Busan 2014 Review: THE TRUTH SHALL NOT SINK WITH SEWOL Invokes Tears And Outrage

Posted: 15 Oct 2014 02:00 AM PDT

The Sewol Disaster, the most significant event to rock South Korea since the IMF Crisis in 1997, gets its first big screen treatment with The Truth Shall Not Sink With Sewol, the first of what are sure to be many documentaries exploring the subject. Rather than offer an overview of the event and the many issues plaguing Korean society it uncovered, this film from Lee Sang-ho and Ahn Hae-ryong wisely examines only a small portion of the incident. Yet even the narrow avenue it walks uncovers a mountain of upsetting truths concerning the conduct of government and the press during the immediate aftermath of the sinking. On April 16th of this year, as it made its way from the Port of Incheon to Jeju Island,...

Watch Debut Short CARMELO From THE BOOK OF LIFE Director Jorge Gutierrez

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Hitting theaters from Fox this Friday, The Book of Life is one of the most anticipated films of the Fall. While this stylized animated adventure is produced by Guillermo del Toro, its director is a relative unknown. That man is Mexican creator Jorge Gutierrez, best known as the man behind the Nikelodeon series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. But before he made El Tigre, Gutierrez made a bit of a splash while at Cal Arts with his 2001 Student Emmy Award-winning short Carmelo. We've got the impressive short for you now, and the connections to this weekend's The Book of Life will be pretty obvious from the get go. Check it out below....

Crowdfund This: Aussie True Crime Thriller HOLT!

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 01:00 PM PDT

In December of 1967, at the height of the Vietnam War, Australian Prime Minister vanished without a trace. No warning. No clues. He was simply gone and has never been heard from since. What happened to Holt? That's been the subject of many conspiracy theories in the years since and is now the subject of an upcoming Australian short thriller titled simply Holt. The team behind this one is pretty spectacular, from Fringe star John Noble in the lead to Oscar winning cinematographer Russell Boyd, the production designer of Dark City and Daybreakers, the editor of The Great Gatsby ... this is quality from top to bottom and they're looking for a little help on Kickstarter to make it a reality. Check the pitch video below...

Watch Conor Holt's Acclaimed Indie SciFi Short A BETTER LIFE

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 12:30 PM PDT

Fresh off a hugely successful festival run, Twitch is proud to present the online premiere of Conor Holt's indie scifi short A Better Life. Very much the sort of scifi driven by ideas and characters more than effects and flash - i.e. it's not a space opera - the official synopsis is short and sweet: A new treatment for her comatose husband compels Diane to reexamine their relationship.A hot at the Fantasia Festival amongst others, take a look below....

Watch The Trailer For Espinoza's SANTIAGO VIOLENTA

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 12:05 PM PDT

[Now with English subtitles.] It's been a busy time for Chilean writer-director Ernesto Diaz Espinoza. Just last month Espinoza had the world premiere of Redeemer - his latest collaboration with martial artist Marko Zaror - at Fantastic Fest while just weeks later his latest non-Zaror film, Santiago Violenta, also had its world premiere as part of the Valdivia Festival, where it took the audience award as the best Chilean film.A comedy infused throwback to the Italian cop films of the 1970s, revolving around a group of movie obsessed friends forced to take an all too real detour into a life of crime, this promises to be stylish fun. Check out the teaser below....

Warsaw 2014 Review: GENTLE, A Polished And Splendidly Acted Adaptation Of Dostoyevsky's Touching Short Story

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Le-Van Kiet's Gentle starts with an unexpectedly drastic scene, as if trying to wash away the tranquility so pleasantly accentuated by the film's opening credits and its intriguing title, inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 1876 short story 'A Gentle Creature'.From the viewpoint of someone who has never read the aforementioned piece it seems all the more fascinating to observe how the profound, often distressing story of emotional disconnect in a marriage without any real future prospects unravels on the big screen.Dostoyevsky's short has been adapted into feature films a few times before (most notably by Robert Bresson in 1969, under the French title Une femme douce), and it's actually not the first time that a director from a country that's still undergoing massive changes, both cultural...

Sono's WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL Lands A New US Trailer

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 11:30 AM PDT

With its arrival on North American shores imminent a new trailer for Sono Sion's gonzo Why Don't You Play In Hell has arrived online. I literally ate my shirt at Fantastic Fest last year because of this film (and R100, it was a team effort) and the general level of insanity it inspires. Here's how the Toronto International Film Festival pitched it back in the day:A renegade film crew known as "The Fuck Bombers"! Yakuza gangsters hell-bent on revenge! Decapitated heads! A French kiss from a mouth full of broken glass! And a catchy toothpaste commercial jingle ... ?! Cult film director Sion Sono, known for his outlandish work including Suicide Club, Love Exposure and Cold Fish, is back with Why Don't You Play in...

