatley's A Field in England looks very much like its title indicates: A field. In England. But, clearly, something more is going on than merely a search for buried treasure. The official synopsis gives a hint: England during the English Civil War. A small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by two men: O'Neil and Cutler. O'Neil (Michael Smiley), an alchemist, forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that...

Cannes 2013 Review: Sci-Fi Horror Flick LAST DAYS ON MARS Is As Lifeless As The Planet Itself

Posted: 21 May 2013 05:00 AM PDT

After the screening of Last Days on Mars in the director's fortnight competition, many were wondering why exactly the clunky, derivative Mars-zombie movie was programmed at a high-class festival like Cannes. Fair enough, but the bigger, even more nagging question in my mind is why the movie was made at all. Clearly, director Ruari Robinson has considerable visual talent. Coming from an effects background, his shorts like BlinkyTM and Fifty Percent Grey gave him enough clout to direct a feature, and it's easy to understand why. Despite being made for probably a tenth of the budget of most Sci-Fi blockbusters, the Mars landscapes, complete with epic dust storms, and space travel are beautifully rendered. A few shots even carry an ethereal, haunting power that belong...
