Melbourne 2013 Review: JIMMY P, A Psychoanalytical Slog

Director Arnaud Desplechin is a labelled auteur and no stranger to cognitive dissonance. His latest feature, direct from Cannes continues, his inquiry into the mind, but given the previous efforts, it is inexcusable how utterly dull Jimmy P is. The film makes no effort to elevate its intriguing subject matter of post-war trauma as experienced from the point of view of a Native American. Jimmy P makes David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method seem like a roller-coaster thrill ride by comparison. The full title is Jimmy P. Psychotherapy Of A Plains Indian and that is simply what the film is, nothing less and nothing more. The year is 1948, the place is America, and the titular Blackfoot clansman is Jimmy (Benicio Del Toro), who suffers from intense headaches...

Review: CHENNAI EXPRESS Is Rompy, Forgettable Fun

Posted: 09 Aug 2013 09:30 PM PDT

I've seen a lot of Shah Rukh Khan's films. In a career going back to the early '90s, this biggest of all Bollywood superstars has created at least a dozen iconic performances that have shaped the way that Bollywood films approach their worldwide audiences. It was his performance in Aditya Chopra's timeless Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (The Braveheart Wins The Bride) that most boldly approached the NRI (Non-resident Indian) film market and struck deep chords with the Indian diaspora back in 1995. Since then he's starred in dozens of films, many of them record-breaking blockbusters, and, on more than one occasion, had the opportunity to spoof himself and his characters' ubiquitous presence in films of his own. However, there is no more "meta" exercise in SRK's oeuvre...

Review: I GIVE IT A YEAR, Romantic Comedy Brashly Turned On Its Ear

Posted: 09 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Effortlessly emerging from an ocean of belabored romantic comedies, I Give It A Year is a breath of fresh air; it's brash, witty, and insightful. On paper, Dan Mazer's script sounds stereotypical and schematic: a couple rush into marriage, experience romantic tributions, and are tempted toward infidelity by others. In execution, however, Mazer's directorial debut is dextrous and surprising, swiftly introducing tropes and then, just as quickly, taking the piss out of them. Rose Byrne and Rafe Spall play the couple in question, named Nat and Josh, respectively. She's a marketing consultant, he's a writer. They're both fit, attractive, and in their thirties, anxious to settle down and get on with their lives. They marry after seven months of courtship, but within nine months they're...

Dark Bridges Unveils First Two Titles: BUSHIDO MAN and RESOLUTION Lead The Way!

Posted: 09 Aug 2013 07:30 AM PDT

The Dark Bridges Film Festival out in Saskatoon, SK, unveiled the first two titles of their program yesterday. The programmers, of which I am one, are working hard to bring another strong lineup to this year's festival running September 26th through 29th. Meta-horror Resolution will be making one of its final festival appearances before its release date later in October. A darling of the festival circuit since its bow at Tribeca the festival is very pleased to bring this horror gem to Roughrider Nation. And I immediately pushed for Bushido Man to be included in this years's lineup once I saw it at Fantasia the other week. One of the buzz titles from the festival, I expect we'll be seeing a lot of this film on...