Valdivia 2014 Review: SANTIAGO VIOLENTA, A Pleasant Surprise And A New Era For Díaz Espinoza

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Though there are still three months left in the year and To Kill a Man has already been chosen for the Oscars as the Chilean representative (and rightfully so) I might say that the latest film by action-oriented director Ernesto Díaz Espinoza is the best Chilean film of 2014.This is a different sort of film from the Fantastic Film Festival favorite director, who doesn't play it entirely straight and serious like in his recent Redeemer - also shown at this year's Valdivia Film Festival, but Out of Competition - but filmed in a much more clean way, without the obvious references to genre and exploitation cinema that have driven much of his earlier work. Though still somewhat a love letter to the crime pictures made...

Even By Miike Standards, This Is Just Weird. Check The Full Trailer For AS THE GODS WILL

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 10:30 AM PDT

The are exploding heads o'plenty in the full trailer for Miike Takashi's adaptation of popular manga As The Gods Will. Heads exploding into piles of beads, apparently, all of it presided over by a mocking sculpture. Then there's the guy in the mouse suit being eaten by the lucky cat. And assorted other oddities throughout. Yup. Miike's been getting back to his bloody roots recently but this time out he's clearly getting weird, too. More Zebraman weird than Gozu weird but, hey ... it's been a while since we've had weird Miike and it's nice to have him back. Check the full trailer below....

Toronto After Dark 2014: We Pick Nine Must-See Flicks

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 10:00 AM PDT

As the ninth edition of the Toronto After Dark Film Festival approaches, I conferred with two other Twitch Film men-about-Toronto, Kurt Halfyard and Jason Gorber, and we came up with our top nine must-see films of this year's festival, which kicks off on Thursday, October 16. It proved to be a challenge because the lineup has so many good entries this year; every title is worth checking out. With the exception of Hellmouth, which will have its World Premiere, and Why Horror?, which will have its Canadian Premiere during After Dark, some of these we have seen ourselves. Others were caught at other festivals on the circuit by other Twitch writers. And we deem that all are worth your time this year.We will see you After...

Pink Eiga Brings Back DVD Releases With PRISON GIRL And MILK THE MAID

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 09:01 AM PDT

After three years of distributing Pinku titles solely on VOD, Pink Eiga is bringing back the DVD! What may seem to be a silly venture to take up again is, in reality, a response to their fans and the numerous requests that followed their VOD releases. "When will it be out on DVD?" It gives weight to the term 'Tactile Pleasure.' I guess a lot of folks like to hold something in their hands when they watch these movies. The DVD case! What did you think I meant? Weirdos. As the announcement goes, Pink Eiga went to their production partners in Japan and asked for new movies that they had not seen yet. Out of the 46 titles they were sent, they have chosen 14 to release...

Duras, along with Alain Robbe-Grillet, was part of the Left Bank film movement and hugely influential for coming of  French New Wave.Putting a big emphasis on mood and dialogue, Duras' elliptical stories have long been well regarded and respected by the film giants like Resnais and Godard. Latin Beat: Grotesco, New Mexican Horror Exhibition; Chile's PARTIR TO LIVE; Hollywood In Argentina

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Producer Guillermo del Toro brings Mexican "Day of the Dead" culture to movie screens in the animated adventure The Book of Life, which opens wide across much of Latin America on Thursday (and North America on Friday). I'm a bit concerned that Channing Tatum (?!) is voicing a character named Javier with a thick accent -- but I'll keep an open mind until I see it. But that's not all. Eric Ortiz Garcia, our correspondent in Mexico, tells us about a new horror exhibition. Jaime Grijalba Gomez, our correspondent in Chile, reports on upcoming releases, including one that may be Oscar-worthy and another that is (probably) not. And from my apartment in Dallas, Texas, in between checking for news on the Ebola virus (closer and closer...

FROM PARTS UNKNOWN: FIGHT LIKE A GIRL: Watch The Trailer For Australian Zombie-Wrestling-Video Game Movie

Posted: 14 Oct 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Aussie production company Strongman Pictures Entertainment is proudly gearing up for the imminent release of a movie that has been almost a decade in the making: Daniel Armstrong's From Parts Unknown: Fight Like a Girl. The story behind this wrestling/zombie mashup began way back in 2006, when the film started a 42-day shoot that ended up spanning over six months. A true guerrilla effort, FPU was filmed with no director of photography, no editor, no sound designer, and no access to post-production facilities, all on a budget of less than $5,000. These and other difficulties led to an interminable seven years of post-production, and once the resources ran out, the film had to be shelved indefinitely.Shortly after this, Armstrong scored a cult hit with MurderDrome, the...
