Will Schwarzenegger Prove Non-Toxic In THE TOXIC AVENGER Remake?

Posted: 14 May 2013 02:31 AM PDT

Yes, you read that right. A remake of Troma's 1984 cult hit The Toxic Avenger is in the works, and according to Variety, Arnold Schwarzenegger is in talks to star. For those thinking Arnie would be either atrocious (or perfect) as Toxie - the wimpy teenager transformed into a monstrous hulk by toxic waste - here is some consolation (or disappointment): he is being eyed for another role entirely. This might prove a wise choice, seeing as how he has recently been more successful in supporting than starring roles. Director of this reboot will be Steve Pink of Hot Tub Time Machine fame, and the aim is to make this new Toxic Avenger a mainstream action adventure. Intriguing to say the least. And some interesting...

Blu-ray Review: TOKYO MAGNITUDE 8.0 Is Tragedy Animated

Posted: 13 May 2013 08:00 PM PDT

Japan's psyche was deeply affected after the Fukushima catastrophe and the effects of this have been increasingly felt in a lot of post-trauma works of fiction since. However there's one work of fiction that aired only 18 months before the disaster and which was very prescient, and this is the brilliant anime series Tokyo Magnitude 8.0.Imagine if an earthquake as powerful as magnitude 8.0 struck Tokyo today; who would we think about and what would we do at that moment? Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is a tremendous human drama that portrays the connections and human bonds in extreme events as it follows protagonist Mirai, her eight year old brother and stranger Mari as they navigate the devastated Tokyo in an attempt to find Mirai's parents, from whom...

Sydney 2013 Preview: Opening and Closing Films Plus Official Competition Picks

Posted: 13 May 2013 07:00 PM PDT

As the 60th Sydney Film Festival approaches, feelings of excitement and eager anticipation are shared by all of the city's film lovers. Why? Well, the recently unveiled festival program features a truly spectacular line-up, and there is really something for everyone to enjoy here. The Opening Night Film is Mystery Road, written, directed, edited and scored by talented Aussie filmmaker Ivan Sen. The trailer has not yet been released, but the description of the film certainly sounds intriguing: "a suspenseful and intelligent mystery that uses the conventions of the Western and the police procedural in a subtle examination of the social and political context of a small town in the Australian Outback." Sen's last feature, Toomelah, was in SFF Official Competition in 2011.The Closing Night Film is Morgan...

DVD Review: HAIL Experiments, Causes Headaches

Posted: 13 May 2013 06:00 PM PDT

Hail is not a pleasant film - it is in fact alienating and dismisses the concept of an audience as the film is clearly not made for them. It immerses you into a mire of ugly imagery aided by scattershot and headache-inducing cinematography. An ex-con by the name of Dan (Daniel Jones) is reunited with the love of his life, Leanne (Leanne Campbell). It is quickly evident the film is based on the experiences of these not-really-actors and it feels real which is not a detriment to the film, however it did impact my enjoyment of it and I was unable to find it accessible in any way. Dan wants to go straight; he gets a simple job, screws that up and is lured back into the...

Indie Beat: What We Talk About When We Talk About Independent Cinema

Posted: 13 May 2013 05:00 PM PDT

(Zoe Kazan recovers from a stressful moment in Bradley Rust Gray's 2009 film "The Exploding Girl")My mindset in talking and writing about film has always stemmed from an inner dialog which goes something like this: "Well if I were out there making movies, I'd surely want someone who can write about my movies with an intelligent, considerate, and rather democratic voice. Someone who would want to start a dialog not start a fight. Someone who just doesn't only want to critique, but really dig down deep and live in the very fiber and marrow of a film. Even if it hurts them. Even if they hate the film I'd want there to be empathy in play." So as corny as that may sound, that's where I...

Watch The Astounding International Trailer For Ari Folman's THE CONGRESS

Posted: 13 May 2013 04:15 PM PDT

How do you follow a ground breaking film like Waltz With Bashir? If you're Ari Folman you break more ground with the next one, the next one in this case being a loose adaptation of Stanislaw Lem's The Futurological Congress that plays even looser with notions of reality, fame, and Robin Wright.Robin Wright (Robin Wright) receives an offer from Miramount to be scanned. In this way, her alias can be freely exploited in all films the Hollywood major decides to produce, even the most downmarket ones, the ones she has turned down until now. For 20 years she disappears to return as guest of honor at the Miramount-Nagasaki Convention in a transformed world of fantastical appearances.Soon to open the Director's Fortnight section in Cannes the...

