Review: AFTERNOON DELIGHT Captures the Challenges of Seeking Love, Happiness, and Peace

Poor Rachel (Kathryn Hahn). Although she's married to the man of her dreams, Jeff (Josh Radnor), leads a really nice lifestyle, and has a healthy son, she's bored as hell as a stay-at-home housewife. Her friends are starting to suck, because they all have day jobs and/or do normal mom things. And Jeff never wants to have sex. They high five in passing more often than they copulate, and Jeff even has an unspoken "no sex tonight" safe phrase when they're going to bed.In an attempt to spice up their sex life, she, along with Jeff and some of their friends, go to a strip club. Here's where it gets, well, a bit odd. After getting a lap dance from a young stripper named McKenna...

Wrapping up principal photography on August 28, the latest thriller flick of Victor Vu titled A Vengeful Heart released behind-the-scenes footage today, showing how a good thriller looks. The production design looks both haunting and beautiful, the location set is fitting the atmosphere of the story, the make-up looks real and the actors looks like they're really into their characters.A Vengeful Heart tells the story of a bridegroom who escorts his new wife to Da Lat resort after heart transplant surgery. But the new heart in her chest is cursed, causing the ghost of a strange young girl to appear, which leads the couple into a frightening nightmare.A Vengeful Heart will have a theatrical release on December 18. Macabro 2013 Review: Puerto Rican Zombies With Almost No Makeup In The Cheap BARRICADA (BARRICADE)

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Macabro 2013 offered a couple of Puerto Rican films, as part of its out-of-competition section presented by the Puerto Rico Horror Film Fest (PRHFF). Barricada (Barricade), the 2011 winner for "best local feature" at PRHFF, was the first one and I had the chance to watch it at Mexico City's Cineteca Nacional (Cinematheque). It's a well-meaning effort with no further intention than being one kick-ass zombie flick. As an ordinary low-budget venture, Barricade lacks exceptional filmmaking and, sadly, enough intelligence to cover up its amateurish look. Directors Vance McLean and José F. Vargas wanted their zombie movie to be really serious, perhaps more than it should have been. While there are some humorous moments, Barricade wants to be a dark, tense and violent piece about the...

Macabro 2013 Review: HERMANOS DE SANGRE (BLOOD BROTHERS), A Likeable Dark Comedy About Friendship

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT

The Argentinean movie Hermanos de Sangre (Blood Brothers) quickly lands in familiar territory. Once we identify the kind of film this is, there aren't many surprises left. The story is very predictable indeed, but director Daniel de la Vega focuses on the tone to create a really fun and entertaining dark comedy. And for the most part, Blood Brothers is funny, even when many of its jokes come from situations that aren't exactly something we haven't seen before. The protagonist of the film is Matías (Alejandro Parrilla), a really kind, nerdy dude who is overweight. Think of him as the sort-of Argentinean version of Nick Frost, though the resemblance is mostly just physical, as Matías is not entirely a hilarious character. From the beginning of the...

Impressive Trailer For New Zealand Drama FANTAIL

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 09:30 AM PDT

Produced under the auspices of New Zealand's low budget Escalator film support scheme, director Curtis Vowell and writer / star Sophie Henderson looked to have cooked up something quite compelling with their feature film Fantail.Tania thinks she's Maori. She works the graveyard shift at Horizon to save money to take her brother Pi to Surfers. But one night a cheeky little bird ruins everything and Tania pays the ultimate price for being a hero.A bit of a cultural identity social drama, a bit of a romance, the obviously quality cast, firm direction, and a willingness to go dark make this one worth taking a look at. Check out the trailer below....

Review: OUR NIXON Offers A Rare Glimpse Into A President's Soul

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

He definitely is ours, like it or not. Richard Nixon may no longer be seen as the staid and calculating everyman with the nation's best interests at heart he appeared to be when he crushed George McGovern in the 1972 elections, but he remains a singularly symbolic figure in the American political landscape. As a child of the 80s, I was spared the tortuous relationship with Nixon that my parents seemed to have (disgust, for the most part) and it was only through watching Our Nixon that I began to understand why he evoked such extreme reactions from both sides of the political spectrum. The man was both incredibly paranoid and very naive. He was our president. It was a big deal. It's rare to...

Teaser for Errol Morris' THE UNKNOWN KNOWN Showcases Obsession And Nuance

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 08:30 AM PDT

One of my most anticipated titles at TIFF, Errol Morris' documentary interview with Donald Rumsfeld called The Unknown Known now has a very effective teaser. A sort of follow up to Morris' Fog Of War - the Oscar winning documentary on Robert McNamara, another US Secretary of State - and appearing as slickly edited and scored as always, the trailer establishes the setting of the two Gulf Wars and Saddam Hussein's position of power, before highlighting the twin constants of Morris' filmmaking: obsession and nuance. Rumsfeld actually calls the filmmaker out on a possible obsession with capturing Rumsfeld's obsession, while also declaring, "I'm cool and measured." OK, this is going to be a subtle battle of wills, as well as some elucidation on the thinking of...

Exclusive Interview: Tony Leung, Cinematic Grandmaster

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Tony Leung is a grandmaster of the big screen. His collaborations with John  Woo, Wong Kar Wai and others have solidified not only his reputation as a master craftsman but one who is able to take that physical craft so attached to the notion of "acting" and translate it into a narrative as well technical force. A Buddhist, he radiates a sense of peace and calm that makes it hard indeed to imagine flashing a gun or fist yet upon speaking with him about his craft it's clear that a sense of spiritual place comes as natural to him as his embodiment of character, dialogue and powerhouse use of force in action scenes. A once in a lifetime opportunity to interview him yielded a memory I shall...

The 8 Best Things I Learned At The RIDDICK Press Conference With Vin Diesel, Katee Sackhoff and David Twohy

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT

In a cinema culture where "sequel" is usually synonymous with "bigger-louder-flashier," Riddick is something of an anomaly. After expanding the universe of his cult-sleeper-hit Pitch Black significantly in the studio-backed Chronicles of Riddick, writer/director David Twohy has actually scaled things back for the taut, contained third entry in the series. This one finds Vin Diesel reprising his role as the titular convict anti-hero with night vision. Stalwart fans may remember that Riddick ended up as royalty at the end of the previous films -- but it turns out that this stint was short lived. As the first five minutes reveal, Riddick has been ejected and left to rough it Jeremiah Johnson style on a planet which seems barren... except for hyena-like alien dogs and fierce cobra-tail...
