Learning From The Masters Of Cinema: Douglas Sirk's THE TARNISHED ANGELS Posted: 19 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT While the name Douglas Sirk has long been a familiar one, The Tarnished Angels marks the first of his films I have actually taken the time to watch. After building his name on high profile studio melodramas, this particular film indicates a somewhat less commercial venture for the German-born director. Given free reign by Universal after the success of All That Heaven Allows and There's Always Tomorrow among others, Sirk chose to adapt William Faulkner's downbeat Depression-era novel, Pylon, and cast the three lead performers from his earlier film, Written On The Wind, in far darker, more compromised territory. Rock Hudson stars, way against type, as Burke Devlin, a dishevelled, drunken newspaperman who stumbles upon the bizarre, nomadic lives of travelling daredevil pilots. Roger Shumann... |
Korean Box Office: HIDE AND SEEK Is Lord Of The Korean Thrillers Posted: 19 Aug 2013 01:00 AM PDT August continued to be redhot at the Korean box office as no less than four Korean thrillers duked it out for the top spot. In the end it wasn't as close a race as it seemed it was going to be but, nevertheless, a stunning 3.96 million tickets were sold over the frame, light years ahead of last year's 3.12 million. The story was even more impressive for local films as the four local thrillers that held court at the top of the chart combined for a commanding 89%, compared with 68% last year. Title Release Date Market Share Weekend Total Screens 1 Hide and Seek 13/08/14 34.20% 1,353,185 2,126,186 779 2 The Flu 13/08/14 24.50% 970,229 1,854,655 806 3 Snowpiercer 13/07/31 18.00% 695,985 8,182,097... |
Hollywood Beat: Joseph Kosinski Directing TWILIGHT ZONE; Why THE BUTLER is Cleaning Up Posted: 18 Aug 2013 06:00 PM PDT Knees will jerk at the news that Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) is directing The Twilight Zone, but is there any way this could be a good thing? As a long-time fan of Rod Serling's TV series The Twilight Zone, my knee was one of those that jerked upon hearing that Joseph Kosinski is in negotiations to direct a new big-screen version, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This news comes after Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In) dropped out; Reeves signed up based on a script that followed one story, rather than the anthology approach taken for the 1982 screen version, which featured four segments, two quite good (Joe Dante, George Miller), and two quite bad (John Landis, Steven Spielberg). My friend Peter Hall suggests... |
TIFF 2013 Exclusive: Debut Trailer for Greek Thriller STANDING ASIDE, WATCHING (NSFW) Posted: 18 Aug 2013 12:10 PM PDT The Toronto International Film Fest is coming up like a speeding freight train and this year the festival's "City To City" program will focus on Athens, Greece. With a new wave of recent Greek films breaking through such as Dogtooth (review) Attenberg (reviews), now seems the perfect time to shine a spotlight on the films of the region. One of the bright lights on the Christmas tree of new voices is Yorgos Servetas whose debut feature The Way Things Are Determined premiered at Thessaloniki in 2008. Servetas's follow-up Standing Aside, Watching will have its world premiere at this year's TIFF. A modern-day Greek thriller, Twitch is lucky enough to bring you an exclusive first look at the trailer. Here's more on the film: Antigone... |

Camera Japan Festival 2013 Confirms First Titles (And Shonen Knife) Posted: 18 Aug 2013 05:35 AM PDT September marks the welcome return of the annual Camera Japan Festival in Rotterdam. For a few days there will be, and I quote their site: "A Japanese cultural festival with its main focus on film that also dives into other areas like art, music, dance, fashion, architecture, food and many more." Based on my visits in previous years, truer words have seldom been written. This festival is one of the few places where you can see anime on the big screen, check out some Japanese music, eat damn good Japanese food and buy more books than you planned. Recalling last year's Sake-tasting session brings fond (if somewhat dim) memories, and I met lots of the same people I see at IFFR there as well. In... |
