Review: THE SPY: UNDERCOVER OPERATION Should Have Stayed Under Wraps Posted: 29 Aug 2013 07:35 PM PDT Korean cinema has gotten very good at staging impressive onscreen spectacle in recent years. Though $10 million budgets used to be a rare thing, reserved for only the most ambitious and promising films, these days an abundance of these pricey projects are flooding the market. As with everywhere else in the cinema landscape, studios feel a need to continually up the ante as they worry about the diminishing attention spans of their audiences. But for every film that spends its money wisely many more appear that could easily be labeled a waste: of the production budget, as well as the audience's time. Which brings us to The Spy: Undercover Operation. Korea's top spy, Chul-soo, takes a trip to Thailand when word surfaces of a plot... |

Review: GETAWAY, Trapped In A Muscle Car In Bulgaria Posted: 29 Aug 2013 10:00 AM PDT 'You VILL smash unto dat breek vall!' 'But, but ---' 'NOW ... or you vill be VIDOWER!' [Smash! Smash! Smash!] 'Hehehehe ... guuud! ... Now .. do eet AGAIN! und AGAIN! und AGAIN! ... [Smash! Smash! Smash! Smash! Smash! Smash! Smash!] ... hehehehe ... guuuuuud.' His face is kept hidden, but his all-purpose Eastern European accent is distinctive -- and his name is third-billed in the credits -- so I believe it's safe to say that's Jon Voight providing the evil narration throughout Getaway. From an objective viewpoint, the only thing 'guuud' about Getaway is that its running time is barely 90 minutes. But that's about 88 minutes longer than I wanted to spend in close proximity to the occupants of the American muscle car... |
Review: I DECLARE WAR, Kids Battling Kids Is Both Nostalgic And Revealing Posted: 29 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT One weekend day a number of the nerdier kids from the local middle school gather their sticks and twine and balloons filled with red dye, and head into the local woods to play capture-the-flag. Oh, those tweens today with their Bieber hair-cuts and their war games. While we are never given any visual context of this one-day war, it is implied that these games have been going on for some time and someone is keeping statistics. Jason Lapeyre's odyssey of two groups of children battling in the forest -- no this ain't The Hunger Games, more like a leafy, agora-version The Stanford Prison Experiment -- is a peculiar but totally engrossing combination of make-believe and reality. At that age friendships seem like everything, and everything... |
Review: PASSION, Great Erotic Fun That Doesn't Hold A Candle To De Palma's Best Posted: 29 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT After the experimental political polemic Redacted and the gun-for-hire mess The Black Dahlia, Brian De Palma has returned to what should be his comfort zone; a violent, erotic thriller which he actually wrote himself. In fact, every scene of Passion seems to beg for a collective "return to form" proclamation. It's got identical twins, split-screen, sumptuous ballet, labyrinthine dream sequences and obsession to spare, but ultimately, it still feels like an over-the-hill rocker playing all his hits from forty years ago. On one hand, everything lacks the energy that originally made it so powerful, but, on the other hand, the songs are still better than anything else written in the last decade. That is to say, Passion is great fun, and occasionally kinda brilliant, but... |
No Elephant, Lots Of Violence In Second Teaser For Tony Jaa's TOM YUM GOONG 2 Posted: 29 Aug 2013 07:35 AM PDT What's not in the new teaser for Tony Jaa star vehicle Tom Yum Goong 2: His elephant. Which, yes, has gone missing again. What is in the trailer for Tom Yum Goong 2: A lot of punching and kicking, some high flying stunts, The RZA, Jeeja Yanin and Marrese Crump looking rather impressive. And also one heavily CGI assisted stunt that will leave the old school purists tearing out their hair. That final shot aside, this latest trailer looks far more impressive than the first effort which already wasn't half bad. Take a look below.... |
Review: ABIGAIL HARM, A Modern-Day Fairy Tale Done Right Posted: 29 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT I've always liked Amanda Plummer. Her small, gravelly voice, her fawn-like demeanor, and her hidden ferocity have always gotten my attention in the many films in which I've seen her. It's that fragile, otherworldly quality of the seasoned actress that director Lee Isaac Chung (Munyurangabo) taps into and uses to maximum effect in his new feature film, Abigail Harm. This modern day fairy tale is apparently loosely based on a Korean folklore, Woodcutter and the Nymph, which goes something like this: Once there was a poor man who barely eked out a living off of cutting down and selling trees deep in the countryside. One day, he encountered a wounded deer in the forest. The animal pleaded with him to hide him from the hunters. This... |
