Watch Matthew Chuang's Brilliant Fantasia Award-Winning Short MATHILDA

Posted: 28 May 2013 08:30 PM PDT

At last year's Fantasia International Film Festival one of the short films to make a big impression was Matthew Chuang's Mathilda, which took out the Silver Audience Award. Twitch is now proud to present the short which just launched online.Featuring a standout performence by young actress Virginia Cashmere, Mathilda is pitched as a modern fairytale. Mathilda is a ten-year-old girl who lives with a terrifying monster. Determined to save herself and her sister, Mathilda forms a desperate plan inspired by her imagination, setting off a chain of events not even she could anticipate.Director Matthew Chuang - who also works as a DOP - first came to my attention with his feature debut Braille back in 2009, and again just recently with this awesome commercial.Based on Mathilda I'm hoping it's not...

Hey, NYC! Win Tix To The Aussie Thriller WISH YOU WERE HERE, Starring Joel Edgerton

Posted: 28 May 2013 03:31 PM PDT

Australia has been mighty kind over the last couple of years to audiences who enjoy a good character-based thriller. Films that Twitch has taken a liking to which fall under this category include The Square, Snowtown, and, of course, the much lauded Animal Kingdom. While never getting a full review here on the site, James Marsh and Ryland Aldrich did have good things to say about Kieran Darcy-Smith's Asian-vacation-gone-wrong Wish You Were Here during its festival run, making particular note of the performances by Joel Edgerton, Felicity Price, and Teresa Palmer. As more than luck would have it, we've got ten double passes to give away to a June 4th screening of the movie in New York City. If you'd like a chance to win...

Sanjay Dutt Takes A Bite Out Of Crime In First POLICEGIRI Trailer

Posted: 28 May 2013 02:30 PM PDT

The South's gonna rise again! This time, it's the south of India, whose over the top masala action style is all the rage in Bollywood these days. The latest product of this trend is Policegiri, a film starring '80s-'90s superstar romantic lead Sanjay Dutt as a roughneck cop taking matters into his own hands, sort of like a Dirty Hari. Not surprisingly, the film is a remake of a Tamil film titled Saamy that starred Vikram and was a huge hit at the box office. The remake is directed by big shot Tamil filmmaker KS Ravikumar, who is responsible for one huge hit after another, including Kamal Hassan's bizarre vanity project Dasavataram from back in 2008. More recently, Ravikumar is currently involved in co-directing the massive...

Cannes 2013 Review: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS - Colorful Characters, Folk Music, And Saving Cats

Posted: 28 May 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Winners of numerous screenwriting awards including two Oscars, it's difficult to think of many filmmakers more adept at their craft than Joel and Ethan Coen. So it comes as a bit of a surprise when, in the first act of the brothers' latest film, Inside Llewyn Davis, Oscar Isaac's titular Llewyn pulls out a trick straight from Screenwriting 101 and literally saves the cat. As Blake Snyder will tell you, this technique is used to build quick sympathy for the protagonist -- in this case, making us like Oscar. It works -- and that is thankfully just about the only by-the-book beat in this nontraditional but wholly enjoyable film. Set in New York City's Greenwich Village during the 1960s, Inside Llewyn Davis is a...

Calling All Germany-Based Japanophiles! Nippon Connection Returns!

Posted: 28 May 2013 11:00 AM PDT

For East-Central Europe it's a rather rare occasion to be able to host a film festival that focuses only on Japanese pictures. There are merely a few chances in a year to watch movies made in this particular country, and often it's a case of them playing for a day or two in one of the indie theaters in big cities like Warsaw or Prague. And sometimes it's even worse than that - many productions from Japan (and East Asia in general) get lost somewhere along the way and rarely get an opportunity to have their premieres in this part of the world. That's why it's even more exciting to experience Nippon Connection Film Festival, which so passionately pays homage to the cinema of...

Andrzej Zulawski's POSSESSION Slithers Onto Blu-ray July 29th From Second Sight UK

Posted: 28 May 2013 11:00 AM PDT

There are few films quite as harrowing and pulsatingly unpleasant as Andrzej Zulawski's nightmarish Possession. A marriage on the rocks is never a pretty thing to witness, but when you add madness, monsters, and mania into the mix, it becomes downright scary.Relative newcomer to the genre block Second Sight Films in the UK is the first company to get their paws on Possession for Blu-ray and I couldn't be more excited after having experienced their fantastic releases so far. Their Blu-ray discs of The Return of the Living Dead, Basket Case, and From Beyond have all earned my highest marks, and having seen some stills of the restoration of Possession, I think we're all in for a real treat. They are also adding some really...

Watch The Amazing Official Trailer For Yuasa Masaaki's KICK-HEART!

Posted: 28 May 2013 10:30 AM PDT

Animator Yuasa Masaaki is an enormous favorite here at Twitch, the helmer of Mind Game turning out consistently quality material always marked by his playful intelligence. Yuasa is quite simply one of the best things going in the animation world, a creator whose general oddness has generated a hugely loyal cadre of fans while also preventing a major mainstream crossover audience so far. And so he turned to Kickstarter for his latest project - a short film titled Kick-Heart - and it is a project I was personally more than happy to support.Kick-Heart is a love story between Romeo, a successful pro wrestler, and Juliet, a nun who lives a secret double-life as a female pro wrestler. Romeo's secret is that he enjoys taking a...

Twitch Wants You!

Posted: 28 May 2013 10:00 AM PDT

As an English speaking site which strives to cover the best and most unusual films from around the globe, Twitch runs into a very predictable problem on a very regular basis: How do you find information on films in countries where English is not widely spoken? We've developed our own tricks and systems to do so over the years but, ultimately, a great deal of our ability to do so comes down to contributions from you, the Twitch community. And so, as we do from time to time, we're throwing out a call for new contributors. Let me be clear first what we're not looking for here. We already have a good number of voices covering the US release schedule - both studio and indie -...

One Man Unites A Nation In The First Teaser For WALESA

Posted: 28 May 2013 09:00 AM PDT

When looking at the turbulent post-World War II history of Eastern Europe, it's crucial to comprehend the importance of a few local heroes, who had an immense impact on the revolutions and the whole transformation process that the citizens of the nations of the so-called Eastern Bloc (such as Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary), led by Soviet Union, longed for since the day Communists took over and started their unlawful ruling. One of the most meaningful events of those times happened in the center of the Polish voivodeship called Pomerania. What began as labor strikes in the Gdansk Shipyard soon turned into a fight for the independence of a struggling country. In all the turmoil caused by ongoing conflicts between the ruling Communist party and the...

Melbourne International Film Festival 2013 Reveals Its First Glance

Posted: 28 May 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Melbourne International Film Festival has unveiled its First Glance, a snapshot of the documentary, narrative fiction, shorts and the Next-Gen program that will be playing at the 2013 festival.Of course it's not a full line-up and there are a lot of 'best of' Sydney Film Fest titles (which is exciting as we Melbournians do not miss out), but there is still a hint at the wide spread of American festival titles that Sydney did not pick up, as well as a plethora of Australian titles exclusive to the festival.Immediately it is clear that these titles are 'earlier' festival picks, and we anticipate a separate announcement of the Cannes acquisitions to come. Unsurprisingly these are great titles that continue to showcase MIFF's ability to create a program...