Massive Destruction In First Trailer For Bondarchuk's STALINGRAD

Posted: 13 May 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Oh. My.Russia's Fedor Bondarchuk should need no introduction in these pages, the man being active as an actor, producer and director on numerous projects covered heavily on Twitch over the years. But for those who need refreshing, on the directing front Bondarchuk first came to our attention with his stellar war picture The 9th Company - a remarkable account of the Russian occupation of Afghanistan as told by a technical virtuoso who also had a remarkable gift for character - before moving on to big budget scifi spectacle Inhabited Island. Well, Bondarchuk is back and he's returning to war ... but this time the time period is somewhat different. Made for a reported $30 million - a monstrous budget by Russian standards, where the dollar...

Kitamura Ryuhei Talks NO ONE LIVES, VERSUS 2 And Sakaguchi's 'Bullshit' Retirement

Posted: 13 May 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Japanese director Kitamura Ryuhei has been a favorite here at Twitch since the day he first broke on to the international scene with 2000 effort Versus. And with his latest English language effort - No One Lives - about to release in North America we had the chance to ask the director about his latest effort, bridging Hollywood and Japan, and the prospects of the long awaited Versus 2.The Lady Miz Diva:  What brought you to this project? Ryuhei Kitamura:  It was back in 2010, I think, the producer found me and he sent me the script - that's what happens when you're in Hollywood, right - they send you a script all the time - every week. Unfortunately, most of the scripts suck.  So, especially...

TV DRACULA Trailer Aims For Atmosphere, Romance, And A Little Blood

Posted: 13 May 2013 01:30 PM PDT

With the fate of Hannibal still up in the air -- or, at least, not yet revealed -- U.S. broadcast network NBC announced its fall schedule, which includes a new version of Dracula from the producers of Downton Abbey (?!), and starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors). The series is set to air on Friday nights, following Grimm, an amusing and energetic genre show that has done quite well in its second season. From the trailer that NBC has released for Dracula, it looks like a good match for those who still watch TV shows on the night they're first broadcast. Though the Downton Abbey pedigree sounds odd, it makes sense, considering the Victoria Era setting, the costumes, production design, and so forth, which all...

Indulging A Sweet Tooth Has Tragically Hilarious Results In Dutch Short SUGAR. Watch It Now!

Posted: 13 May 2013 01:00 PM PDT

It was at Fantastic Fest 2012 that I first had the chance to see Jeroen Annokkee's deliciously black comedy Sugar (Suiker), a short film that takes a simple premise and pushes it to a hysterical extreme. A beautifully constructed bit of work this may very well be the best way you spend seven minutes today. Bert's scantily dressed downstairs neighbour, Klaasje, comes by to borrow a cup of sugar, a standard situation with a possibly sexual outcome. When she lets the cup slip from her hands and they both try to catch it, destiny strikes.Twitch is very happy to present the complete short to you here, now. But we're only allowed to keep it online for two weeks, so act fast! Check the film below!...

Review: GAME OF THRONES S3E07, THE BEAR AND THE MAIDEN FAIR (Or, Stumpy Grows A Conscience And Does Something Entertainingly Stupid)

Posted: 13 May 2013 12:30 PM PDT

A note to whoever wrote Sansa's dialogue in this week's episode of Game Of Thrones: Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Listening to Sansa describe herself as a stupid little girl - arguably the biggest moment of insight she has had throughout the duration of the series - was a lovely little payoff to all the time spent watching her behave like a stupid little girl. A hearty "YES," may have been shouted at the screen at that point. "YES YOU ARE!"And as much as that particular moment was more or less a throw-away it does provide a handy entry point into the sexual politics - particularly the politics around breeding, by which I mean making children and not learning your manners -...

Cannes 2013 Preview: Critics' Week and Directors' Fortnight Sidebars

Posted: 13 May 2013 09:00 AM PDT

It's that wonderful time of the year again where brightest stars of the film world take to the French Riviera to unveil their latest masterpieces -- with a few duds likely thrown in as well. Yes it's almost time for the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival and Twitch European Editor Brian Clark and Festivals Editor Ryland Aldrich will be there in our tuxedos to tell the faithful Twitch audience just which films flip and which films flop. (Actually we'll probably just be wearing jeans and t-shirts at the press screenings, but what's the difference?) The festival kicks off Wednesday with the opening night out-of-competition screening of The Great Gatsby. You've already read one opinion of that, but Brian and I will be previewing quite...

Korean Box Office: IRON MAN 3 Threepeats up Top

Posted: 13 May 2013 05:30 AM PDT

Apologies for missing the last update; you can find out more about about last week's box office results over on Modern Korean Cinema.Iron Man 3 stood strong for a third week but overall business took a dive as it fell under the two million mark, with only 1.8 million tickets sold. Good weather and a lack of strong new titles were likely to blame for the slow cinema traffic. That said the Korean market share shot up significantly to 33%, still not a great result compared to the past few months but nonetheless a slight increase over last year. Title Release Date Market Share Weekend Total Screens 1 Iron Man 3 (us) 13/04/25 58.20% 1,039,872 7,442,904 1129 2 Boomerang Family 13/05/09 23.40% 442,056 516,639 583...
